Giveaway - Artfire.com Shopping Spree

*** UPDATE: The random number generator picked Tina Holden as the winner!  Congratulations!  Thank you to everyone.  Your comments are so wonderful! ***

Sometimes everything sort of falls in line.  The world has dictated that this week be "crafty business" week around here ...

Recently I received a wonderful email from someone at Artfire.com.  As you might imagine, being the famous craft blogger (teehee) that I am, I get lots of marketing emails.  Most of them are terrible.  But the Artfire email was great.

I was impressed that the guy from Artfire.com was familiar with my blog, mentioned concrete and appropriate reasons why I and my readers might be interested in Artfire.com, and, most importantly, he asked for my honest opinion of their site, saying, "We do love any kind of feedback so if you have any to give please don’t hold back."

I'll forgive a lot of faults if you're willing to listen to what I think *and* take me seriously.  Artfire.com has developed many site features in response to user feedback.  Working in the web development field, this is a refreshing change.  In fact, let's hear it directly from a co-founder of Artfire.com :

Hello futuregirl readers, my name is Tony Ford and I am one of the co-founders of Artfire.com  John and I started building ArtFire as a venue that treats sellers like business partners and uses their feedback to guide the direction of site development.  We always seek feedback and ideas from both our community and first time visitors.  In fact, many of our most innovative features like Fusion Studios, our Rapid Cart, non-account checkout and our new coupon code program were generated from our Artisans suggestions.

We are very excited to work with futuregirl to get some great feedback on our site, your opinions are incredibly important to us.  If you have any other feedback you would like to give us beyond your blue sky scenario we invite you to visit us at www.artfire.com and tell us what you think, either in a comment here on futuregirl or by stopping by our Chatter Box forums.   I want to thank all of you who participate in this contest in advance and wish all of you the best of luck.

All too often a website, any kind of website, is developed to fulfill some non-technical big-wig's idea of what a website should be which usually involves animated logos, splash pages, ridiculous amounts of text explaining what the world wide web is *or* is a web nerd's wet dream involving EVERY widget, unsupported technology, and geegaw wrapped in an inscrutable user interface. Ha!  It takes balls to really listen to your users and incorporate their feedback into your site.

Artfire.com seems to be dedicated to creating a site that's built to accommodate the people who use it, and that's why I decided to host this giveaway.  Well, that, and they have generously offered to give one of my readers a $50 shopping spree on their site!  :)  Here are the details:

Artfire.com Shopping Spree
The amount is for a total purchase which includes shipping the total amount of the shopping cart will need to be $50 or less.  The prize can only be claimed during one shopping session and cannot be used multiple times so get as close to $50 as possible.  The winner will need to contact us directly for instructions on how to claim their prize.  This contest is void where prohibited by local laws.  Thanks you and Good Luck!

How To Enter
To be entered, leave a comment on this post between now and Friday, August 14th (until I turn off the comments) answering the following question:

In a perfect world, as a seller or buyer (or both) of handmade goods what is one function, feature or element a handmade marketplace could introduce to positively change the way you shop handmade.

Tell 'em what you really think!  And, if you've used Artfire.com as a seller or a buyer, let us know what your experience has been.

I know that some sites have this but it is really helpful... to have rss updates for your favorite category of goods or sellers that does not require you to log in every time you want to see an update.
RSS would likely encourage more purchases because you are reminded to visit the site for new products. If items were tagged well you could have rss links to things you are interested in buying.

I love a really good catagories layout and advanced search function. Those make it easy to find things without being overwhelmed, which can happen easily in the handmade world. Whether I know exactly what I'm looking for and only want to look at specific things, or I have no clue what I want and need to get ideas and hunt for awhile it's nice to have some sort of starting point.

I agree that a good advanced search function makes all the difference in the world. If I'm searching for something specific and get too many matches, I'm likely to just give up.

The advanced search function is really important. I also think that a good system for tagging that allows accurate categories would be extremely helpful.

I'm really interested in what Artfire is up to...

I'm going to go in a different direction from technology-based suggestions. I want more of a human feeling to my online shopping. I want to be able to connect to the seller - see their workspaces, learn about their lives, see their kids. When I shop at a crafts fair, personal connection to the seller helps, and sometimes prompts me to purchase a little more. Look at Amanda Soule and how successful she is - I would guess that her blog and connection to readers is a contributor to that.

