Loving The Ugly

Ever since I figured out how to do the crochet loop stitch, I've wanted to use it on a project ... like REALLY wanted to use it on a project.

And then a month, or so, ago, I saw this in Macy's display window.  Horrifying, right?!  So super ugly.  Probably ridiculously expensive, too.  But it's crocheted, so I took a phone snap of it.  What?  You don't believe me ...

Here's the close up to prove it.  Those are double crochet stitches, my friend.  Sure, the collar is knitted, but the rest of it is crocheted.

And, as ugly as it is, I became a little obsessed.  It is, after all, loopy crochet.  And, even better, it's for sale in Macy's.  Everyone walking by Union Square, the fancy shopping part of town, would have seen that loopy crochet sweater.  It lends the ugly sweater a little bit of respectability, a little bit of legitimacy, a little bit of sure-it's-ugly-but-it's-fashion.

Then, I was in this super chic hipster boutique on Valencia, DEMA, and I saw a black loopy crochet vest. WHAT?!  I was on different mission (not hunting loopy vests), so I didn't think to take a snap or check the price (I can assure you it was pricey, though).  But I *did* point it out to my shopping partner, so I have a corroborating witness.

It's like I was being taunted ... teased.  Like everyone got together and said, "Let's make something using loopy crochet that is SO ugly and SO ridiculous and see if we can trick Alice into making one.  Go!"

But now that I'd seen two, I thought maybe crochet loopy vests really *were* in style.  Plus there are fur vests everywhere (we've dubbed them "Conans").  So in an effort to see if I was going nuts, I did a google search for loopy crochet vests, and I found TWO MORE.

Left is Bongo for $26 at Kmart (probably acrylic - if you click through, you can see the crochet stitches in the open neck) and right is on Bluefly for $195 retail (it's named Autumn Cashmere, but it's 100% cotton -- and it's SOLD OUT).

Now, if you've ever googled anything weird, you've noticed that Google and every website in the world is keeping tabs on you in the creepiest of ways.  I didn't realize this until I started seeing the Bluefly sweater in ads on every website I visited in the weeks after my search.

I couldn't escape from my loopy vest obsession.  I had no way to let the memory fade because every time I'd check the weather or get directions I had a gray loopy vest taunting me from the right column.

And now I'm doomed.  I want to make a Conan of my very own ... in gray, of course (or brown, and I'd call it "Grizzly").  I think the only thing that's saving me from bringing this monster to life if my lack of free time.  Although I can't promise that I won't *make* time ... especially if I see One. More. Loopy. Vest.

I totally agree - that's a big crochet/fashion offence - especially the grey ones which look like faded dog rugs : )

You HAVE to make it! It could be your Halloween costume.

Sally ... Not a holiday person (although, if I was, Halloween would be the fave). But I think I've been seduced by the call of the loops. Already swatching ...

Silvia ... Actually, it didn't even take another one. ;) The swatch is looking awesome.

The loopy vests are hilarious. I was walking down Newbury Street and saw a loopy (or fur, it was a while ago) monstrosity in one of the high end fashion windows (I wish I could remember the designer). Sometiems something really can be so bad that it is good.

Seanna Lea ... Agreed. And hopefully mine will fill that bill, because I could resist not longer. :)

Ok well maybe something is wrong with me. I don't think they are horrendously ugly. Says girl that used to have and LOVE to wear a yellow toy fur like coat. Not bright yellow mind you. A mellow yellow.

And I rarely notice ads. Now I will have to look to see what things it may be trying to entice me with.

Kuky ... I don't normally notice the ads, either. But I *knew* that the gray fur ad for Bluefly couldn't have been a coincidence.

This is great, especially in light of our trend chat this morning. I always feel driven to try out a new technique when I see it, even if I don't make the actual "thing" that's out there... I hope you do see more loopy vests, because I want to see your version!

Amy ... Looks like you'll get your wish. I've stared mine (or at least as swatch, since I only have one skein of the yarn I'm using).

I say do the brown "Grizzly"!! At least for Halloween?!

Nicole ... Haha! You're the first vote for a "Grizzly." I don't have any browns right now, so I've started a swatch in gray. Looking loopy!

i have to say.... i really like them (on the right body). my grandma has a similar vest from the 70s and i thought it was pretty groovy. and just last weekend my friend wore a vintage one and looked FAB! she's super petite though - i think if i wore one i'd look like a freakin' mama gorilla! but they'd be fun to make i BET.

pilgrim ... Yes. It does seem the tiny girls can get away with the fashion equivalent of murder. Just look at any Japanese crochet pattern book with clothes or accessories in them. They look A-dorable in things I would burn if I found them in my closet. :) I've started a loopy swatch and it *is* fun!

Ugly???It is so cool looking.:D Loopy crochet is so intriguing. I had a small-scale project in mind, to make an amigurumi completely in loops and make it look sort of furry.
9/28/2010 9:58 PM

futuregirl replied ...
Kavitha ... That's a great idea! You can also cut the loops to make them look even more furry. :)

I think the one on the right looks like she's wearing a bathroom rug! And, full disclosure, I had a shaggy vest that I wore in the 70's that I thought was very cool at the time :-)

futuregirl replied ...
Mimi K ... What color was your vest? Oh, please, let it be some rainbow-y combo! ;) I hadn't thought of the bathroom rug comparison, but you are right on.

I'm not really one for dangles or loops on my clothes...but that's because anything dangly on me tends to get hooked to stuff. Call me a clutz...but if I were to wear one of those loopy sweaters and walk pass some bushes I'll probably get snagged ;)
9/29/2010 7:02 PM

futuregirl replied ...
Michelle B. ... Me, too! But, you can totally cut all the loops to make them even more fur-like. Then you'll just have to worry about things sticking to your "fur" instead of worrying about getting yanked back two steps every time you walk by something that could snag a loop. :)

Haha, that's hilarious. But actually, if it was fuzzy enough, I don't think it would be THAT bad. Your picture of the Kmart one looks softer/fuzzier than the website picture, which I like better. Maybe. I can't see ever paying for one.

But I understand the need to make something, no matter how ugly.

Kristen ... Glad to know you understand, because I've started a swatch, and it looks like I'm going to end up with one of these. :)

That's a great idea Alice. Stuff sticking to my 'fur' is much easier to handle than being snagged :)
I remember wearing a furry woolly sweater a couple of winters ago in Bremen. It kept me nice and warm..but wasn't fashionable at all...when you're freezing who really cares ya? It was grey and 3 sizes too big and I could wear my other sweats underneath..problem was getting it off...we went to an Irish pub on New Year's Eve and I had to stand with my hands up while my friends got the 'sheep' over my head...fun times! :)

I ABSOLUTELY Love 'em! I like to be different and not looking like a fashion model wearing what everyone else is and I find this a bit different so yes I LOVE THEM! Honestly, when you're a Hippy from the '70s it's easy to love this style after all Cher wore something very similiar back then lol Don't be afraid to try new things that are different, that's what makes you, you :}}
Peace
