Cuckoo For Cables

I'm totally smitten with knitted cables lately.  This is a bunch of pre-work for a headband/earwarmer.  None of the stitching shown here was used in the final headband.

All this work was to figure out exactly how to make braided cables start with skinny braid-bits that grow thicker as they tangle around each other.

And then I was determined that the braid-bits had to come out of the ribbing in an aesthetically pleasing manner (this is me rolling my eyes because that's the part of the headband that will be hidden under my hair ... but I'll *know* it's there, right?)

I was also trying to decide how wide the piece needed to be (to cover my ears) and whether I liked the straight edges or the wavy edge of the braids on either side.

This is a ton of work that just got frogged (a couple of times more than you see here, too), but I learned the anatomy of a cable.  I know how to identify the row that crosses over and count up from that to know how many rows I've done since the cross.  Invaluable cable-info, for sure.

I'm 99.9% done with the finally headband.  I'll post pix when I get the finishing touches done.

Wow! Your cables are great. That seems like a lot of work with no finished product, but the information that you got from it has to be just as valuable, if not more so! Can't wait to see the finished headband!

You'll be seeing cables in your sleep! It's so satisfying when you know why a stitch acts in a certain way. You are not just reliant on someone elses pattern, but able to play with the technique as you like. Well done you.

Wow, I love what you've come up with! How do you know how many rows you've knit since you crossed over? I still don't know how to tell!

Wow - those cables look perfectly executed! I still feel a bit baffled with the inner workings of knits and purls. And I'm only kidding a little - when I have unravel for a row and put stitches back on the needle, I still can't figure out if I have the stitch on the needle in the right direction. Then I just go by the feel whether to knit as usual or knit into the stitch.

Are you knitting a headband in preparation for the fall or are you not having a full-fledged summer either?

Vicki K ... Debbie Stoller's Stitch 'n Bitch book (and Superstar Knitting, when you're ready) are VERY helpful for a newbie knitter. They are clearly written books with great illustrations. I know how stitches sit on my needles because of an illustration of smiling stitches sitting on a needle (like kids sitting on a log) and one frowning stitch who is sitting backwards.

Protip: The right-most leg of the stitch should be at the front of the needle (no matter what side of the needle you're looking at).

You! YOU! I am shaking my head!

I watched a woman over the weekend working on a very complicated all criss crossed twisted up and over itself cable and all I can say is NEVER! My goodness - the finagling and twisting and moving from this needle to that needle and removing this stitch to place on that needle only to then do something weird with it and put it back on the needle..... Nearly fried my brain.

But of course, you are light years ahead of me even though we learned to knit at about the same time! I bow to your genius!

pam ... I had a bunch of trouble (twisted stitches, etc) until I found these wonderful Clover cable needles. With a pair of those I could have you cabling in 10 minutes flat. ;)

"This is me rolling my eyes because that's the part of the headband that will be hidden under my hair ... but I'll *know* it's there, right?" Oh, I so hear you on this. I spend the most time fraking out about the details that no one else will ever know about!

Your knitting looks great, and I remember it wasn't that long ago that you were just beginning to teach yourself to knit!

You realise that you make people like me look bad when you do all this prep work for your projects, don't you? I've only made a swatch about once in my life. I am an expert in unravelling and picking up stitches to try something over again, mind...

Love the headband idea! I agree that cables are soooo addictive! I love a good cable needle, too. I've tried cabling without one, and it's fine, but I just *like* the process of using the cable needle. Once I took a project out in public and forgot my cable needle -- I found that a toothpick isn't a bad substitute in a pinch!

I learned the proper way for stitches to sit on the needle from the Stitch and Bitch book too! Super handy if you need to frog or tink!