This is WONDERFUL! :) As a verified seller's standpoint, I absolutely love Artfire for their wonderful community. Everyone is extremely helpful and the customer service is great! There are many unique gifts you can find there too, great and wonderful artists. As a buyer's standpoint, I enjoy the easily functions to navigate through the site. The search matches are excellent too.
Thanks:)

I am mostly a consumer/buyer (not seller) of handmade stuff. What I love most about the annual arts festival in my town is being able to talk about the creation of their art, and get to know them a bit too, since the seller is also the maker/creator. :) About craft fairs or shops that sell handmade things, I like again talking to people who make the stuff.. or who run the store..

Online is great because I can get stuff from people all over the world! But at the same time, it is important to still have that "warm and cozy" feeling. If the person has a comment/feedback/questions/whatever box... if they have a blog or other content that changes/gets updated.. if they have an about me section.. etc. those things make all the difference. :)

I LOVE Artfire! I think the way the site is going is a serious threat to Etsy ;) LOL It has all the things we have been asking for and more. The only thing I would ask for is a way to batch upload all images like we can do on 1000 Markets and find a way to batch the descriptions, etc. Some items may have the same descriptions as others.

I would also like to have a way to show people what items I have sold too.

Other than that I love Artfire :)

I have to agree that the "human feeling" is important to me both as a customer and a seller of handmade items.

I'd love to see a biog of the seller/maker/creator with information about -why- they do what they do. That story is as important to me as their product.

If I wanted to buy items that had no reason for being, other than to make money, I would head to my local department store.

I love to show off a handmade items and tell the story behind them. That story follows the item, in my opinion, even after it's been purchased and it certainly adds to its charm.

The site rendered well on my computer (I'm running Firefox) that's one thing it's got going for it. I'll have to play around some more but it was fairly straight forward to navigate. The only thing that I would change is to make it "cleaner". There is an awful lot going on at a time, every space has something in it and it's distracting to the eye. Take a look at the Future Girl blog, places to rest the eye.

I have been to artfire twice before and both times left because of the way it looked. I know that sounds harsh, but after visiting again today it still holds true for me. When you first open artfire and you've never been there it's very confusing. There are three menus and a ton of other stuff that I don't really get and maybe that's because I'm not a member and I don't know what's going on. But I also don't want to stay because of it. Long story short there is too much going on on the home page.
Also when you click on a product there tends to be a lot going on there too. There is shipping info below the item and also to the right of the item. Then a bio and everything right there. This may go against what everyone else is saying but if I look at an item and like it then I will search out their bio and other items. I don't need it to be there on every item I look at. It's just too much.
The things I like. The community seems to be good which is great for sellers and I really like the forge page. It's very straight forward with the item needed and the budget. Good Luck!

I mostly shop handmade when I'm looking for gifts. Something I think would be cool is to be able to make different lists of favorite items, kind of like how Amazon does. I would have a list of things to get for myself of course, Mom's list, Sister's list, etc. That way when a birthday sneaks up on me I just go to the handmade website, go to my lists, then pick something out of the items I've saved there.

As a seller, I agree with Deirdre - find a way to knock out the repetitive tasks of listing items (e.g. uploading photos, writing tags and descriptions, choosing keywords, setting pricing, etc.) and you're a step ahead of the rest.

I've never sold on Artfire, so what I like may already exist and all. Multiple payment methods, which were secure, would be nice- not everyone wants a paypal account. A shop that is very customizable while still not losing the community feel- I wish etsy stores were a bit more flexible, but also apperciate that I don't have to figure out how to browse a bazillion different layouts to poke around etsy.

I'm not a seller, only a buyer, and I'd love a better search function. I imagine at least 70% of people entering this amazing giveaway have said the exact same thing, but it's true! If you're looking for one specific thing, say a solid blue dress, and you type that into the search line, you get stripes, polka dots, plaid, white dresses with a tiny bit of blue lace...basically everything you don't want. You have to wade through all of these irrelevant items, just to look at the 10 or so listings that match what you really wanted. It's a pain. oh, completely off topic, but I made your beaded crochet bracelet (that I found on stumbleupon) and it's great!

