Icelandic Turtleneck Is A No Go

I've been holding on to THREE photoshoots' worth of bathroom-mirror photos that I took during the crocheting of my icelandic turtleneck (7/2008, 10/2008, and 12/2008).

I've wanted to do a series of posts to go through all the things I learned and mistakes I made ... and, you know, it's just not happening.

So here's the short version:

(1) The pattern is easy to follow and flattering once you adjust the armholes to be in the right place (aka take the slack out of the back).

(2) There will be no end to the jokes about it looking like chain mail ... if you live in my apartment.

(3) It's disappointing to make a piece of clothing over months and months and months just to find out you don't really like the style of the garment.

(4) I wouldn't trade the experience for anything because it's the only reason I took the time to learn foundation single crochet.

(5) I also feel like I learned a lot about the structure of a round-yoke top.

(6) I love Paton Grace yarn.  You can frog it a million times and it's still silky-smooth and shiny.

Goodness, I hate it when I've worked so hard on something & it isn't what I imagined! The wisecracks about the chain mail seem unnecessary! I guess we never stop learning...

If only you could try on the garment before you actually crochet it! I've definitely abandoned projects after getting tired of them, like scarves and shawls and afghans. Hmm, this makes me want to go back and finish them though, just to be less of a quitter.

It's why I enjoying making clothing for kids. They don't care. Just make it in a color they like and you are the queen! Sorry it didn't work about but there's always something else to work on, right?!

I thought a knitted garter stitch would be far more chainmail like, surely - that's what I chose for my son's halloween costume one year.

I'm sorry it's not what you hoped for. That's what puts me off making any tops for myself. I think of all the tops that looked great on a hanger, then awful on me. Then I wonder how that would feel after spending months making it. And my husband is always waiting with a wisecrack at my expense...

Bummer! I want to make a sweater so badly, but I am scared of that exact thing! What if I spend all this time and then I don't like it?! I hope I will have your peaceful, "learning experience" attitude if it happens! :)
