The Never Ending Project

Been working on the dragons.  Once I got the stabilizer off I realized I picked a crap red to outline the heads of the dragons.  It's way too dark.  See?

The one on the left is the red and the one on the right is the red oversewn with two strands of orange to brighten it up.

I need to work on my picking-floss-colors-for-colored-backgrounds skillz.  I tried really hard this time. Maybe I'm worried about the heads too much.  I'm just trying to avoid disasters of the she's being choked by an albino lobster kind.  Ha! (OMG! That *pink* face.  ugh.)

Here's a close up of the thread mixing.  I like the effect, but now that I'm almost done with the overstitching I wish I'd chosen the yellow.  Arghhhh.

And I'm not even going to mention the incredible disappearing monkey ... something must be done.

I swear I thought this would be a quick little project.  I thought I'd picked a simple design ... and I sorta did.  But then I blew it up WAY big ... and started obsessing about the colors ... and decided to do the scales the most complicated and stitchy way (which are looking awesome, if I do say so myself) ...

I've already eliminated about 50% of the details I wanted to keep.  I think I'm going to add some cloudy goodness between the dragons' heads because it's just too spare down there.

I'm totally loving this beast of a project, but I need to get it f.i.n.i.s.h.e.d!

I don't think I would have realized the red wasn't right if you hadn't already done the over-stitching ... the added orange makes a wonderful difference and I agree - the scales are going to be totally worth the effort. :)

You are right about adding the orange over the red, it makes a difference... I also like how it sort of pops off the felt more; there's more height to those stitches. I hope I'm making sense. :)

I totally agree with 3rdEyeMuse. I would not have noticed if you didn't compare the two (red vs. orange). But the orange looks rad. And the scales rock. Awesome! :D

this is so awesome!! i love the pair of dragon and yes the monkey seems like fading in the center. the mixing of two colors is very clever and i can imagine the dragons would be so lively if you could make its scales go 'tone' going darker up to its head! wow! that would be so 3D awesome!! :) i think filling up the monkeys' shirt could bring him out? and now i can imagine a fireball/pearl-like in the middle, dragon loves chasing it.. lol! now, you really make me want to start to embroider!! hehe

Est ... I don't know much about dragons. They like fireballs and pearls? Or fiery pearls? Or pearly fires? he he. I'm teasing about that last two. But I'm serious about dragons. We don't have any dragon folktales where I grew up. Just the treasure-loving dragon in the Lord of the Rings books.

love the dragons! :D the scales are looking really good. The space between the two heads does look empty, and while clouds would tie the whole thing together, like Est said a fireball type design would work well. a little bit of a contrast between the clouds I think would look nice

The orange overstitching is perfect. More complex and rich than yellow and sits better on the blue.
I don't know if it's always possible to "see" how colors will work ahead of time. Sometimes you just have to make your best guess/choice and when it's all thrown down it's as good as you thought or you get to make it even better.
Mr. Monkey just wants some textural action like the dragons have.
Est's flaming pearl suggestion would work symbolically and balance your design and not require too much more time.
It's a marvelous piece. I hope, when you're finished, you get to look at it often and that it makes you smile.

This will change the look of the embroidery and I almost hate to suggest it with how beautifully it is back-stitched... When I have problems similar to yours - things dissappearing or just not looking the way they really ought to have looked I take some floss (a little less than what I used to stitch the original) in the same color and do a whip-stitch over the stitches to raise the line. It gives the line an actual texture as well as a visual cue and it can make a huge difference. I pull the whip-stitch tight enough that the line doesn't whip back and forth - it stays pretty straight. If you hate it, it can easily be undone. Beautiful work!

Jessica R ... Thanks for the tip! I might not use it this time, but it's a good idea to keep in mind. :)
