Denim Straps

Lynne emailed and asked about how I made my denim grocery bags.  While I was answering her I realized I forgot to include something important in my post.

No matter what your brain tells you, it's impossible to sew denim straps inside-out and then turn them right-side-out like you do with normal fabric.  My brain kept telling me that the straps were totally wide enough to turn, so I didn't sew one and try it out first.  I sewed all four before I realized my brain was a big dummy.

Luckily, I use Blogline's super-handy "clip" function*, and I remembered that I'd just clipped a double-sided strap tutorial posted by Fat Orange Cat.  The tutorial isn't exactly what I did, but it gave me the idea of how to sew the straps once I seam-ripped all 12 feet of them.
Basically, I cut the strap fabric so it was two-times the width of the strap I wanted plus one inch.  (1) Then I folded in half an inch on each edge and ironed it.  (2) Then I folded the strap in half so the two half-inch folds were together on the inside of the strap.  (3) Then I sewed up each side.  Ta da.

*When you clip something in bloglines, it gets saved to your "Clippings" tab.  I've made a bunch of folders to save my clips ... "Stuff To Buy"  "How To"  "Things To Make"  Things I've clipped have come in handy several times!

I haven't sewn with denim before but when I do, I'll keep this in mind.

Thanks for the bag info...They look great!

On a side note: When I saw these rings http://www.kiku-co.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=10 I thought of you and your computer chip collection and thought you might want to experiment with resin. Have fun!

ohhhh 12 feet. ICK. I barely make it through seam-ripping 12 inches - much less 12 feet. That's determination!

Thanks so much! I've just finished the bulk of a bag formerly known as "a pair of faded black jeans belonging to my husband" and "a World Wildlife Fund t-shirt that was too small when i bought it", and i was not looking forward to adding straps. Now it doesn't seem like as much of a burden.

All i need now is the owner's manual for my Kenmore sewing machine that was purchased in 1981... I can't figure out how to change the stitches to option 2...

I swear you FREAK me out because I save clippings too. Ok that's not the freaky part. The freaky part is I have folders like "stuff I want to make" and "things to buy". Except I categorize them further like "things to buy - fabric", "things to buy - toys".

Oh, thanks for the denim strap tutorial. I have tried to sew bulky fabrics and you're right, they're impossible to turn right side out! Also, I am loving the embroidery project from the previous post!

Alice, your straps are a lifesaver. Thanks!! I've been ignoring a purse I began sewing earlier in the summer because I couldn't get the straps figured out (they involved turning inside-out and the fabric was just too thick to do so). I'm a novice sewer, so this breathes new life into my project. :) Now I can begin again!

Brilliant! Love how clear the picture tutorial is . . . I've just gotten a new sewing machine and serger (sort of like buying a new car, but with better financing) so I'm feeling the sewing urge . . .
