Home Projects

This weekend we got some organizing done around the apartment.  It's amazing how a little rearranging and consolidation can make your space feel 10X bigger.

One of the sorta-crafty projects was creating bookends on our MONSTER-SIZE shelves.  We both had a slew of ideas that were sort of involved (like fabric covered plywood attached with velcro straps), but we eventually came up with the brilliantly simple idea to get sheets of plastic custom cut at TAP Plastics.

I'd only ever peeked in the windows of the store, and it was everything I'd hoped for and more.  They have all sorts of little boxes, bottles, and plastic-related craft supplies.  I wish I'd taken photos, because there is just no way to explain it sufficiently.  It's like a crafty wonderland.

We went up to the counter, picked out the red plastic that matches our couch, told him the dimensions we wanted, and they cut the pieces right then.  Cake!

This photo is for Pam because I've joked about all the bookmarks I leave in my craft books.  I seem to keep adding more instead of using the one that's already there.  There's something about leaving a bookmark in a book that tickles me.

While we were waiting for our plastic to be cut, I walked around the store and discovered that they had rotary cutting mats and rulers for about one-third less than the art store near us.  Woohoo!  That's one of the things I still needed to replace from our move.  I'd kept my rotary cutter.

As soon as I got home, I cut some fabric strips and spruced up one of the other purchases on our organizing shopping spree.  This was ridiculously cheap guitar stand, which makes me a little suspicious of the foam they used.  To protect Andrew's guitar, I wrapped a strip of fabric around the two padded arms and just tucked the end of the strip under itself.  Easiest recover job ever. :)

Your bookmark method looks a lot like mine, though mine is almost exclusively used for cookbooks (especially my awesome Indian and ice cream cookbooks). I must enjoy my browsing time through the pattern books too much.

What a smart idea. And it would seem I have some free time since I am catching up on my reading. But I really don't. I am typing this one handed while Nathan is asleep in my lap. Maybe I can learn to crochet one handed. ;-)

Kuky ... Oh, I know better about you and free time. ;) haha! maybe if you put a clip on the wall, it could hold your crocheting and you could use your one free hand to wield the hook.

There are a huge number of things in this post turned my frown upside down today. First, the creative organizing solutions and the fact that you used a photo of your book-shelf as an example of your efforts. And secondly, I can't believe how many pedals you have. You could totally made a completely tricked-out pedal board. Perhaps a future crafty project?

Kimmifer ... Good eye! That isn't even all his pedals, either. There are a handful still in the closet. We used to have several boards with velcro to arrange them and transport them, but they don't move around anymore, so they just have a cozy welcome mat to lounge around on. :)

I'm jealous of those who can play guitar well enough to merit even thinking about a pedal board. Wind instruments don't generally have cool gadgets like that.

My cat has been chewing the plastic on my husband guitar stand and your fabric wrapping idea is perfect! Can't wait to fix ours up too.

kelli ... What an awesome job! Must have been so much fun to be able to work with all those cool materials. :) Have you thought about coming to our craft night at The Grove?
