Softies That *I* Love ... And A Giveaway!

I get so excited every time the "sock and glove" rep (which is what I call her in my head ... her name is Melissa ... hi, Melissa!) emails me offering a book to review.  She sends me the best stuff. :)

This time I got a copy of Softies Only a Mother Could Love.  The title implies that these are ugly softies, but, while they aren't your traditional teddy bears, they are an adorable lot.  Maybe I'm just acclimated to our indie and Japanese-inspired style.

I decided to make the owl designed by Abby who writes While She Naps.  Hers is fabric, but I decided to use a bunch of the felt that's been languishing in my stash.  I didn't enlarge the pattern, as suggested by the book; I just used the book-sized pattern pieces.  I decided to "cheat" and use the sewing machine.  WOW!  I whipped this up in record time.  Seriously.  I told Andrew that I was going to go make something and came back about 45 minutes later with the owl and he said, "You just made that?!"

My favorite bit is the fussy cut tummy.  I've been wanting to fussy cut something since the first time I saw someone mention fussy cutting.  Plus, if you can't tell, it's super fun to type and say fussy cut.  Fussy cut!

The book is fun and there are several projects I'd love to make in it.  The mad dog (seen on the cover below) comes to mind.  Made large, it would be a great couch pillow.

I've been hoarding the green felt and this brown textured felt for years.  It felt great to dig them out and actually cut into them.  Yay for stash busting!

My only negative comment about the book is that the tag line is "Lovable Friends for You to Sew, Knit, or Crochet " and there is only one knit project and ZERO crochet projects.  I initially decided I would make a crochet project from the book because the owl was so ... obvious.  But I looked through the book three whole times before I realized that there weren't any crochet projects.  The strangest part ... they have crochet instructions in the book.  As long as you know you're getting a sewing book, though, it's all good.

GIVEAWAY!

And, because I've got super blog mojo lately, they are offering to send a copy to one of my readers!  Yay for giveaways!

Leave a comment on this post telling me about one of your childhood stuffed animals and you would have a chance to win a copy of Softies Only a Mother Could Love.  Open to residents of USA only.

I will stop accepting comments at midnight on Sunday, February 8th.  To find out what time that is where you live, choose your time zone next to the heading "Select place to convert to" on this page at The World Clock.

I'll announce the winner on Monday, February 9nd.

I had a stuffed chipmunk that I promptly named "Simon" after my favorite of the three on the cartoon "Alvin & the Chipmunks." Of course, I liked the studious know-it-all!

I've never made a softie, but I keep meaning to pick up a book about it. This would be a great way to start!

When I was in grade school I had to go for some minor back surgery. At the time, our neighbors had a big black lab named Greta who I absolutely loved. We didn't have a dog because my parents just didn't have the time for one. Our neighbors wound up visiting me in the hospital and giving me a stuffed black lab puppy, posed sitting with a little black leather nose. I still have her. Naturally, I named her Greta and I would just sit with her in bed and stroke her leather nose. She's still my favorite. I think just because she was fun to cuddle and the thought my neighbors put into their gift just made her really special.

I had to get my tonsils taken out when I was about 6 and people gave me random stuffed animals to make me feel better. My cousin Bryan and I were playmates when we were younger but he was the troublemaker and whenever I got in trouble, I'd just blame him and I'd be off playing again. This kind of made me totally hate me sometimes/a lot of times. But right before my surgery, he gave me one of his favorite stuffed animals, a polar bear with red and green sateen paws. I loved the stuffed animal so much and I really appreciated what Bryan did for me! I named the polar bear snowy and I still have him now :]

My mom made me a stuffed elephant when I was born 33 years ago. It is made of a light denim material with Raggety Anne and Andy on it. She had felt eyes, but they fell off years ago and I drew in eyes with a marker when I was younger. There is also a pocket sewn on the front (like a pouch) where I used to keep tissues, little treasures and hairties. I still have "Ellie" and have brought her with me everywhere, from overnight camp to studying abroad in England. She now lives on my chair in my bedroom along with a teddy bear that my husband gave me before we were married. I will pass Ellie along to my children (when I have them).

Whoa! Love the fussy cut tummy!

My best stuffie when I was little was this little puppy that was in the shape of a sort of rounded off triangle with floppy ears. I suppose the ears made him a puppy. He had a tiny pink felt tongue. I used to rub my nose on that tongue. He was awesome.

