Los Angeles

Last weekend we drove to Los Angeles for a mini vacation.  I didn't even notice that from 1PM Thursday to midnight Sunday I didn't read one email or look at one website.  How crazy is that?  I would have guessed I'd have a little withdraw.

I did indulge my crafty self a bit by going to Kinokuniya (my favorite Japanese bookstore).  As usual, I found a book I couldn't live without ... but I DIDN'T buy it.  What is wrong with me?  I think all the sunshine went straight to my brain.  I'm going to try and find it at the SF store.

We don't usually take a lot of photos of each other on our vacations, but this vacation has the distinction of only having this photo of my legs and another of our reflections to even prove we were there.

Not that this photo proves anything.  But, see, that's sunlight, and we don't get much of that around here in San Francisco in the summer.  Ha!

We stayed right downtown and I really loved it.  Everyone was SO NICE - seriously super-nice.  Random people on the street were nice and told us about cool things to do around LA.  All our waiters and waitresses were nice ... and GOOD.  A lady at the 7-11 wearing 4 extra layers of clothes and a winter coat said, "Excuse me, we're you here first?" to us when the cashier asked who was next.  Even now, I'm stunned.  It was like being in Canada.  It was THAT kind of nice ... sincere nice.

I also learned something from one of these nice people; I learned  what "marine layer" means.  I'd heard it on the news the night before.  Apparently, in LA, they can have air come in from the ocean or from the desert.  When it comes in from the ocean, it's moist and called a "marine layer" and it hovers over the city making it hazy (almost like smog).  When it comes from the desert, it's called a "Santa Anna" and it clears away the moist haze and you can see forever.

Usually, I crave the routine and the familiar, but I really loved this little road trip.  Exploring LA for a couple days was a treat.

It sounds like a good trip.

We tend to have a lot of photos when we go on vacation, because my husband firmly believes that the safest place to be is behind the camera. Unfortunately that leaves me in front of the camera holding things in front of my face whenever I notice.

Seanna Lea ... We usually remember to take pix of each other at a meal. You know, the ones across the table? But this time I didn't even take my camera out. I was all about the relaxing. :)

Glad you had a great time in downtown L.A. I'd love to hear about all of the places you visited! I live in L.A. and am always looking for new adventures!

Ellen B. ... We drove along Mulholland Drive and stopped at every overlook (a guy on a bike told us to try the Angeles Crest Highway next time). We went to the Observatory in Griffith Park (and wished we'd had time to hike the trail there). We walked around the Toy District, Japantown (there was a festival going on), Olvera Street, and (sort of) Chinatown. We walked around Hollywood and Sunset and had drinks (and then dinner!) at Musso & Frank's (so good!). We stopped at Book Soup and bought a small stack of novels and notebooks. We walked around downtown super late at night and passed Pershing Square during a General Public concert when they were playing "Tenderness." A lot for 2.5 days!

Don't get me wrong - LA is wonderful! And there is a lot to do! BUT, you really do need to take a week off and go to San Diego!

Have the two of you ever actually been "tourists" in SF?? Really - I am serious. Just pretend you are tourists and visit all the places and do all the things you haven't yet done?

My favorite, favorite favorite things in SF - riding the trolly and having shrimp cocktail and a martini at the Top of the Mark!

Oh so many, many "tourist" options in SF.

pam ... I'll put San Diego on our list of potential vacation spots! We've done a lot of the touristy things when family comes to visit ... and sometimes just for giggles. One Saturday we hoped on the ferry to Sausalito just for fun ... and it was! We definitely take advantage of our fair city. :) LA was nice because we got to experience sunshine and warmth.

Nice trip! I was in LA a couple of weeks ago and did the same thing, almost. Earlier in the month, while in NYC, I went into the Kinokuniya bookstore and left empty-handed, so knowing I'd be at the one in LA, I made sure to pick up what I wanted!! I don't know what I was thinking that first time. LA was really nice, not what I thought it would be like. Between LA and San Diego (previous commenter) and a trip to San Francisco a few years ago, I'd say San Fran was my favorite place to visit. You're lucky to live in such a nice climate, too!

Tammy ... Jealous of your NY trip! We definitely chose SF because we love it. A little more sun would be nice, but all it's other perks balance that out. :)

I loved reading about your LA experience...it's fun to hear anecdotal proof that doesn't fit with the general big city reputation! One thing for the future - we loved going to the La Brea Tar Pits too.

As a Canadian, I thank you for the compliment and can only hope that the next time you visit us, we can live up to your high praise.

You know, cuz lately, we can get a little rowdy. Sorry 'boot that. :-)

Sounds like a great trip! I love your photo, too. And I think it's a mark of a good trip that you were too busy to take more than 2 photos.

I lived in LA for 5 years before moving to San Francisco in 2003. When I moved, I would tell anyone who listened how much nicer San Franciscans were than Angelinos. I thought it had something to do with the public transportation putting everyone on a level playing field (or something). But now it's completely switched! The past couple of years I've found SF'ers to be incredibly rude...it's like some people think they're the only ones here (or that I'm the only person who will move out of the way of someone approaching me on the sidewalk). Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but I find LA to be a much friendlier city than SF nowadays.

Hilary ... That thing about not moving on the sidewalk totally happened to me! Andrew and I were walking one way and two 20-ish girls were walking the other. We sort of moved to the side, but when we got close the girls stopped walking, stopped talking, and the one in front of me said, "Um, excuse me." and I had to sort of step into the street so they could pass! And these girls were cute little blonds who weren't thuggy at all. I wanted to kick her ass.

We get the Santa Ana winds here in the SF bay area too, you just haven't been here long enough yet ;)

julia @ simple truths ... I lived here for 9 years in the 90s and I don't remember ever hearing about Santa Ana winds up here. You winky face is making me think I'm just being thick and not getting a joke ... ha! :)

ha!! our weather folks just call it the "off shore wind flow." When the air gets hot and still, and the fog stops rolling in for a few days usually in the fall. Maybe I'm the only one who calls them that - some SoCal native probably planted the phrase in my head when I was younger :D

julia @ simple truths ... OK! I know exactly what you're talking about now. :) I remember a day or two around Sept/Oct where I was in bed all night sweating to death and struggling to breathe the hot air.
