Seriously, Alice?

When I get a quick minute to work on a project, I first grab what's on the couch and work on it.  If there is nothing on the couch, I think, "Let's start something new!"  Of course, there may not be a project on the couch because I cleaned up and put it in my WIP (work in progress) drawer or the project is in my craft bag or one of a million other reasons.  It's most definitely *not* because I'm fresh out of WIPs.

Most of the time I willingly submit to the siren call of starting a new project because the lure of a new project is like smelling cookies cooling in the kitchen.  How do you resist walking into the kitchen and eating an ooey gooey freshly baked cookie hot from the baking sheet?

The point being that if I want to finish projects, I need to keep them in my face either literally or figuratively.  Since I can't rely on being able to festoon the couch with my WIPs, I've added a big note to the corner of my To Do notebook titled "Featured Craft Project" and under that I write the name of one of my WIPs.  This is how I got myself to finish the blue lace scarf in record time.  And then the cream simple lace scarf.

So when I consulted my list of WIPs to choose the next Featured Project, I picked some gloves I started about six months ago as a gift.  I'd just started a new page in my To Do notebook, so I created my fancy Featured Craft Project corner and wrote "mustard gloves" in the space.

And then I went in search of them.  I had a feeling there wasn't much left to do on them.  When I unearthed them from the WIP drawer, this is what I discovered ...

I had 12 stitches to bind off.  That's all the knitting that was left.  Seriously.  For those of you that don't knit, I had already bound off half the stitches in that thumb tube ... I was *this close* to finishing.

Obviously I set them down mid-bind off.  I probably had the thought, "I'll be right back to finish this up," but I never came back to them.  They probably hung out on the couch for a week or so where they were ignored or were hidden under other projects.  And eventually they were moved from the arm of the couch. And then they sat in a drawer for, who knows, maybe 4 or 5 of the last 6 months.

I bound off the stitches right after I took these photos.  And after I finish this post, I'm going to weave in all the ends.  And then I'm going to pick a new WIP from the list to become my Featured Project.

Who knows, maybe some day I will run out of WIPs.  Ha!  Just kidding ... that would never happen.  I'm too much of a glutton for the new project high. :)

I just heard a bit on the news yesterday about a study that says our willpower is lessened when we are tired. They used an analogy of walking by a chocolate chip cookie while tired and being unable to resist, because it's *that much harder* to resist when you have had less sleep.
Beware the New Project When Tired! ;P
Seriously though, your Featured Project corner is super cute. :)

cara ... In addition, I saw a study that said that having to make lots of decisions eventually make making decisions harder so you just give in. Similar or the same study, probably. Oh, my hard life makes it hard to resist! :)

Ha! This is so me! I hate binding off, weaving in ends, sewing on buttons. I let a dress for my niece sit for a YEAR needing just the ribbon ties sewn on. I made it ahead of time to gift at her 2nd birthday. I ended up sewing them on sitting in my car in front of her house 90 minutes after the party started!

I do the same thing! Your post helped me figure out why. I don't mind finishing a project. I just like starting new ones more! So . . . I guess I'll finish the striped fingerless gloves before snow flies.

I always love the way you display your work in your photos. The styling in this is just perfect with the mustard yellow on brown and white - one of my favourite combinations. Also, I'm a big procrastinator. I love starting new things! I get so excited to learn how to do something and then see that I can actually do it, but then I lose interest. You've inspired me to go through some of my projects and either finish them or discard/recycle/upcycle/whatever them.

Kimmifer ... I've learned the importance of good photos. Seriously, an emotionally or aesthetically pleasing photo can't be underestimated. I could post the exactly posts with comparatively bad photos (my photos are the best of the best ... still) and I would have half the readers and even less than half the comments.

I do the same thing you do ... when I see that I can accomplish the task I set out to conquer, it's anticlimactic to actually finish it up.

You mean I'm not the only one with numerous WIPs?(I like that term so much more than "unfinished projects!") I love your idea of keeping a To Do notebook to remind yourself about those WIPs, and keeping them all in one space. Now, to go around the house and gather up those WIPs wherever they are!

I definitely have projects like that. A sock that just needs me to kitchener the toes, scarves with ends to weave in, really I need deadlines or projects end up orphaned because they are no longer in the sexy knitting stage (if knitting could be called sexy).

Seanna Lea ... I could call knitting sexy, but I'm weird.

I drive my husband crazy with all my WIPs sitting around the house. He finally caved and let me take over the spare bedroom to make my very own crafting space in hopes that I'll keep all my crafting stuff in one place! I need to make a To Do board or notebook and make sure I finish all the projects I have strewn about. Christmas is just around the corner after all!

That's SO funny. And it makes me feel better about the my old so-close-to-be-being-finished items. I've got 3 sleeves to sew on, then I'll have 2 finished jumpers. Maybe I'll get round to it tonight! Maybe....

But I like the idea of having a featured craft project on a to-do list. (And you do it so prettily too!). No pressure, just hanging there, as a gentle reminder.

Nena Crouch ... Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog. :) These are gloves I designed myself, for myslef http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2011/3/gloves-for-me.aspx there isn't a pattern available yet. You could always take your fave pattern and end them with 2x2 ribbing. :)

Never lost track of a project i have started but i sure have too many started at any given time!

You are right about the lure of a new project... warm cookies...and daydreams! Thank goodness for the fact that Christmas comes whether or not we are ready for it because it does help me get a lot of projects finished!

I have a quilt i started for Diane three years ago. I should make it a Christmas present?

pam ... Ha! Depends on if you think you have the time to finish it AND everything else you do for Christmas. :)

I have two hats for my kids that I crocheted....two years ago. They need a flower sewn onto them. I have way too many WIPs. Of course, they all just need a little bit of work. I probably should devote a day to finishing them. Yeah, maybe tomorrow or next week or something. Remember, it's job security to have WIPs!