I think it would be cool for a site like ArtFire to have some way to encourage first time sellers. I have always thought about selling but I get discouraged when I go to these sites and see all the work from fabulous artists that I could never hold a candle to! It would be cool if there was some sort of "You Can Do It Too!" campaign - maybe have interviews with successful sellers to show that they started small too.

This is awesome! ArtFire is a really well put-together site, which I would say is a quality I look for most when shopping and selling handmade things. When buying handmade things, I look for organization. When selling handmade, I look for simplicity and a way to commmunicate when I'm having trouble. This was a great idea ;)

I am an artfire user and I love it, for a perfect situation most of the things I would want are already there, though as a UK seller I would love to be able to input my prices in £ and have the $ amount change with the exchange rate. What artfire does with the currency conversion by location is fantastic but this would make it 100% perfect.

Unless of course they could figure out a way of auto writing descriptions but that would probably take the fun out of it all. All their promotional articles to help sellers are great.

I always feel like sites with their own search functions are missing out in one way: they don't use Google for their search functions. Amazon and Netflix are two examples of sites that I imagine have lost millions of dollars just because their search functions are not as robust as Google search would be (i.e. if you misspell, you're hosed. Amazon has recently improved this function, but before that, if you misspelled, you wouldn't find what you were looking for, they wouldn't suggest that you might mean something else, and Amazon would lose a sale. Dumb.)

I don't know what Google would charge (larger businesses need to contact the sales department to get pricing), but since--as a group--internet users are familiar and comfortable with the way Google operates, using a Google-sponsored search of the site is preferable. For example, on Artfire, if I misspell "crochet" as, say, "crohcet", it doesn't ask me "Do you mean 'crochet'?" It just gives me no results. This lack will of necessity cost Artfire money, because misspelling or just not knowing how to spell a word is common.

Artfire has to pay SOMEONE for their search function. They either pay someone in-house, or they pay an outside company. I wonder if it would actually be that much more expensive to use Google Custom Search for the Artfire site.

Gift certificates and advanced searching are great ideas that are being developed by Artfire. Also, I agree with many of the buyers comments on having a “human feeling” for an artist’s studio. As a seller this has prompted me to see if I can improve my introduction section of my studio. Thanks all for these comments.

After visiting the site for the first time, I'd have to say that I prefer a more open layout. When items and sidebars are crammed together, it's too difficult to read and makes me not want to use the site.
8/8/2009 2:45 PM

I like Artfire. I'm new to selling on it, but I appreciate the ability to show more than one photo of each item and to describe it well. I like the community on Artfire and the input ability. I'd like an artisan page to show my studio and more about me. I'm also Canadian, and I think it's absolutely *NECESSARY* to be able to sell in my country's currency. Having to exchange to American is difficult as it changes so often and therefore the price of my item isn't valid anymore in comparison to my own personal selling website. If a buyer were to compare, they might wonder why the price isn't the same on both. I am actually considering leaving Artfire for that reason.

I'd like to KNOW that the person cares about their product and that they're givin861g us their best work .. not something shoddily thrown together. I want to know that my money is supporting the handmade nation.

I also like "clean" looking, easy to navigate websites, not those filled with blinkies, and a million ads. I realize that ads are a necessary "evil" but too many is obnoxious and takes away from the shopping experience.

I also would like a display of sold items, and a way to see completed items when you do a search. It helps me figure out what is hot, what's selling. What i should be making, ha ha!

Also one thing i liked about ebay, (and there were not many), i used ink frog to make my item pages look pretty. I could choose the color and layout, for each thing i listed. That was nice.

What i like most about artfire, is that they care about and listen to the sellers. And they allow free speech on the forums. Very refreshing after the nazi attitude on the ebay and etsy forums, so thank you!

I like a section that has gift ideas by age. A pre-arranged list of possibilities for certain age groups or enthusiasts. I see these alot during mother's day but not much all year round. I see things like "If your mom likes to garden, she may like these too..." I get great ideas out of these and it helps me make purchases for age groups I am out of touch with (pre-teens, teens college kids).

I was hooked as a seller on Artfire after a long back and forth conversation with the owner, John, on Twitter. You just can't get anymore personal than that!

I love the look of my studio but agree that the home page could be cleaner and easier to navigate to capture buyers from the 1st time they come onto the site.

