New York Weekend, Part 1

We went to New York last-last weekend (aka the weekend before this last one) for the first time since we got rid of the car.  Let me tell you, I love taking the train!  There's lots of leg room, big comfy seats, and crochet-time galore.  If it wasn't so expensive I'd take the train up every weekend just for the relaxing craft-time.

Last time we were in New York I passed up a Japanese crochet book I really wanted because I was being frugal.  Then I ended up spending more buying it from Etsy because I just couldn't wait any longer.  Well, thank goodness I did because they didn't have a copy of it in the store ... or it's sister-book.  Last time I was there they had multiple copies of each one.  They must be super popular.

So this time I decided that I'd let myself indulge in one Japanese craft book.  As I looked through Every. Single. Craft. Book. in the craft section, I mentally noted all the maybe-this-ones in my head.  But when I got to this crochet book (ISBN 9784579111138)I knew I HAD to have it.  It's from 2006 and I've seen it a lot.  My heart skips a beat every time I see the bag on the front and it's multicolored doppelganger on the back.

Most of the projects in the book are made from joining motifs and I'm very interested in that right now.  I'd love to get a feel for the mechanics of joining motifs and creating 3-D shapes from them.  There are tons of motifs in my books that I'd love to turn into purses.

I haven't had a chance to start making anything yet, but I'll show you as soon as I do.  Most of the book is actual projects, but there are four pages of motifs.  Aren't they just gorgeous?

Hello Alice,

I would love to buy this book. I will search it in France, but, to help me, can you give the ISBN number of this little wonderful thing ? Great thank you.

Posts like this are the reason why you must come over one day and teach me how to crochet. I'll make coffee, I'll bake whatever your heart desires... I just gotta be able to do stuff like this!

So gorgeous! I can't wait until the day that I have time to make delicate decorative things like those, but until then I am almost completely satisfied just staring at the gorgeous pictures of them!

Wow, this book looks fantastic. I can't wait to see what you make out of it. I've got some Japanese amigurumi crochet books and it makes me happy just looking at them.

By the way, I love that you managed to use the word doppelganger in a post about crochet.

Have you seen the Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs book (I can get you the ISBN if you need it) yet? I have it and I like it a lot. Not *quite* the same as a Japanese craft book, but still nice to look at and add to the library, in my opinion. Can't wait to see the purses you come up with...!

I have officially decided that if someone does not like a Japanese craft book there must be something wrong with them.

I use to take the train into the city when I lived in CT - I Loved it! And I'm crazy about the brown motif with the beige swirlies in it. Reminds me of fireworks that I love that swirl and fizzle out slowly

Looks like a great book The books are fantastic.
I'm going to visit NY in the beginning of November, is it easy to find Japanese books from there? My first time in US, so I have no idea...

I love those purses! I am just getting back into knitting and crocheting...need to finish all of my old half done projects before I can tackle new ones. But those purses could make it very high on the list! I really enjoy your blog.

Love the purses! I tried finding the book by the ISBN number you gave, but nothing comes up. What am I doing wrong? Can you please give us the title?

Thanks!

I think the purses are beautiful. I'm just teaching my eldest daughter to crochet and this will be an excellent challenge for her.

Really, great thank you, Alice. Thank to you, I've discover this book, and the crochet patterns book 300 you reviewed in an other post. I've received them yesterday, and they are really great, beautiful and really appeal me for many new projects!

I love the same purse you are crafting about ;-) I follow your progress with interest, before making the plunge for myself.
