More Thread Crochet

Somehow I failed to mention in my last post that my whole crochet thread kick is because I want to make a crochet overskirt.  In fact, I was telling my friends in January that it was one of my plans for the year.  Sonya of Wax and Wool was nice enough to let me dip into her stash of crochet cotton.  But then life got busy.

Now that I have more time to craft,  I've got thread crochet on the brain.  Friday night as I was falling asleep I got a novel idea for overskirt construction.  I was unbelievably comfortable and it was unbelievably late, but I *still* got up and made a note because I didn't want to forget!

And this little sketch was all I needed to get me crocheting.  I spent all my free time this weekend exploring this technique.

The work evolves as you move from left to right.  I started out with fsc verticals, then made fsc verticals with rows of sc around them, then started actually linking my chain loops to each other (instead of just sorta linking them).

I still have some other ideas to try out with this design.  I'm not sure which one would work best for an overskirt.  I'm not sure I'll know until I've made the whole darn thing.  But I *am* sure that I love the way this pattern looks, and if I don't use it for the overskirt, I'm definitely going to use it for something.

What a great idea. I personally like the pattern farthest to the left but any of it would be really pretty as an overlay.

kate ... Thanks for your thoughts. I agree with you, I like the strong vertical lines and lacy connections in between.

Wow, that looks amazing! I can't even fathom how you came up that and I'm really impressed. Can't wait to see more of it. :D

Wow that is incredible! You could make sweet chain mail overshirt with a pattern like that. I have to make costumes for my history-teacher-husband - so my ideas are warped...:)
I can't wait to see the finished product!! :D

Looks really interesting...your previous post on Victorian crochet inspired me to read about it on internet. Ran across this on Irish Crochet Lace. You prob already know this museum in Berkeley but just in case here is a link to a past exhibit. Oh how I wish I lived close enough to visit this place! Have you been there?

Barbara ... Um, no! How did I miss this?! Their mannequins are a little creepy, but it looks like they have cool stuff. :) There's a July Clones Lace workshop I'd love to attend, but it's $250 *and* I'd have to take 3 days off work. :(

I love how it looks against the dark background! And I hadn't heard of an "overskirt" before but imagine it will look fabulous.

Sidenote -- a tip that has been serving me well: tuck a small notebook and pen along with a tiny flashlight near your bedside. then when those ideas/reminders/worries/etc won't let you rest, you can quick jot them down. : )

karin @ madebyk ... Maybe I made overskirt up. (is there an emoticon for looking up and to the right like, "Who me?"?) I don't know if there's a real word for it. I just want one! :) I'll be putting a note book on my side table tonight!

I love what you are doing. Please visit my blog and take a look at my recycled plastic bag crocheted dress - I made it up as I went along. Now I know that sounds strange - but it looks better than it sounds! I think you would like it. It's in the March archives. Good luck with your work.

i like the idea...think that maybe the links could be inter-twined (actually looped, kind'a like a chain-link fence??) that would be cool and a bit more fluid, if that is what you are going for...just by looking at the swatch, it made me think of that.

kate the kid ... Yes, some bits are kind of chain link fencey, but not totally. Maybe I'll try that. :)

That is awesome. I don't think my crochet skills are ever going to progress past the sc stitch. I had to google fsc. :-D