As a buyer, I'd love to see a 'long form' gift search - boxes to check for gender, age, price range, colors, likes - I mean I'd love it if I could say 'I'm looking for something for my Mom's birthday, she likes gardening and angels and I only have $50 to spend.' Then super bot could come back with a list of possibilities that I wouldn't have even thought of myself by trying to browse thru categories. It would probably mean a reeducation on tagging by the sellers, but it would sure be fun!

I think think for a seller that would be a really good tool to imcorporate, as we all want to know what items have been put into carts the most etc and beable to see first hand whats hot and whatsnot and incorporate that into future work.

I think that a great search engine is the most important factor. It needs to be easy to use and get results.

I sell/shop on Etsy and Artfire. I wish Artfire were set-up in a pull-down menu (like Etsy's). I HATE having to manually click "seller" everytime I'm looking for a shop.

The main thing I want as a buyer is easy navigation and search features. LOTS of categories and subcategories for general browsing. Lots of tag words allowed, to make searching for a specific item easier. I also would love a list of tag words that can be found within a specific sub-category, for those times when you can not think of what word the seller may have come up with to label their item with.

As a seller, I'd imagine the best thing would be low listing fees without expiration dates. However, an area that showcased individual shops would be valuable. Eg. a page listing the shops, with a brief summary of what they sell.

I am both a verified seller and shopper on Artfire, and as a whole, I love shopping here. I would have to agree with another post, however, about the front page. I tend to agree with a bit too much going on. I think a better idea for a front page would be a description about the site, BOLD mention of NO ACCT. REQUIRED to purchase (I think some people are so used to Etsy, and having to have an account, they don't sometimes pay attention to that fact).Second, I personally would rather see a seperate page for new listings, so as not to be so overwhelmed when first entering the site. But again, I DO love selling and shopping on Artfire.

I am an Artfire seller and buyer...what attracted me most to AF over the "other" online venues is the personal connection with the staff and the community. I can send an email to an AF staff member and receive a reply within a matter of hours, if not quicker. And, they have made several changes as mentioned to better suit the needs of the buyer and the seller; I haven't come across another venue that will do that. Basically, they listen and improve based on suggestions from the community and I know that the above mentioned issues will be taken into serious consideration and implemented, if possible.

As a handmade crafter just starting on in the online community and online selling - for me the most important thing would be to not loose touch with the human element of hand-made items. For many, the real appeal of buying handmade is not so much the better quality and uniqueness of the item - it is the ability to make a human connection with the maker - to learn the object's story, the maker's story. The object then becomes a valued item not for its price but for its story.

Your largest competitor will be etsy. They do a good job technically by making it easy to search and find like items and offer sellers easy and affordable methods to showcase their stores. The human element, however, gets lost just like on Ebay. You are still a seller.

I don't want to be just a seller. I want to be a hand-made crafter - a real person who has a story and whos objects have stories. If you find a good way to incorporate good technical tools with the human element, then you will have something special.

I'm a seller on Artfire as well as Etsy, and there are numerous improvements in the way Artfire is set up for sellers. I love the one-page system for new listings and the SEO optimisation is fantastic. Others here have mentioned a need for somewhere to see 'sold works' from an artist - I use the Gallery for this (the link is one every sellers main page), as well as to show works from way back in my creative past!

Improvements? As said before, the search could be improved and a simpler and cleaner front page would help, as it's rather busy. Don't change? The willingness of Artfire staff to listen to sellers and buyers!

I like the fact I can have multiple checkout companies for my customers. I like it that AF does not hang up on me when I call with a crazy idea or problem. I have had excellent customer service from them, even to the point of taking a message from a customer and forwarding it verbally to me.

I like the tutorials, "teaching weeks" and other promotional help they give all sellers which really helps one promote your studio the way YOU choose to. We are not lied to. If they dont know or cannot do something, we are told up front, usually in a very tactful if not detailed way ( Tony Ford likes big words cus he is a brainiac)

Rapid checkout really impressed my customers and I have had googlecheckout use with ease.

The changes are continuing and ongoing. I would like to see the trends category be more specific ( not just picking up words in the descriptions)

I dont mind the verbage,(in fact it helps with the SEO I think) but I think the magazines and featured artist, how tos and all that might be better suited on a different landing page. JMO

I agree about the misspelling in the searches, it needs to recognize variations of the words or ask did you mean?