My favorite stuffed toy was a pink rabbit puppet that I named Fubby (I really wish I knew why I chose that name but I've never figured it out!). Fubby had several brother and sister rabbit puppets in different colors, but he was the only one who got dragged around the neighborhood and ended up threadbare and patched. I still have him (and all his siblings) hiding in a suitcase in my closet with all my other childhood stuffed animals. My husband has yet to ask what's in that suitcase - he'd probably think I was silly for keeping so many stuffed animals but I just can't bear to part with them!

I had a bunch of these things called Popples when I was growing up. I bet someone else will remember them- they were these stuffed animals that had a pouch you could tuck them into then 'pop' them out into furry creatures. There was a cartoon I think also. Anyway- I had 8 or 9 of those things, I loved them to pieces!

Oh my goodness, that owl is adorable!

I've actually been meaning to blog about a couple of my childhood animals, most notably Sugar Bear, because of the current felt softie craze. He is about 24" high, and he's flat. I need to get the full story of him from my mom...for some reason I have it in my mind that my uncle made him for me! He currently sits on my youngest son's bed.

You know what, I'm going to take him out for a photo shoot today. Thanks for the kick in the seat!

One of my earliest memories ever is my third birthday party. I remember a particularly huge gift. It turned out to be a large stuffed bear. His name is Big Bear; he was my favorite, and became an instant leader in the community of stuffed animals and dolls. I still have him, and now my 3yo plays with him. (And yes, Big Bear went to college with me.)

My favorite stuffed animal as a child was a small white and blue dog named Rover. He was a Christmas gift from my Dad when I was 4 years old. My dad told me this crazy story about shopping for Rover and that he had no choice to get him for me because he had jumped into his shopping cart at Gimbels. I promptly busted my Dad for his crazy story, because even at 4, I knew that Gimbels didn't have shopping carts. LOL. Anyhow, Rover became my favorite . . . and I still have him today! He's threadbare and has had a few ear and nose reattachment surgeries, but he's still my fave!

Oh I'd love to win that book! My favorite stuffed animal from childhood was actually a doll. It was also the first thing that I had ever won. I was probably 7 or 8 years old and put my name into a drawing at the dentist office for a doll that was handmade by someone locally. I won it, and I loved that doll. It is still around somewhere, probably in my nana's basement. I should go pick her up. : )

My older brother had a Chinese knock off of Snoopy named Henry. Every school day, when he would tromp off to school, I would stand at the front door and watch him leave. As soon as he disappeared around the bend, I would raid his room for Henry and spend the rest of the day with *my* stuffed animal. I'm not sure I loved the stuffed animal as much as I coveted his things.

My favorite childhood toy was a huge Raggedy Ann doll. She was well loved, and therefore had to be repaired many times. My mother is less than a stellar seamstress, so, she has lots of fault lines running all over her body :D

I still have her now. She traveled from apartment to apartment with me when I was young. And when I moved out she came along. I also still have a Snoopy, Rainbow Bright and a stuffed stork that family and my parents friends signed when I was born. I am sentimental ;D

My favorite softie was my Holly Hobbie doll. I remember being very "into" Holly Hobbie. It was the late 70s. My mom even made me a patchwork dress and bonnet to wear. I also remember the Christmas my grandmother made my sister and I Raggedy Ann dolls. We each received a huge doll (probably 36") and a smaller doll. I was unhappy because Raggedy Ann was my sister's favorite and, of course, I liked Holly Hobbie. I remember being chastised by my mother for being unapppreciative. At that point I didn't realize all of the love, time and work that goes into a handmade gift...all I knew was that my sister just got her favorite doll and I had to settle with the same thing. Now I wish I still had those Raggedy Ann dolls that my "Memaw" made for us. I think I will do some digging in my Mom's attic and see if they can be found.

That owl is so cute! Looks like a really great book-thanks for the give away! I remember when I was a kid, my dad moved to Chicago after my parents divorced (we lived in Virginia). He visited pretty often, and on one of his first trips he gave me a little honey bear. It was teeny and cute and I love that thing. I cans till picture my dad giving it to me in his fancy suit (he was an Air Traffic Controller and had to wear a suit to fly with the pilots-pre-9/11) I think it's the only stuffed animal I have kept from when I was young. It sounds strange because rereading this, it seems sad, but I really feel like it is more of a testament to my parents that they made the seperation as painless as possible, and my relationships didn't suffer. For this reason, the bear is a happy memory instead of a sad one!

