Pillow

I wanted to put a softer top on the ottoman on which to rest my tired feet, so I made this ottoman pillow.  I've since learned it's also perfect for hiding my feet underneath when it's chilly.

Andrew bought me fabric for my birthday, a yard each of three beautiful prints, and this floral matched our red couch and light blue side table perfectly.  It makes me super happy to have the fabric out where I can see it every day.

I made the pillow in December in the intervals between doing the laundry (laundry in, wait 20 mins, laundry in drying, wait 20 mins, check dryer, wait 20 mins, get laundry and fold it, done).  So it took about an hour to make.  That includes sewing one entire edge by hand.

I like the flat eighth-inch edge around the pillow.  I thought that kind of edge was called a knife edge, but google says otherwise.  Anyone know what my edge finishing is called?  Perhaps it's just a knife edge variant?

The reason I hadn't blogged it before now is that I took 67 photos of the process of making the pillow and I planned to do a tutorial-type post.  The pillow isn't that complicated, so I think the world can do without a tutorial for it ... which makes this a much easier post to write.

I would like to share my pillow insert tip, though: the cheapest bed pillow at the linen outlet that costs $2.99.  I cut open the pillow and pulled out the extra fluff to make it square.  I've seen tiny pillow forms for $7. Go thrifty me!

Well, it's the truth that I took 67 photos for this project, but it's also true that 14 of them are blurry photos of me hugging the pillow.  You gotta capture all of the important steps, right? ;)

Awesome. I definitely like your thrifty pillow insert method. Of course, I love super squishy pillows so I might have tried to rearrange the fluff to fill the squared off pillow more full.

Seanna Lea ... Or get two and stack 'em up. Still cheaper than an insert. :)

Actually, that's the most important step! What a happy fabric - it really marries your sofa and table together. Another insert strategy: occasionally at TJMaxx or Marshalls or Tuesday Morning they'll have pillows marked way down. People can't imagine why I would want such an ugly pillow. But I don't. I want the insert!

Vicki K ... GREAT TIP!!! At first I thought the red/ light blue thing was strange, but I'm really loving it now. We also use cream as an accent color. It's a fun and energetic color scheme for sure.

Love that pillow! I've been trying to motivate myself to make new throw pillows for my couch. Perhaps I'll have to go fabric hunting. :D

I love binder clips. I hoped briefly you would reveal how to incorporate them into a pillow, but realized what a comfort-killer that would be.
Do you think that edge is a mini flange? Or sort of a self-welt?
The fabric looks like a mash up of your flower purse, office chairs and the tunisian stripes. Good eye, Andrew.

Kelly ... I have a thing for binder clips as well. I use them whenever possible (chip clips, cord corralers, clip-on hangers). Here I used them to hold the to-be-sewn edge so it would be straight and aligned. Using pins can cause misalignment and puckers in the seam.

You are correct about the mini-flange decoration. Weird that flange is also the name of a guitar pedal. Perhaps it flattens out the sound? Mr. FG does have a good eye for colors design. He's a keeper.

Great cushion, I have been known to cut up an old flat bed pillow, just to get at the filling when I have run out and couldn't be bothered to go to the shops - or it was a holiday and they were all shut, or my local LYS had run out. It's amazing how much it fluffs up again when you pull it apart, so even more of a bargain.

Sheilasembroidery ... I didn't think of fluffing it up. Thanks for the tip. :)

I love your pillow fabric. I've been meaning to make some pillows since I visited my parents and saw their sad, coffee-stained pillows (what kind of silly parents buy WHITE pillows?). Using a cheap pillow instead of a pillow form is an excellent idea.

Those pictures are great - that is pure pillow joy!

I think that it is a pillow with a top stiched edge. A flange would have to have a noticeable amount of fabric between the edge and the stitching. It is really cute and does what you wanted it to do. I find often on simple pillows if you round the corners that it still appears square and you do not have the pointy bits in the corner. This is what most fabric workrooms do as well.

Kristine McCorvey ... I definitely wanted the pointy corners. :) It looks crisp, especially since the pillow is super-flat. If this http://sewing.about.com/od/freeprojects/ss/flangedsham_3.htm is what a flange edge is, then mine is a flange, it's just an eighth of an inch wide instead of 3", hence the "mini".

I'm slowly learning how to sew and want new cushions for sofa- just gotta sew straighter! Love your cushion by the way x

MummyCat ... Thank you! I like to sew things with straight edges that I cut with a ruler and the rotary cutter. Then I just sew slowly using the guides on the sewing machine. Those are my secrets.

Love the finished pillow, the pillow insert idea, the thriftiness, the binder clips, AND the fuzzy photos of you holding your pillow. It's all great! I can identify with the fuzziness of photos...I have moments of that with my blog, too. Sometimes it's just the way it is :-]. Cheers to you.

And all this time i thought I was such a clever girl buying those deeply discounted pillows to use for fill. The fill works great for stuffies too!

Your new pillow is beautiful with your sofa and ottoman.

This makes me laugh. Laugh because of the part where you write that you hide your feet under it when it's chilly. I do that with the extra pillow on our bed. Co-sleeping with the kids I always have one arm out and when it's cold I stick it in the pillowcase under the pillow. So when you wrote that...hee hee hee. :)

Nice job! I have recently started sewing and it is so rad to be able to make fun, usable gifts for friends (and me!) I even made a dress... with the tips I remember from my grade 8 home ec. class 17 years ago!

One of these days I'm gonna make the time to go through all your posts and write down all those little things..I'm sure it will take some time but look at all the time I'd be SAVING in the long run.

1) I LOVE the fabric. And the color scheme it goes with.

2) Your wash machine only takes 20 minutes?!? I think I need a new washer!

3)I think your edge is called a Successive Binder Clip Edge. (ha ha - I shouldn't be writing comments this early in the morning.) No, Micro-Flange Knife Edge Variant about sums it up, I'd say.

4) I wish I had a dollar for every set of photos I took for a tutorial I never wrote. ...Well, no, I wish I had a HUNDRED dollars for every...