Thanks.

First I'd like to say that ArtFire offers incredible tools to market our studios and has a variety of talented artisans to shop from! I love being part of this community!

Nonetheless, the question was a perfect world. In all reality, even with the most ideal search functions, customers have questions and concerns. Therefore, nothing beats a live chat! This is a world of IM, text tweet, and consumers are accustomed to clarity and instant answers or they move on! Online shoppers are used to the technology and I won't even go into the next generation of budding spenders' online habits.

Being able to go live has many benefits - including:

1. establishing a rapport between buyer & seller (they know you are real) and give them a glimpse of yourself,
2. ability to ask questions and get instant answers about shipping, custom orders, etc.,
3. consumer confidence in their purchase!

I am all for being accessible to my customers! Thanks for reading :)

This is the first time I have ever even heard of artfire.com. So I think they need more advertising on artsy blogs or other places that people can find them. Not corny ads but ones that maybe show some of the neat art available maybe they could make it a feature you can pay a little extra for and be featured on one of their ad's. I know a lot of women that if a coupon is offered on ad they will click it and look for something to buy just so they can use the coupon.

As a buyer and a seller, my ideal function would be able to buy and sell in my currency, the AUD. Also, I would love to be able to have my sales money sent straight into my acct with no extra costs. Being an non-US seller, Paypal is a hassle as I can't withdraw unless I reach a certain amount.

The ability to save complex searches, with an email functionality to send me updates as new items are added or match my search criteria would be FAB.

Also, I would REALLY love it if ArtFire, or other handmade sites, would put a cell phone accessible web site out there. Have you tried loading AF on your cell phone web? aaarrrggghhh

Finally, batch editing would be the bomb. Editing shipping profiles, applying them to multiple items at once, editing ALL tags, editing ALL descriptions, at once. That would be HEAVEN.

I like Artfire a lot so far. Let's just work on that traffic, shall we. :-)

What a generous offer and a great way to give feeback that you know will be read!! How wonderful!!

1) I would like to be able to see what items a seller has sold and for how much.

2) I would like to be able to make a wish list that I could share with family and friends wishing to buy me a gift.

3) I would like a very simple way to duplicate similar listings, instead of having to start from step one each time.

Thanks for listening!!

I'd like to see Studio categories actually have sections and a space for introduction.

Example:

RAINBOWS AND FLOWERS (category title)
You will find handmade jewelry in his section (limited space to maybe 100-200 words)

[pic#1] [pic#2] [pic#3] [pic#4]
[pic#1] [pic#2] [pic#3] [pic#4]
[pic#1] [pic#2] [pic#3] [pic#4]

UNICORN AND BUTTERFLIES (category title)
Fantasy digital painting. Commission only (limited space to maybe 100-200 words)

[pic#1] [pic#2] [pic#3] [pic#4]
[pic#1] [pic#2] [pic#3] [pic#4]
[pic#1] [pic#2] [pic#3] [pic#4]

I think that kind of things would make it easier for buyers to find AND understand what's going on and easier for the sellers to explain themself.

I love ArtFire and has made it my home :)
I have two running shops over there:

http://popnicute.artfire.com
popnicute - imaginative handcrafted jewelry

http://popnicutesupplies.artfire.com
popnicute supplies - quality jewelry supplies and cocoon beads original.

It may be old school, but I'm still a great believer in putting clear information in the space of one browser window - I would rather have roll-over menus than have to scroll down the page when I am looking at the left-hand menu, then roll-down to look at the right-hand menu. Scrolling irritates me :).

I am a buyer and a seller of handmade goods. I want a clean selling and shopping experience visually. Good page organization. Less clutter of a million different logos and attention-grabbing things everywhere. And I think that most sellers are so far from making a real profit that asking us to pay a monthly fee is crazy. I don't mind a percentage of my selling price going to the company. But I don't sell anywhere near enough to pay close to $100 a year just to list items. I might as well just give my stuff to friends and be done with it.

I'd like to think that I shop as much as I buy and the thing I'm most frustrated by is the inability to find what I'm looking for--to be able to whittle out the things that don't apply, include items that might be misspelled, and on and on. The market place has simply become so big that being able to find things (and as a seller, being found) has definitely risen to the top of my list of priorities.

