Crochet Diagrams Are Going To Blind Me

I just started working on the crochet diagrams for the Starling.  OMG!  I think my eye balls are going to explode.  I might be easier to come over to your house and help you out when you have questions.

I guess the determining factors would be (1)  Do you have any cookies?  (2) Are they fresh baked?  Who am I kidding?  A bag of Chips Ahoy would get me over to your house for the afternoon.   I'll even vacuum if you let me eat the whole bag.

Just kidding.

... or am I?

Ha!
Once I get the diagrams done, I'm going to start doing my video crochet-a-long.  I've made title cards and Andrew recorded my theme song.

Oh, yes ... a theme song.

I can't wait to play it for you.  You're going to *love* it!

Wow! Isn't there some program that would do it for you? I have to admit, I prefer charts because I'm dyslexic and it's hard to read English crochet patterns... but I can imagine that would be huge hassle to do in illustrator. :|

Good gravy that looks...complex. I would definitely need a bag of cookies too! As it is, I'm already dreaming about the cupcake I've hidden that I"m going to eat with ice cream during the kids quiet time. What can I say...I'm 6 mo pregnant!

Melissa ... I don't know of any programs that do it for you. If there are any, I hope someone tells me about them. Honestly, I'm happy to have Illustrator. Can you imagine having to draw them by hand? Oh, man.

Brandy ... I wish I had a hidden cupcake. And ice cream. Mmmmmmmmmm Take a yummy bite and think of me. :)

Some mint creme Oreos just jumped into my cart yesterday when I was shopping with my 4 year old... Would that do?

Good luck, my eyes just kind of glaze over when I see those charts. I just figured out the knitting ones, now I guess I'll have to work on crochet.

Oh, and video crochet-a-long?! So cool! Maybe I can even get Rebecca up to speed before you start, she's 7. Do you think I should try?

Creating cunning crochet cuneiform causes cookie craving. I know that wasn't the causality you specified but it's better than ocular outburst.
I learned to read a simple knitting chart for wrist warmers and discovered it was not mysterious or difficult. I'm excited to figure out crochet diagramming. It's like decoding secret messages. And now I want my own theme song. You are inspirational.

You're hilarious. I bake so not many Chips Ahoy over here but I make a wicked chocolate chip.... I don't expect you to commute. But thanks for letting us know that you can be bribed and coerced with cookies. :-)

Michelle ... She might need some help with the fsc, but you could get her to do the million-and-one sc in the body of the purse. :)

Tails ... I'd *love* to pop in!

Kelly ... Surely, superior smiths-of-words spark similar sensations of inSpiration! OK. I cheated, but I'm cookie deprived ... that's my excuse. ;)

oh, this will be so great! and I can't wait to see the finished chart, in part for some inspiration on how to create one for a project I just finished -- I could NOT find a symbol for a fsc anywhere online. Did you make yours up or is that the conventional symbol?

Karin ... I made up the fsc symbol. I combined the open circle of the chain with the cross of the single crochet and made the little target-looking thing you see above.

I'm torn about the single crochet, and I wonder what you think: Japanese pattern books use an x and American pattern books use a +. I decided to go with the + because most of the people who come to my blog are American, but I sorta prefer the way the x looks. What do you think?
9/9/2009 9:12 AM

Personally, I don't like either of the symbols for sc; I like having a bar across the top like the dc and tc do. So the charts I draw out for myself never follow the conventions but I like 'em and they make sense to me. Sadly, I don't think I can convert the whole world to "Karin Crochet Symbols".

I say if you prefer the X, go with the X, esp since there are a lot more than just Americans checking out your stuff!

Is it weird that I never noticed the difference in the patterns until you mentioned it? I guess i just knew that the + and X were single crochet. Then again, I do prefer charts over written instructions most days - so much easier to see what you are making when you can SEE it

Marietta ... Not weird. Charts are better for most things, but there are maneuvers that charts just can't describe ... unfortunately. :)

I can't wait, I've already made one but I am pretty certain I am skipping in the wrong places and really want to check that I am doing it all right. It is an awesome pattern. Thanx

jessyz ... Unfortunately, the move has put this on hold, but it's still on my list of things to do. :) If you have any specific questions, you can email me!

I started this bag a few weeks ago but got distracted by other projects. When I came back to it I realised that after 2 rows I was not getting the right number of stitches! I feel like an idiot because so many people have made this and didn't seem to have a problem. I will not be defeated. Have started a blanket for a friends daughter, and will come back to the bag after that.

I have to say, I love charts. I think they're the idiots guide to any pattern and so are perfect for me :-) Will check back before I attempt again to see if you've completed it.
Your efforts are so GREATLY appreciated!! :-)

hilser ... Still no charts yet, BUT I've been posting video crochet-a-long videos the last 4 Wednesdays. They might help. http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/labels/startling%20crochet-a-long.aspx

I just found this web-side. This is very good I love it, most of the time hard to read crochet pattern only, to me.
