Sweater Fail Train

I can't stop the "trying to make a sweater" train, so I'm just going with it ... doomed or no.  I was all ready to give up, but then Ellen B. suggested crocheting in the back loops only.

Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in ...

I just *had* to try it out.

I tried a back-and-forth single crochet in just the back loops.  I love the way it looks, especially the horizontal line between the rows.

And I also experimented with ways to increase stitches.  I kinda like doing a sc in the back loop and then another in the front loop of the same stitch.  The stitches lay pretty flat.

But I don't like that the increases are so obvious and sorta mar the monotony of the single crochet stitches.  Plus, as you can see from the arrows (which I first typed as "errors" ... ha!), I didn't really plan out where I was making the increases, so they are sorta spiraling out from the collar, which looks weird.

Back to the drawing board.

p.s.  Yes, indeed, knitting would be the way to go ... but I'm not a knitter ... yet.

just a few thoughts--

first, i think you're being overly critical. blocking will take away a lot of the things you think "pop out" at you, as will crocheting several more rows of the pattern (i usually make the mistake of thinking something looks bad b/c i've only done a few rows. sometimes i'm right, sometimes not).

also, it looks like you're using a heavier cotton to make this. i know you're still on your buying-halt, but once you're not, check out your local yarn shop. a finer weight cotton (think sock yarn weight) or wool blend will make soft stitches and you probably won't see those things as much. believe it or not, you can actually see increases in knitting too, if you know what to look for (the general population does not notice these things!)

don't give up yet! crocheted sweaters are pretty too!

One more trick...If you were using double crochet stitches to crochet this sweater, here's what you do at the increase points to create a pattern:
dc 2 (increase), ch 1, dc 1, ch l, dc 2 (increase). This way, you'll have chain spaces around one dc stitch, increasing either side of the ch 1 space. This creates a rather nice design at the sleeve increase points and sets off that lone dc "spine".

Crochet sweaters ARE possible. I have a few. If you want a pattern I can point you in the direction of some really good ones. None are mine, so I'm not saying this so that I can point at me. :) And I agree with Linda. A lot of little things that you notice in the process of making it aren't seen once washed and blocked and worn. After all the little black arrows can't follow you wherever you go. :)

linda p ... Oh, I won't give up! :) Thanks for reminding me to give it a couple more rows before I make a decision about how something looks.

Ellen B ... I'm totally going to swatch that and see how it looks. Thanks for the idea. :)

Stacey ... I'd love any sweater links you have. I wouldn't have minded if they were yours. :) It's good to know that the little black arrows can't follow me around, they'd seem like just *too much* with the little black cloud I seem to have around my head lately. ;)

I work in a drug rehab. where almost everyone smokes. I am soon to try to quit smoking. I need some crafts to keep my hands busy. Any suggestions?

Gena ... Crochet or embroidery would be great. Or cross stitch. The easiest would be to go to the craft store and pick up a little cross stitch kit that comes with everything you need.

i really like the way the lines show in the back loops, that would be very pretty around the yoke. i also like the idea from ellen b, i love that little detail in the yoke leading to the sleeves, it's very quaint and feminine. are you set on making your own design? keep up the good work, we're all here for support!

Ha, I was going to suggest working only in one loop too ! (I usually crochet in the front loop only for garments). You might get more fabric in the end for the same amount of yarn, and it drapes better too :-)

sylvchezplum ... Yep. The drape is nice. I didn't think about the yarn going further, but that makes total sense!