I'm fairly new to Artfire but from what I've seen so far I love the direction they've taken and that fact that they really seem to to listen to both their buyers and sellers. When I go to a website. I like when they have search box. It makes it easier to find what you're looking for. I also think it's a good idea to have catalogs so the pages can load faster and it won't take forever to see the products. thanks for letting me put my two cents here!!

Fast loading pages on a site, a personal note about the site owner, I love the reasons behind a handmade item. Oh and a fair post and packing service. I think that occasionally an item can be underpriced, but the postage is more than it actually costs the seller. It seems unfair and often puts me off.

In a perfect world I would love to see the following added and/or changed to Artfire.

1. A simpler layout
2. A way to re-arrange images after they are loaded to the site.
3. A better search function to include but not limited to the following: a way to sort by color, price, gender, length.
4. A sold catagory in the individual's shop area
5. A buyer hotlist or something similar for buyers
6. A feedback section to leave comments or question about the product you are looking at without having to leave a complete message.
7. Shop catagories to have sub-catagories. For example: Necklaces - sub catagories: chokers, handwoven, silver, gold, etc. Or even to let the shops make their own sub-catagories.
8/10/2009 7:17 PM

I had to think about this for a little while. I am both a seller and a buyer of handmade goods online, there are some wonderful opportunities for artisans out there, but I came up with one thing that could really improve the experience for everyone. I would love to be able to embed a short video into my shop and/or listings. It could be a message to sellers, a tutorial or just a process video; but what a great way to really get a feel for the artist and what they do!

As a buyer and a seller on Etsy I really am upset with the "favorites" feature. I would love something like Amazon's wishlists on my handmade goods websites. I need to be able to sort/select/remove my favorite things easily in bulk. So often I save things for different reasons but have no way of searching my favs on Etsy (so I can't easily find that inspiration photo or item I wanted to buy). I like the idea of being able to have multiple wish lists with different titles. I would buy a lot more if I could find that listing I saved, or could find that seller who made felt bunnies.

I love Artfire! In fact, I love everything about it. The only drawback I see is that unless you're listing something new everyday, it's difficult to be seen. Given the complexity of most of my designs, that's a pretty tall order for me. Aside from that, on my wish list, would be the ability to add a blog to our studios. When I'm shopping, I would love to read more about the artist, what they're up to, and get a better sense of what goes into making their designs.
8/10/2009 11:51 PM

There are so many great ideas on this thread already - currency conversions, better searches, simpler layout. I am a seller, but I do also buy, and I would love to be able to search for items which ship internationally, and maybe even search for items in a particular country. I've lost count of the times I've searched for something, found the perfect thing...and then seen that it only ships to the U.S. Way to harsh my buzz, man! :-D

First of all I love your blog, were it not for Artfire's link I would not have found it (yet)

Artfire is great, most things I would wish are somewhere on their to-do list. What I would like most of all atm is the posibility to save half finished listings as drafts and maybe even plan ahead listings. Also, although the current frontpage lay-out is very pretty it is still a little too 'cute' for my taste.

In a perfect world, as a seller or buyer (or both) of handmade goods what is one function, feature or element a handmade marketplace could introduce to positively change the way you shop handmade....

That would be a 'virtual mirror', so one upload a photo of themselves, either a full pose or a face with shoulders, so one could see what a handmade item like an outfit, accessory, purse or jewelry (earrings, necklaces) would look like! There are mirrors like that for eyeglasses, make up etc...but none on any selling site. Artfire could be the FIRST!!

Wow.....Hi Mr. Jacobs,

as a buyer, yes please a little less clutter on the FP would be a less confusing to new buyers, but clear where I need to go to shop. The ads on the side margins in search pages, I don't even pay attention after a page or two, random search is great for the sellers but as a buyer, I find something take a peek and page back and loose the other items on that page as well, which is a little frustrating.

as a seller, I can see the traffic increasing daily and am very happy to have made a few sales, my biggest hope is the sales will keep coming along with increased views as well.

Thank you for all the hard work as a seller and thanks for an easy buying experience, I am never disappointed and have never had a problem.

I think that as a seller and as a buyer, it's important that the site I am using listens to feedback from it's members AFA what changes they'd like & to simply feel like they are a person, not just a number or a way for the developers to make money.