OH my, that owl is WAY too cute! Only 45 minutes?? I think even I might be able to find the time for that ;)

The childhood stuffed animal that I am currently on about is a SUPER soft bunny puppet. My family and I went to the Scandinavian Festival in Oregon every year, and there was a woman there that hand-made these really awesome animal puppets. They were very expensive, and I had to beg, and "show that I am responsible" for about 6 years before my grandmother bought me a sweet light tan colored bunny, with pale blue calico lining the ears. I was about 10yrs old by then, and way past the puppet phase, but this bunny has been one of my most beloved treasures =]

My bunny puppet (who is actually named Bunny...my other animals had more creative names, I promise!) is now my 6yo daughter's favorite toy. She knows how special it is to me, and it has become very special to her. She has even cried over it, when she thought Bunny had gone missing (my dd is NOT an emotional girl in general!). Every night, she hops up into my lap, and we play with the bunny puppet that I spent the majority of my childhood wishing for =]

I still have my stuffed teddy bear, Pinky, that I've had since I was born. She used to be bright, bright pink with a blue ribbon, but has long since faded to pale pink with a white ribbon. I dragged her around everywhere with me. My mom had to wash her so many times, she was afraid that one day she would just fall apart, but she never did. I have quite a few more - they're very hard to part with - and I've had a bit of practice making stuffed animals - I made two stuffed moles for an extra credit project once. Anyway, the book looks awesome, and I'd love to make some more cute softies.

In 6th grade I had a home ec class and one of the sewing projects was to make a stuffed animal. I made a puppy dog, and got another dog pattern to make on my own. That second dog became my best friend for MANY years to come... all sewn by hand, he has rusty colored fur and I named him Rufus. Sometimes I would give him a "bath" by spraying him with some scented beauty product, LOL. I *still* have him at the bottom of my closet somewhere, but he is very fragile these days, with small seam holes and a frayed tag that used to say "made by _____" with my name handwritten on it, but now it's smudged off.

I had a rolly-polly little monkey doll named Melissa. She wore a white cotton eyelet dress with spaghetti straps made from old white lacy seam binding by my mom. She's stored away for now until we move into our house. My other favorite doll was made from one of those fabric panels you cut out and sew together and stuff that were big in the early 80's. Her name was Skunkette- she was a skunk (suprise, huh?) that held a pink daisy. I carried her around by her foot for so many years that the stuffing wouldn't go back in any more and her foot was flat. She's stored with the monkey right now. There was also this stuffed doll with yellow yarn hair and a yellow dress, whose name was Yellowy... I know, I was a naming genius. ;) And fussy cutting is lots of fun.

When I was three years old, my dad gave me an old, probably from the fifties, rust colored, bean bag teddy bear, a little bit bigger than the beanie babies of today, smaller than a traditional teddy bear. He's the loneliest looking little bear, no mouth, wide, down turned eyes, and since he's a bean bag, when you sit him down, he looks very deflated. His claim to fame is that you can shake all the beans out of his head. (I used to tell everyone this).

When my dad gave him to me, I puked on him. Obviously a sign of love, since he still sits next to my bed today. My teddy bear. His name is Guy.

When my daughter was 8 or 9 months old, I bought her a stuffed cow that was so cute I couldn't resist. I bought it to replace the bear given to her by my evil sister-in-law and which was quickly becoming her favorite toy (why yes, I AM a petty bitch!). It was love at first sight and MooMoo never leaves her side. He (yes, he's a boy AND he gives milk) even accompanies her to Kindergarten every day along with his daughter, Baby MooMoo (who is a tiny beanie-type cow). The MooMoos are part of our family and I'm sure they will accompany my daughter to college someday.

Oh wait. This was supposed to be MY favorite stuffed toy. Let's see. . . When I was 8 or 9, my mom, who was a Yarn Goddess, crocheted a 6-foot purple alligator for me just because I asked for it. It was the 70's and it wasn't called Amigurumi back then. It was awesome and I still have it somewhere. I recently crocheted a long snake for my son for the same reason: he really wanted one. I made it out of wool and felted it and it's pretty amazing if I do say so myself. It made me feel like I was channeling my mother's spirit.

We still have them - my husband was a little confused when I kept her on the bed, but there's no getting rid of my friend! He has since accepted it... :)

I received a dog from my brother when I was born. He's 10 years older than I am and had received it when he was born as a gift. It was a hound dog and had big floppy ears and the saddest eyes. I called him droopy dog. I don't know what my brother called him. I kept him until I was about 10 or 11 and then gave it to my little brother. I think he was accidentally packed up in a bag that got donated to a family in Mexico. It's okay though because I bet whoever has him loves him. My little brother didn't find him all that great.

