Crafting In Public Needs a New Venue

When I first started the Crafting in Public night, I wanted to do it outside at a park.  But in the last year, there's only been one night that we could stay outside for any length of time without hand-cramping cold or blustery winds.

The first time we moved our group over to The Grove Cafe (Yerba Buena) I was a little worried about how that would work ... because I like to worry.  I was worried about people being able to afford to buy stuff every time we get together.  I was also worried about our group growing so big that we'd be a nuisance to the cafe.

But to my surprise, I'd already met one of the cafe employees at another craft get together.  He was super nice and welcoming.  The first 6 months or so, he was usually working when we had our craft night.  He'd stop over and say hi and ask us about the projects we were making.  When we'd leave, everyone behind the counter would yell out, "Bye!  Have a nice night."

I don't think he was the manager and he never gave us "permission" to be there, but we felt welcomed.  And everyone who was in the craft group made a purchase every time we'd meet.  I was really happy about that, too, because the food and drinks at The Grove are $1-3 more than equivalent cafes in the area.  But I figured we were paying a premium for the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Also, our group never really gets that big.  We have a ton of regulars, but not everyone can come every time, so we end up with around 5-6 people total.

Things started changing a couple months ago.  There were three of us there for crafting.  Two of us bought drinks and one bought food (which is more expensive than drinks).  30 seconds after the busboy cleared the plate, a cafe worker I didn't recognize walked over to my friend and handed her a menu, "Would you like to order something?" in a way that made it sound like my friend was squatting at the table.  It was really weird and uncomfortable, but the woman didn't come back after we explained that my friend had just finished eating, so I thought maybe it was just a fluke  ... a misunderstanding.

But then last week one of the guys that works there walked over to us 15 minutes before we were going to leave anyway and announced to the group, "If you want to hang out here you have to keep ordering food," and then he just walked away.  Since the music there is always WAY too loud, I had to repeat it for everyone.  SO EMBARRASSING.  People had food in front of them.  People had drinks in front of them.  There were free tables in the cafe and we were sitting in part of the conversation area that doesn't even have tables for diners anyway.  I was totally taken aback.

If you read the Yelp reviews for the cafe, this is sadly a common occurrence. And at The Grove's other locations, the staff (and the rules) are even more unfriendly. I'm not sure how we managed to not encounter this before now.  I guess we were just lucky.

It's their business and they are welcome to have whatever rules and policies they want.  No question about it.  But I just want to point out that during the week I'd taken 3 friends there after CCE  on Sunday, I'd popped in for an expensive late night snack (one-person hot tea is $4 ...) on Monday, and then had a $20 dinner there on craft night.

I also know that others in my craft group go out of their way to patronize the cafe throughout the month and that people not even in the craft group have gone since they heard about it on my blog.  But I will never go back to The Grove ever again.

Sure, you can have your policies, but you can also be friendly and/or up front about them.  Since I moved here in 1992, I've spent an insane amount of time sitting in cafes.  I've never once seen or heard of anyone being told they had to spend a certain amount of money to stay for a certain amount of time.  If you're going to run your cafe differently than all the other cafes in town, you should be up front about it.

I'm not going to make this mistake again.  I felt so awful to be treated like that ... especially after spending so much money there and telling everyone who would listen how wonderful they are.  I want to find a place where I know they are cool with us being there ... or better yet, a public place.  Maybe you can help!

Do you know of a place that is:
- 5-10 minute walk from Montgomery Station
- Open until 8:30 PM on Wednesdays
- Has seating for 5-10 crafters

Supposedly, we're getting an ING Direct cafe soon...ish.  They will have a public meeting space that is free to reserve, but they haven't answered my email about when they plan to open.  It's also sad that Borders is closed, because they had a public meeting space that was free to reserve, too.  The library isn't an option.  Oh, if only we could meet outside!  If you have any ideas, let me know. :)

I feel your pain! I have also had similar run ins with cafe/group interations which makes things very awkward (especially since I use these local places for work and I spend $$$$/yr in catering at these places!) I am very sad our local Borders is closing. In my rural area it was really one of the few places open past 9 that was non smoking and a good atmosphere. On Tuesdays the chess club would decend on the cafe and I actually enjoyed being there listening to the clicks of the time keepers as the intensity of the games continued. I wish I knew what their alternative location is for our area because I'm sure it would work out well for my continued girls night out dates. Good luck finding a location!

What a terrible policy. I certainly understand that a restaurant needs to have tables turn over to make money, but making people feel unwelcome is never a good business move.

Deirdre ... There are always more than one way to say something and it's weird they chose the most confrontational and uncomfortable way to express themselves. At the same time, maybe they don't want us to come back. In that case, they did the exact right thing. Sucks for me, though. :)

Ack, that stinks.