I think that ArtFire has already gone above & beyond in that regard. Not only have they come up with ways for sellers to set up their shops so that they each look unique, but they've given very valuable info on SEO that I would not have known otherwise. If we as sellers do well, then AF does well. Win, win for everyone, but something that not all selling venues do. Thanks ArtFire!

I can't really come up with anything more concrete. You guys seem to come up with all kinds of ways to improve the site that are way above & beyond anything I could think up.

I am an ArtFire seller and buyer and have been since last November. It has certainly come a long way since then!

My dream feature would be to have the ability to create a wish list that I could send to friends and family for holidays, birthdays, etc. Not only for gifts for me, but for my children, husband, etc. It would be an organized list with thumbnail pictures, prices, shipping costs, locations and a brief description. It would also serve as a great tool for organizing my hot list. =)

I'm still on a free account at the moment and I think it would be great if sellers could rearrange their items to freshen up the look of their page. I think this would be important for verified sellers too as items on the third page could be rotated back to page one to catch the eye of one page browsers.

I am truly enjoying my experience at Artfire. I was on a different high traffic selling site that I will no mention, and I really feel a part of the "team" on AF. Every issue or question I have had has been dealt with quickly and personally from an AF staffer. AF has Made me feel like I matter and not a nameless Buyer/seller. Plus the no account check out and FREE listings... I mean c'mon, does it get any better than that? Oh yes it does! Since on AF I get HUNDREDS more page views than my studios at other sites.
I heart Artfire.

The thing I would like to see on Artfire is a better way to search and brows items. I don't think this is user-friendly enough. I love browsing through images of craft items and Arfire doesn't give me this option. How about a screen that features random pictures from a given category? Just images on the page and nothing else.
Also the main page of Artfire is overloaded. It is really confusing for users. Keep only the most important things and a few featured images.

What a wonderful question! And some wonderful suggestions here--I totally agree with the idea of a wish list, multiple-category items, and customizable shop pages. My one complaint with Artfire is that it's not immediately obvious where to go to see the seller's other items--the little seller tabs (or page layout) need to be somehow clearer and more obvious. I think this would help buyers and thus help sellers, too.

Categories!! I rely heavily on categories when I'm searching 'like-minded' sites. The only other thing that I can think of is with the tags, unlike some sites- I'm hoping that one day tags will be a little more monitored so that things that could not possibly be further or more opposite of what I'm searching for , don't pop up in the results. I am a seller on Etsy and Artfire. Since so many buyers want the personal connection to the artist, I think it would be cool to have every new seller fill out an interview page when they register. There could be a long list of questions (ranging from how you became an artist to your favorite music to most embarassing moment or favorite posession...) and each seller chooses 5-7, for example, to fill out. Then each sellers' shop could have an "interview page" customized with just the questions they chose in Q&A format. The language could be very informal like a real conversation and there could be places to add pics of your workshop, kids, hobbies...or whatever feels important to you.
8/14/2009 3:31 PM

As an artist, I would love to know who is buying my art online.

I frequently fill out artist bios & run a blog so my customers can get to know *me*, but other than working art markets & craft shows, I have no clue who the lovely people are who buy my art online.

This is a completely selfish pleasure, of course, but I would love to see a little (optional) box where a buyer could introduce themselves. Is it a gift? Are they hanging my paintings in their child's room? I want to know!!! :)

I don't usually go to the home page, but follow a link from a blog post or something similar to get to a particular item or "studio." I like that some of the items have "similar featured item" links, but I imagine that the sellers aren't very excited about that feature since it takes people out of their studio.
8/14/2009 5:31 PM

A better way to promote sales from WITHIN Artfire. For example........

I would like to be able to create a message about a sales promotion and “broadcast” it to all of my previous customers and the system already knows to whom and where to send the message. Also, if customers could have a wishlist, we could market from that as well. As we’ve seen with the sticky cart, there are a lot of potential customers who put items in their cart and then don’t buy them. If they decide to remove an item from their cart or they go to leave the site after adding items to their cart a message could come up and ask if they would like to save the items to their wishlist. When creating a new listing, it would be nice if I could just click yes to send to all my followers on Twitter, or to post it on Facebook so I don’t have to keep doing the same things on all these sites or pass up the benefits they offer because I just don’t have the time.
