Wonky Phone Cozy

I've been using my courdory bag to go to the laundr-o-mat and grocery store.  I have a brand new fancy phone, and I feel like protecting it.  There was a perfect little project in the Stitch 'n' Bitch book!

It was also an excuse to knit some stripes!  My favorite!  I didn't actually follow the pattern.  It's only an accident that my stripe repeat wrapped around the phone exactly.

Here is the inside before I folded it to seam up the sides.  You can see from the front and interior stripes that my tension is all over the place.  See how the one pink stripe looks super fat and the others look super skinny?  They are all just one row tall.

I didn't want to use a button, because I have visions of it cracking the face of my phone.  It slips in the slit easily and still won't come out once it's in, so the button is unnecessary.  I had no patience with the seaming.  I steamrolled through it.

And it shows. :)

It's great, though, because it protects my phone and it's very textured.  I can stick my hand in my bag and instantly find my phone without fumbling around.

Knit project #1 ... done!

The stripes are great, but the colors are even better. I love it when something I make has a practical purpose. Now I just need to get a cell phone so I can make one of these babies!

Great idea and so cute. I like the idea of the texture, so you can feel it when you are reaching in to your bag to find it.

It's great....but I don't knit. Maybe I can create a crochet version, and use some of my stash at the same time :).

Well done!! Great colors - I love something pretty and useful. I know there are lots of great books but one I like for basic good projects is Knitting Pretty. (My library has it.) There is a pattern for a "Company Dishcloth" that is a favorite dishcloth pattern - warning - the photo is not right next to the directions.

(pssssst, you can slip-stitch crochet two edges together, either right or wrong sides facing, but remind me to show you mattress stitch)

I love this... I love how it has no closure, just a slot. My knitting skills are pretty slim too so this would be a perfect project for me. ...maybe I'll "knook" it :)

Amy ... OMG! I need to try knooking! I just followed a link PlanetJune put in her twitter feed. I totally want to try that out. :)

It's difficult to imagine you not having patience, Dr. "FSC" Merlino. You could have named your Peacock sweater Patience. Steamrolling can be fun and informative, too. Your bound-off edge is beautiful. Your cell protector looks like an envelope-back pillow cover; very stylish. I crocheted my first cell cover so I could practice Starling skills in miniature.
Congratulations and on to #2!

Kelly ... Thank you for admiring my binding off. As hard as it may be to imagine, I have more than earned my reputation at home for being a steamroller ... a reckless-go-a-header ... a practitioner of willy-nilly. :) My crochet patience is a learned behavior that has been nurtured by the need to document said crocheting on my blog. I actually didn't realize that, though, until now when I was thinking about your comment. Having to document my process makes me more thoughtful and patient ... good to know.

Have you made a Starling handbag yet? I would love to see it.

This is super cute and the stripes are gorgeous! Leaving out the button and having a slot instead was a brilliant idea. :D

looks wonderful! not wonky at all. i used velcro to close when i made this exact same project, but i really like your idea (sewing velcro on by hand is HARD).

YAY congrats!! Hey, if you're looking for a nice project for the yarn in your last post, why not a knit block blanket? You could do each block with a different stitch, it's a great way to increase your repertoire. There are some people that even save all their swatches and use them for different purposes; cotton for dishcloths, same sized blocks for a blanket, etc. I hope you're having fun!!

Vivi ... Once I get the whole tension thing down, a swatch blanket sounds like a great idea! :)

What a sweet first knitting project--the colors are beautiful & feel like spring. I especially appreciate that an expert crafter like yourself is willing to show your steamrolled seams--gives me that much more confidence in showing you my lumpy little starling bag, which I love all the more for being my first crochet project. :)

Suzie ... Goodness me, I'm far from an expert. :) Have you shared your bag with me yet (sorry if I've just forgotten)? I'd love to see it!

Yay! I love it! Especially since it folds over it nicely for a cover. I made a felt cozy one but it kinda would fall out of it. Not completely user friendly.

It's always cool to be able to say "done" after a completed project too!

Hey FutureGirl, this is a wonderful project. I have just gotten a knifty knitter and this would be a perfect craft for that. I hear you on the tension, I got the loom so I wouldn't have to worry about it :)

BTW you just got a new follower!! Great blog!
