Furry Fennec Fox (or cutting fabulous fur ribbon)

When I found this ribbon on the notions wall at the local fabric store, I about died.  This was about a year ago when I last had a bee in my bonnet to finish up the fox.  I had worried about the tail.  I've used feather boas for tails in the past, but I thought that might be too fluffy for the fox. This ribbon is perfect.

It's soft and silky and pet-able.  Yes, I pet it.  All the time. :)

When I bought my length of ribbon, the fabric store worker had to cut it from the roll.  I noticed that she carefully parted the fur before she cut into it.  I thought that was really smart.

I use the pointed end of my manicure scissors to make a precise part along the gridded base of the ribbon.  You could use any pointed, but non-cutting edge to help you make a clean part in the fur before you cut.

This technique gave me an idea.  Why not cut little strips to be the fur that peeks out of the fennec fox's ears and for their cute furry eyebrows?  Here are the pieces  I cut.

Yes, that's my knee in my velour lounge pants.  Yes, that's a sewing needle stuck in the fabric of my lounge pants on the left.  Yes, I totally hurt myself all the time using my pants as a pin cushion. ;)

Here's an in-progress shot of the fox's face with the fur bits tucked into the unfinished ear flaps and atop the eyes.  The fur adds a creepy level of realness.  The other night I saw the fox out of the corner of my eye where it sits tucked on the shelf in between craft sessions.  For a heartbeat, I thought it was a real animal.  Would that be terrifying or what?!

Oh my Goodness! Your little fennec fox is adorably realistic! I couldn't picture the finished product until seeing your "in progress" shot with the fur ribbon above the eyes and in the ears. I wish I had your talent to bring creative ideas to fruition. Can't wait to see the little guy when he's finished.

It looks so real!! It's almost creepy having the pins in it. I am so looking forward to the finished fox. The wisps of fur in the ears and eyebrows totally make it.

Seeing the little pins in his face reminds me of mounting and framing butterflies and things. I'm not a bug collector myself, but it's always intrigued me on a creepy level.
Also, the fox is Bad. Ass.

Hi there, I've been keeping up with your foxy activities and I must say, you are very talented. I even googled the little critter to see what a real one looks like and wow!!! You are absolutely right, it is very realistic. I wish I had the patience required to create such a detailed project. I can't wait to see him completed.

Have a great rest of your day. :)

Oh wow, the fur inside the ears is INSPIRED!! It's funny, all the other commenters say he, but in my head your foxy friend is a she:-) I also use my pants as a pin cushion. I forget that they're there though- I've gone out shopping with pins around my knees....oops!

That fox has definitely already got his personality, Mr. Crafty Fox.
Ouch, stop putting your pins in your legs........ although that is better than dropping a large tapestry needle on the sofa and sitting on it as I did.

Ohhh he is so stinkin' cute it hurts! And yeah, I thinks that "he's" a he. At a glance, I can't believe that the eyes are not purchased glass/plastic whatever, cuz I see the "sheen" in them.

Wow! And that's just what my daughter said too, seeing the photo at the end. And then asked "Did somebody sew that?" When I said Yes, she continued "They must be a good sewer." Yup, I agree!

P.S. loved the sequin/button tip from the other post...

I love the peek of fur in his ears. When I typed that it made me think of little old men with hair growing out of their ears. Don't know why my mind went there. Does that happen? And then the fur on the eyebrows made me think of little old man eyebrows. What the heck? Why am I thinking of little old men?

Kuky ... Ha! Yes, that does happen. Old men sprout hair all over the place, esp the ears. ;)

Ha! I use my pants as a pin cushion all the time! Less so, actually, now that I don't do a lot of actual needlework anymore, but sometimes it really is just the easiest thing.

Huh! I work at JoAnn Fabrics and we cut fur trim all the time, it never occurred to me to part it before we cut it. With larger fur though, that's much harder to do...
Your idea here is really ingenious, but I have to admit, part of me went "oh, duuhhhhh!"

So Cu-u-u-ute! I used to sew a lot with fake fur & I would turn it upside down, then keeping my scissors close to the backing would cut on those same lines. The tufts really make the project, don't they?

Wow, that fox is AMAZING. It looks fantastic! This is a great tip-- I've been working with faux fur fabric lately and having trouble with the "shedding" that happens when I cut it. I'm going to try cutting it this way!

Pants as pin cushion? I do that too. Also pillows and/or the arm of the couch. Especially for extra pins. Have to remember to take them out though...

And I love all your details on this! The white "reflection" on the eyes makes such a difference; would never have thought to do that. And the furry eyebrows kill me.