My favorite childhood stuffed animal was a handmade knit zebra that an aunt bought at a church craft bazaar. I think i loved it so much because it was handmade. It was stuffed with pantyhose and i pulled the panyhose out of one of the legs through the knit. I then used 'kleenex' to restuff the leg. My Mom just brought me the zebra in Dec. and i plan on fixing his poor leg. His name is Toto after the dog in the Wizard of Oz. I carried this little guy everywhere!

My favorite stuffed animal, and I had (and still have) many, was a panda. He could sit and lie down because his legs were able to bend at the hip. My father took me to the local toy store before Christmas (I was about 5 or 6 years old) to walk through and find out what I wanted Santa to bring. Well, it was Panda! I still love him and treasure him today. Ah, those days of childhood wonder...

At about age 7 my mom got so fed up with me NOT cleaning up my room that she threatened to, and then DID take all my toys away. The only thing I remember being upset about losing was a stuffed parrot. Needless to say, her plan backfired and my toys were returned the next day. I had a lot of stuffed friends growing up, as most kids do, but that stuffed parrot is one of the few that I actually saved and would never EVER get rid of.

I have loved cats since I can remember, so most of my stuffed animals were cats of some sort. My favorite was a stuffed cat with blue glass eyes and a funky tail kinda like a squirrel’s that was dressed in a blue gingham housedress with lace trim. It was about a foot tall and had moveable legs (but I think the arms were stationary). It was a little beat up when I got it, and my mom doesn’t remember who/where it’s from. I named it Tabitha after Beatrix Potter’s Miss Tabitha Twitchet.

I brought that dog with me on the plane and to our new home . We had great adventures in Germany and that dog went everywhere with me . we were there for 4 years . When we moved back to the states we had our things shipped home and sadly my dog was not in any of the boxes . It got left behind. I never forgot that dog.

When I was little, I don't remember exactly how old but younger than 7, my mom went away to a training program and I stayed with my grandma in Picayune, Mississippi. I missed my mom terribly and so my grandma sewed me a Gwendolyn doll (my mom's name) with an embroidered face and yellow yarn hair. As an older woman of about 20 I left the doll in storage at my stepdad's house who, having met us later in life, didn't know the story of my Gwendolyn doll and gave it to Goodwill after I moved out of the house. It broke my heart. About 6 years ago my mom and stepmom made me a new Gwendolyn doll and while she's not exactly the same as the old one I still love her to bits.

First, I have to say that your blog as really inspired me to sew, hand-sew and embroider more. And yes, I've read EVERY SINGLE POST, you've ever made, right from the beginning! And now my lovely animal story <3

My great-grandmother was a beautiful woman, and I was lucky enough to spend time with her until I was 11 years old. She made me one of my favourite stuffed animals, a cute little blue bunny {on top of all the clothes she made me too}. That bunny is one of my cherished plushies, the fabric is worn through all over her little body, both eyes are missing and the stitches are all bursting to come loose, even after the many childhood repairs I did on her myself. She has been washed so many times that her stuffing is a little on the firm and lumpy side. But she still sits on my bedside table, welcoming me and my husband to our comfy bed every night. I always think that I should re-sew her, re-stuff her and give her new eyes, instead of the miss-matched stitches that are supposed to look like satin-circles; But I couldn't do that, knowing that my Gigi had put so much love into her. Plus, her lumpy little body is still just as cuddly! My husband once mentioned that we should "give her away," and I laughed and told him that if my Bunny was going, his handmade elephant from his Oma in Holland was going too. I think I won that argument.

My favorite stuffed animal, was a white teddy bear, with a red velvet heart on his tummy, and a squeaker inside. My best friend from age 4 (we're still bff's, almost 17 years later!) gave it to my the week my sister died at birth. I held onto the teddy bear for dear life, and dubbed him "squeeky bear". When I was in kindergarden, I was walking home from school with my mom, and saw an accident. A little girl in our neighborhood, got hit by a car, and we stopped to help. I gave the little girl my teddy bear, and told her that he would comfort her until she was better. Never saw or heard from squeeky bear again. Until about 5-6 years later. I don't remember how, but somehow the little girl found me and gave me squeeky bear back. I still have him with my handmade stuffies in my room.

My favorite stuffed toy as a child was a purchased plush monkey with a plastic face that I named Judy. When I played beauty pageant with her she was embellished with paper towel for hair and her ears were pierced to accomodate trash bag tie earrings.

