Mark Your Calendars

OK.  So I have a couple spare minutes to post and I can't find the camera cord to get my photos.  Is there an emoticon for gritting your teeth and making that awesome gutteral growl Marge Simpson makes?

( * ww * ) < Gggrrrr >

How's that?  See?  The "ww" are my bared teeth.

Ooooo or even this one ...

<@> wwww <@>

... except it's maybe a little too evil-looking.  Almost barracuda-y.  Maybe even hypnotizing.

Sidenote:  I'm trying to use more of these Asian style emoticons.  How's this for fascinating:

Two separate studies, in 2007 at Hokkaido University and in 2009 at Glasgow University, showed that Japanese and other East Asians read facial expressions by looking mainly at the eyes, and the researchers noted that this is reflected in East Asian emoticons which put emphasis on the eyes, compared to Western emoticons which emote mainly with the mouth.

I find that so interesting!  I think the eyes say more than the mouth.  Well, when the mouth isn't screaming obscenities.

When I get the photos off the camera, I'll tell you all about the awesome time I had at Craft Bar at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art last Thursday.  If you live in the area you should totally come to the next one on April 1st.  The details aren't up on their site yet, but I'm guessing it'll be 6-8 PM again.  And for $5 you get drinks, snacks, craft supplies, and crafty instruction.

Here's a teaser: my fun times involved two pointy sticks ... yes, the sound you just heard was the earth cracking in two. :)

nancymoo ... Oh, I no good yet. And probably won't be for a while. But it was fun to have someone to teach me in person. :)

Okay, weird. There must be something the pointy-stickers are putting in the West Coast water. I just learned to use them a couple of weeks ago.

Aimee ... It must be! I just saw on my friend Diane's blog that she's learning, too. What's in the water? :)

OMG!! how great is that? don't forget the website: http://www.knittinghelp.com/ i love it and it taught me how to knit "continential" style...yarn in the left hand...so much easier for some weird stitch combos or just so you don't have to drop the needle in your right hand...have fun! i am so proud of you!

katie the kid ... I do not have my yarn holding technique down yet. Maybe I'll try the continental style. Right now I look like a three-year-old holding the needles.

Oh. My. Goodness. Knitting!!

What will you make? I can't wait to see!

Amy Cox ... Nothing for a while. I can barely hold the needles while I swatch. My style involved using my mouth sometimes. That can't be right! :)

How cool about the emoticons! And it's great to see that one of the studies had been done at Glasgow University (a bit of patriotic excitement on my part...).

Rock on with the knitting! Can I also second katie the kid in mentioning continental style knitting. I was so frustrated with knitting until I learned continental - I've only been knitting since last autumn. Also, being a crochet badass will totally stand you in good stead - my crochet hooks have saved me from several knitting near-disasters. (^_^)

Can't wait to hear more about your knitting adventures!

Kate ... Yes, figuring out how to hold the yarn is key. I always pick it up and wrap it around my left hand instinctually and then make myself switch it over. I'll try Continental next time I pick up the sticks. :)

Just wanted you to know that you gave me and ol' Taco Bones at least an hour of entertainment on the Wikipedia last night :)

I think this is the greatest emoticon ever, btw (really, how often do you tell someone to have a waffle?):

Karen ... I know how much you guys love your wikipedia (balaclava, anyone?)! And, thank you, I'd love a waffle!

You should do another post after you get the hang of it and let everyone know which you like better. You will LOVE knitting, I think. It has many more patterns and stitches and you can really do a lot more with it than you can with crocheting.
Good luck!

Amanda ... I'm guessing you're not a crocheter. ;) I'm sure I'm going to love knitting. But I already know I'm not going to love one more than the other. They are totally different beasts. One is good for stretchy things and the other is good for shapes and stable fabric. One can't replace the other. Not in my heart. :)

I so didn't get the teeth things until I saw how they were set up in wikipedia. I feel so lame. You're right, the second one is a bit crazed and scary. My camera cord is permanently tethered to my computer, I'd never find it otherwise.
