Dreaming of Snuggles

A couple weeks ago when I was sick, I spent a crazy amount of time in bed.  All I wanted to do was snuggle up in my comfy bed and sleep.  That's exactly what I did, too.  But in between sleeping and sleeping, I would daydream about how much more snugly it would be in my bed if I had a blanket I made myself.

At a certain point, I just couldn't sleep anymore, and I ended up sitting on the couch with a bucket of leftover yarn (from my chair covers) making swatches.

My first idea was to create some sort of peacock feather motif by doing surface crochet while making striped rows.  I think this idea has merit, but I didn't really do a good job of pulling it off here.

In the swatch on the  right, the blue, orange, and green all loop down from the top rows to meet the matching bottom row, and then go back up where they finish across.

Look at the crazy 3-D effect the surface single crochet makes.

Once I got frustrated with the peacocking, I pulled out my crochet stitch pattern books.  I really really want to make a striped blanket, so that's why there's a cacophony of color here.

I really love the motif center-top that looks like a big fat red flower with tan leaves.  But it's not stripes.  I want stripes.

None of these really light my fire.  I'm leaning toward this spiky ripple stitch, but it's not knocking my socks off either (although in the right colors, it could be phenomenal).

Do you have any striped blanket suggestions?

I really like this stitch (http://yarn-muse.blogspot.com/2011/01/crocodile-stitch.html), and it looks like it would be easy enough to stripe it up without running into the problem of it looking wonky or boring.

Seanna Lea ... Thanks for the link. I think that might be a little too warm for me. :) I'm like a furnace at night. Ha! I do love that stitch, though.

I recently discovered Mason-Dixon knitting and the log cabin theme with the big square and stripes coming off each side. Maybe there is a crochet version? Btw, your foundation crochet video saved my sanity when I was trying to teach myself how. Thanks so much <3

Have a look at http://attic24.typepad.com/ in the ta-dah moments, patterns and tutorials (for example, the neat ripple pattern), and the current posts (Lucy is crocheting a blanket right; there is even a flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/1802262@N23/).

I'm also participating in the Ripple-a-Long at Attic24. I'm only a couple of rows in though. http://emeraldspools.blogspot.com/2011/10/i-can-ripple.html

What about a larkspur stitch. It is really easy to do, but looks complicated!

There is a gorgeous blanket on Ravelry, called the Wool-Eater Blanket. It looks rather thick though. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

BerryFine ... I love that one. It's great for a square, not sure for a rectangle.

I'm looking for a new pattern too now.I was tinkering with this one yesterday but didn't have that Wow! moment with it myself.http://www.flickr.com/photos/lmk25/6251045546/in/photostream/

I think I need a heftier yarn to try. When I did the queen sized blankie for Us, I did a ripple. Easy, not hard to match the tension from session to session, but not for the easily bored. I like your shells swatch, it has a nice texture to it, but it's not too bossy.

Larkspur stitch might be a nice balance between stripes and something with some pop to it.

Hi Alice - don't know if you've seen my previous comment yet, with the suggestion to look at Kristen's gorgeous blanket at http://cozymadethings.blogspot.com/ - but I've just looked again, and she's posted the ravelry link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/greenway
Hope you like it!

I love your swatches, and I do the same thing. It seems like ripple patterns of various sorts are in again, and they work great with stripes.

Have you thought of maybe a simple granny striped blanket. There is a great pattern at http://www.purlbee.com/granny-stripe-blanket/. The colors are kinda boring in my book, but if you changed then up it would be great.
I look forward to seeing what you do!

Jennifer kane ... I have considered it. Not sure I want the holes though. I def think I could spice up the color combo. ;)

there's a pretty bargello throw on Ravelry that combines stripes with the peacock thing you started with:

Alice ... Man, that's gorgeous! Tunisian crochet may be a little thicker than I want for a blanket, but I love the pattern on that blanket. Bookmarking!

I once tried to make an afghan with a square pattern, just continuing the squares a few layers. The shells one you did would look cool large. I'm also obsessed with granny square afghans, but can't figure out how to make them for the life of me.

LilMissRedTShirt ... Gah! Sorry for that first reply. :) I clicked the wrong comment to reply to. :) My friend Anne makes all her baby blankets as one big granny square. They are adorable and super simple. http://www.purlbee.com/granny-square-project/ Just follow the directions for a granny square and just add more rows (two in each corner is where you increase) :)

I dunno if you'd be into these: lark's foot or catherine's wheel. They're stripey, and I have been pining for a blanket -- anything -- in either of these.

Wow! These are awesome ideas! I will definitely use them. I love making crafts so much, but recently I have not been able to figure out what to make! After reading your blog I have gotten so many more ideas. I will definitely try and make a comfy blanket to snuggle with when I am sick! Thanks for all the ideas!