I was always envious of the stuffed sharks that my Mom made for my brother though, especially the tiger shark that was made out tiger print fabric. Makes me wish I had been more into sewing when my son was little and I could have made one for me to, uh, him, to play with.

I had and still have Bunny. In retrospect I think that Bunny was in fact a dog, but he has become a bunny over the years. In pictures of me as a baby he is very fluffy and yellow, now he is sort of brown and has had many operations over the years- he doesn't have his original nose, my mom embroidered on a new one which I suspect is much more bunny-like than his original. He also originally had silky material on the insides of his ears and my mom had to give him a transplant with some more user friendly flannel. Because of Bunny, my favorite story as a little kid was "The Velveteen Rabbit" and my mom used to tell me that like the rabbit in the story, I had made Bunny real.

My first Christmas, I received a plethora of stuffed animals and softies, but for some reason an unassuming brown plush bear from a family friend caught my attention. From that point on, Old Ted (as he later became known) and I were BFF's.

Old Ted went everywhere I did during my early years. He was my bedtime companion, and he was my couch buddy, and it wasn't long before the amount of love he was receiving began to take a physical toll on the little guy. No longer a plush, fluffy thing, he began losing hair on his belly (poor guy, how embarrassing!) and lost his ability to sit up on his own accord due to lost stuffing due to many (I'm sure distressing) trips through the washer and dryer.

One day my parents, who obviously had the poor bears best interests at heart and were hoping to alleviate some of his suffering, decided to buy me a new bear. This "replacement" was cute and cuddly, but apparently just didn't meet my standards. He was named "New Ted," and Old Ted officially became, well, "Old Ted" (stating the obvious, much?)

So Old Ted continued with me on the journey's of life. He rode on trains, he met Mickey Mouse, he went through a confusing phase where I made him wear a pink dress... He was even lucky enough to partake in no less than six family vacations to the island of Cyprus, and even visited the Tombs of the Kings.

He was nothing if not well traveled!

Somewhere along the way he accumulated some blue shorts from one of my dolls (lucky guy!) and a tee-shirt with the message "I'm your bedtime bear." This was the outfit he remained in.

As I grew out of the soft toy phase, Old Ted still made trips with me - albiet a little more subtly. He's lived in every dorm room, apartment, and house that I ever have. Nowadays he resides in my craft room, propped up on a shelf because he can't hold himself up. There's not a day that I don't look at him and smile. He's old, he's balding, his clothes don't fit, and his eyes are scratched up. He's TRULY a softie only a mother could love and love him I do.

I’ve posted photos of Old Ted on my blog at www.readysetcraft.blogspot.com : )

Your blog is so much fun to read.

I have two stuffed animals left from the zillions I had as a kid. One is my tattered Shop Rite teddy bear. He has all kinds of interesting wounds. His shoulder is torn, the material all worn and loved away. As a kid, I decided to treat this injury. I used green permanent marker as medicine, and I crocheted (yes, really crocheted!) a patch to fill in the space. He's so decrepit but I still love him!
My other stuffie from childhood is a funky green turtle with a long neck. She's Italian and her name is Luigina, named after my Italian grandmother. Luigina's eyes are embroidered, her shell is a beautiful floral fabric.

The most unique stuffed animal I own (yes I still own him!) was a hand-made gift from one of our close family friends. My parents and quite a few of their friends were hippies, very much into working the land and making things for themselves. As a gift when I was born, our friend Tom made me a leather and fleece teddy bear. It is all hand-sewn, from medium weight sheep skin with brown button eyes. The bear is all woolly, except for the stomach which is made from thick, smooth, soft leather.

Woolly Bear not only survived my childhood, but so far has made it through quite a few years of my adult hood largely unscathed. He is a testament to good workmanship and materials as well as design. While I've had many other favorite toys, he now resonates with me even more than when I was a child.

Like many others, especially during our economic ups and downs, I am at a place in my life where I am exploring my place in the world, deciding what my marks will be, and trying to do so in a way that lets me make good use of my resources. The concept of a gift that will use odds and ends of leftover materials and be durable enough to survive a lifetime is something I admire and hope to emulate.

Who knew a pair of old brown socks, with a carefully embroidered corduroy jacket would provided me with companionship and comfort for the current 27 years of my life. Unfortunately, he can't sleep with me anymore, for fear his long, threadbare limbs will disintegrate in bed - but we still like to tell each other secrets.