The Montgomery Bart area is tricky. It kindof clears out after work. I know this might sound strange, but have you thought of going to a hotel lobby and knitting? I don't know if that could be a long term solution, but people are loathe to kick out "hotel guests".

There is a place called Ducca next to the Westin on 3rd which has outdoor seating with fire pits. It seems more like a bar, but that could work.

While it's not in the area you want, Ma'velous (Van Ness Station) was always extremely accomodating for my coding group.

Good luck!

Laura ... The hotel lobby suggestion isn't strange at all! I look at all those comfy chairs and benches all the time and wish we could just go hang out there. It would probably only work once, though, unless we had the OK from the hotel. They'd catch on eventually. :) And what about all the empty storefronts?! I eyeball them, too. I'll try to check out Ducca and Ma'velous to see if they'd work. The idea behind being close to downtown is so that it's easy to get to after work for people downtown. But, you're right, it does become a ghost town around here at 4:45 or so.

That really bites. I know most of the events in my area (which isn't really useful to you) are hosted at Panera, libraries, or yarn shops. I love that my favorite yarn shop has knitting events and doesn't bat an eye that you didn't buy your materials there. Most of us do a lot of shopping there anyway, but it's great that you aren't made to feel guilty that you are using a yarn that they don't carry or something purchased before they opened.

Seanna Lea ... I know of one Panera in the city, and it's kinda far away. There is a yarn shop right around here, but you can only work on a project there if it's with yarn you bought there. Gonna keep lookin'! :)

Hi there -- been lurking a bit here and on the Ravelry group. Have really been meaning to join you all, but haven't gotten it together to do so. Soooo sorry to hear about the Grove. Wow -- one would think that in a down economy, being welcoming to customers would be a given.

Have you tried Samovar? They are only open until 8 on Wednesdays, although they are open until 9 on Thursdays. I am pretty sure they'd be welcoming to a small group -- especially one that purchases drinks and or some dinner.

Bethany Garcia ... You were right about Samovar. Both the corporate office and the Yerba Buena Gardens manager were very nice. We had our last Crafting in Public night there and it was great! :)

I am amazed at the total rudeness you & your group endured. I totally agree with everything you said. I don't live anywhere near you, but other options we have locally include yarn shops, quilt shops, libraries (I know), & even churches have meeting areas that they either loan out or charge a tiny fee for the electricity. Good luck.

Is there a Pandera around there? They are usually pretty good (at least where I live) about having groups hang out, eat a little, and too of course.

Ugh, that's terrible! I live in San Francisco, too, and am making a mental note to never EVER set foot in that place. My knitting friends and I used to meet regularly at Samovar (in Yerba Buena Gardens). But it's somewhat expensive there, too, and they can probably only seat 10 people outside. However, the staff never gave us any trouble for being there for a long time or if a couple of us didn't order food. This isn't the most romantic of spots, but what about the food court in the mall (the one under Bloomingdale's, not the one under Nordstrom's)? It's kind of loud but the food options are SO yummy and there are big tables. There's also a Coffee Bean between the Powell and Montgomery stops on Market (closer to Powell, I think). Maybe that could be an option?

Hilary ... Great suggestions! Samovar's corporate office and the Yerba Buena Gardens location's manager were very nice. We had our last Crafting in Public night there and it was great! I don't think I've been in the under-Bloomies food court ... must check that out. The Coffee Bean is usually pretty packed after work, or it would be a good choice, too.

If you ever feel like joining us, you're more than welcome! :)

Ugh, Mo told me about what happened this weekend and I was really sad to hear it. I have really gone out of my way to purchase a food and a drink every time we are there and as a result of the craft meetups I have used it for several other meetings, purchasing food every time. Not sure that I have any additional suggestions, but I hope we find a new place

That is yucky behavior. And dumb. Word of mouth is the best advertisement . . . good or bad. I hope you can find a super kick-ass place.

Ugg why would they be so rude? I mean there were tables open and you guys had food in front of you! Boo on the Grove Cafe! If they have some policy they could have let you guys know nicely. Why would they be so thoughtless as to antagonize people and lose customers? When something like that happens I seriously refuse to give a store anymore of my business. That's why I haven't bought anything from the Barnes and Nobles near us in four years now.

Sorry this happened to you! I won't be going there, that's for sure. What about one of the big common tables near Peet's in the Ferry Building? You could grab a drink from Peet's or Blue Bottle. Might be chilly in winter though.

LindaV ... I was just over there, and I considered it, but it's really loud and echo-y with all of the concrete. It's also a little far from where we all work downtown. It might make a nice one-off spot when the weather is beautiful. I love being there near the water and we walk over there a lot on the weekend to sit out on the benches along the water.
