The Beginning Of A New Life

OK, this post is so totally not what you're thinking, because, I totally know what you're thinking.  Stop thinking that.  Really.  Just stop.  ;)

What I'm talking about is an amazing quote from Brian Eno that can be heard on the Daniel Lanois album Here Is What Is.  The quote is:

I remember buying a little Indian sort of chest of drawers once and I was so intrigued by it, and the color of it, and I thought, this, if I let it be, could be the beginning of a new life for me.  If I followed the message of this little set of drawers, and built everything else around that, that would be a different life.

As batty as that quote sounds, I totally understand and relate to it.  Not only are there objects that inspire and strike a chord with you, but there are moments in your life that influence your direction much more than others.  Those objects and moments can be arbitrary and random.  Magical, even.

For me, one of those life-changing items is my flower purse.  I was able to use it a little in April when it was warm, but after that brief sunny spell, it's been raining almost every day, and now, pulling the flower purse back out, I feel ... I don't know ... different.  It's like the purse has an energy all it's own.

Just look at the grosgrain ribbon sunhat and adorable blanket stitched shoes it made me buy ...

Seriously, though ... I feel like the act of making this purse has altered the course of my life.  Maybe subtly and in ways that are unmeasurable at this time, but I can feel it's importance in the larger scheme of things.  This purse is a good thing.

I think the purse, the act of making the purse, is trying to reveal to me something about taking my time to do things right ... about choosing worthy goals  ... about how when you're following the right path, it doesn't seem like a heinous amount of labor, even if it is ... about how, if you listen, the world will tell you things you need to hear ... about the satisfaction I get from doing something well ... about the restorative power of constructing something with my own two hands ... about how good it feels to have matching accessories.

Ha!  I can't help but make jokes because I know how ridiculous it sounds to link life-changing epiphanies to a crocheted purse ...

... even if it's true ...

... and it is.

I totally get what you are saying. I was really amazed by your perseverance with the flower purse; you put a lot of time into figuring out how to line it and get it exactly the way you wanted it to be. I would think it would be an empowering experience to complete something as challenging as that.

Congrats on your epiphany and your cute new accessories! :)

Actually I know exactly what you're talking about. I sewed a purse once that I loved so much. It was like a dream purse. It's pretty worn and tattered now. I think it was so important to me just because I spent so much time on it and picking out the fabrics and everything.

I have never been one to spend hundreds of dollars on designer handbags -- but I have a new pattern I want to make, and my ideal fabric will probably run around $75-100, so I'm saving up. My husband think I'm insane for wanting to invest that much time and money into *making* something -- but he just doesn't get it. It's the whole process thing!

This was a great post. A good way to start my day! Thanks :)

Leslie ... The shoes are Aerosoles Hap Hazard - Dark Brown Suede (oh, wow! I just saw them in dark gray on the web). Get them a little tight. If they're too loose the sorta-heavy wedge heel pulls the shoe right off your foot.

I think I will have to read this post again tomorrow, just to make sure I get the full worth of it. I particularly like the bit about putting in the time and effort to give something that almost moral value.
Good on you.
Good luck with the move, by the way. Where are you going?

Okay, you're strange. But you make total sense. Does that make me strange, too?

I think I need a flower purse moment in my life, and soon.

I completely understand what you're talking about.

By the way, I meant to mention that the flower purse is really overwhelmingly cool in person. Somehow the photos on the blog never quite captured its awesomeness for me, but seeing it in person, it's absolutely gorgeous.

DavidCL ... Thank you! :) Strangely, not one person out-and-about has said anything about my purse. On the other hand, Jason just stopped me in the hall to ask me if I made it and oh'd and ah'd about it ... maybe I just haven't taken it out enough.

You think THAT sounds ridiculous? My life was changed by a television show. A CANCELLED television show.

Seriously... When I saw Firefly, all the existing episodes in one amazing week, it did change my life. So I'm much weirder than you.

So if you pour your heart and soul into it... and it makes you aspire to try harder while you are making it...if it gives a positive out come to that effort... if it makes you feel proud...

How could it Not Change Everything?

It it will look fantastic with those shoes.

Well, your post has just changed me - well, my opinion about the sun hat I just picked up at the supermarket, that is. I thought it was ok, 'til I saw your hat...

Those shoes are so totally awesome, and I'm not even a shoe person. And the hat? Perfect. I get what you mean, and applaud you for writing it down at the risk of sounding insane. :0)

The glimpses of you in that hat are just wonderful. I recently put a lot of time, more than I think I've ever dedicated before, to a dress. & only after the fact did I realize that I wasn't trying to learn anything (zippers, seams, pockets) in making it--I was comfortable with sewing clothes and was just trying to do it well. Funny how those transitions become real. Love the quote, as well as the most recent one. And good luck with all of your moving and unpacking!

Firefly lovers ... I've heard this from more than just you. Someday when I have free time I'll have to succumb. :)

UK lass in US ... You always make me laugh! :)

Michelle Z. ... I got the hat on sale at Macy's. It's coiled brown grosgrain ribbon and crochet lace. there's a bent up wire in the rim that helps it hold it's jaunty shape.

Michelle (greetingarts) ... Insane? You don't know the half of it. ;)

Ambika ... Well, I was having a hell of a time getting a good pic of the hat. It sure makes it look artsy to splice several so-so photos together. ;) I, too, love the transition from struggling to learn a skill to working to master a skill. It's a beautiful thing. If only more people could persevere through the struggling part. It's so totally worth it. :)

What awesomely cute shoes!! Is it fate for them to belong with the hat and purse?! Possibly!
