Tunisian Crochet Purse Wrap Up, Part 1

I recently unearthed my Tunisian crochet purse  (from a planetjune.com pattern) and put the finishing touches on it.  The first thing I wanted to do is fix the curl on the front opening of the bag.

In the months since I blocked it, the bag has been carried around, stuffed into my project bag, and I sort of ruined the blocking by not keeping it flat.  Instead of re-blocking it, I decided to reinforce the top edge.

I added four rows of single crochet to the top edge.  Here is is as seen from the outside on the left and from the inside on the right.

Then I cut a piece of plastic boning (mine is Dritz Rigilene) to the length of the top edge.  You can see here that it's a flat and wide.  It's mesh-like plastic that is fairly rigid.

It comes on a roll, so there is a slight arc to it.  I tucked the boning into the pocket so the arc bowed out and sewed the flap down to cover it.

Ta da!  Now my bag has a nice flat edge at the front opening.

You are one smart cookie. I've never heard of plastic boning . . . something to keep my eye out for in the future.

mafe ... I also use this trick in bag linings: create a channel in the top of the lining and insert the boning there.

This is a trick I'm familiar with in the land of corsets. None of my corsets had boning, but most of the people in the SCA at least had busks (I probably spelled that wrong).

I love your purse. The colors are great, and I like the boning idea. I have just recently started playing with tunisian crochet, and I think I may follow your idea - I couldn't get the front of my coin purse thingy to lay flat either! Thanks so much for the tip!

Tunisian crochet is on my (long) list of things to try. How do you like it compared with "regular" crochet?

julia @ simple truths ... I like it fine. I think of it as something totally different from crochet. I'd love to investigate it more. The coolest Tunisian stitch I've ever found, I used on some legwarmers http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2006/1/story-of-legwarmers.aspx I think it's a craft with a TON of untapped potential.
