Effing Memes

I like to play the crusty curmudgeon (and maybe I am).  I feel the same way Korallin feels about memes and web awards (and I often need a nap, too).  But (but!) sometimes I enjoy a little of the blog-meme action (like I did here, and here, and here, and here).

Futuregirl Avatar

So this week I found myself making an avatar after seeing  Green Kitchen's and thinking, "Wow, that really looks kinda like her." (and her Sis', too!)  And now, going back to see them to make the links, I realize we all have the same shirt on, but I changed the stripes to be black and grey like my favorite shirt. ever.  I've worn that shirt once a week since I bought it a couple years ago.  I added the freckles in Photoshop.

Six Unspectacular Quirks About Yourself

What a wonderful segue to the "six unspectacular quirks about yourself" meme that Christina from Little Wilds tagged me for (which I was tagged ... whatever).  I'm not going to follow the rules (which you can see on her blog in your interested) because that's how I roll.

1) If I find an article of clothing I like, I wear it once a week until it's dead.  I'd wear them more than once a week if I washed clothes more often.

2) I mispronounce words.  Mostly ones I've only read and haven't heard other people use.  Like ancillary ... which I say (... or, I guess, said) /ann-sillary/ (rhymes with Hillary) but should really be pronounced /an' sil airy/.  I have to pause before I say superfluous because it wants to come out of my mouth /su'per-flew-us/ instead of /su-perf'-ew-lus/, but at least I know that one's wrong.  I've also been called out on biopic ... which I say (said) /bi-op-ick/ instead of the correct /bi-oh-pick/. [** edit, I had the biopic pronunciations mixed up**].

3) I'm very particular about the smoothness and non-movingness of the covers while I sleep.  Very. Particular.

4) I don't like to eat fruit.  I'll eat cold cut up apples, but that's about it.

5) I got caught smelling my own arm at work last week and I realized that I do it all the time.  I like the way the sun-ripened raspberry shower gel smells.  Luckily I was only seen sniffing my bicep.  I think I usually bury my nose in my elbow pit and then I breath in slowly and deeply.

6) I eat breakfast cereal dry and out of a cup.  Like I'm drinking it.  I don't like milk or fake-o milk substitutes.  But I *do* like breakfast cereal.

Those are pretty unspectacular.  Nothing too shocking or cool.

Things I Assume You Know

This is also a great time to mention that I added a new section to my about page called "Things I assume you know."   I realized recently that I've started to assume that my readers know stuff about me and I figured I should let people who are new to my blog know what those things are.  And, to keep you from having to click, I'll just list 'em here:

- My name is Alice.
- I'm 36 years old.
- My husband's name is Andrew.
- I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
- I lived in San Francisco for 9 years from 1992 to 2001.
- I grew up in the Midwest.
- I've been crafty my whole life.
- Currently I mainly crochet, handsew things out of felt, and embroider.
- I'm alergic to wool.
- I love Japanese craft books.
- I'm really into owls, peacocks, lions (especially on buildings), and octopuses.
- I also really like skulls, flames, and glitter.
- I don't knit. I only have so much time.
- I'm obsessed with being organized.
- I love lists, notebooks, and organizational systems.
- I work full-time outside of the house.
- I'm a web programmer.
- I wrote my blog application using ASP.NET (VB.NET) and SQL Server 2005.
- I try to visit the websites of everyone who comments.
- I try to respond to all my comments.
- Sometimes I don't have the time to visit or respond. I wish I did.

wow, someone else who doesn't eat fruit! You're the first person I've met. I'm trying to eat fruit as I know it's good for me but it's just so messy and the texture is so different and there's all those ewwy bits you have to pull off. Give me a juice any day!
The only fruit I really enjoy is raspberries. I refuse to ever try again pears, grapes or apples and if I do have any fruit it must be cold! At the moment I've been mashing/blending up fruits like watermelon, papaya and mango and putting them into icy lolly containers and freezing them and eating them that way so that the flavour isn't so strong and it's just like eatng a normal ice lolly.

well seeya, Shivi

I'm too crazy about a lot of fruit either so don't feel like the lone stranger. I missed the giveaway! Bummer!
Oh well. Love the new purse!
Have a great day,
Tracy M.

Wait, you've got the "biopic" pronunciations backwards, I think. Unless I say it wrong too.

David CL: I had 'em mixed up ... of course *you* say it right. ;)

I pronounce things wrong all the time too like. The one I always get called on is debacle. I read so much and know far more words than I can find use for every day so I'll break out a word I really like that I've read (wrongly) for years and say it wrong.

I didn't know you were allergic to wool. I love posts like this.

So Andrew must be a very still sleeper?

Bwa ha ha ha!! That had me laughing a few times VERY LOUDLY. Why? Because of the similarities to me. I made one of those manga faces last night. But I didn't save it. It had on a skull necklace.

The whole washing the clothes thing. Very familiar. Along with not folding the laundry.

Mispronouncing words. I sat here for a while muttering the words to myself seeing if I pronounced them all correctly. And ummm...I don't!! And I didn't even know it.

The covers. I have to have my blanket and sheet faced a certain way. (I say my blanket because we do separate blankets and I only use a sheet, not Alan.) I like the band, you know the top, to be near my head. It can't be on the side or the bottom. I try to convince Alan that this is absolutely logical because they're longer that way. And it can't be bunched up or folded. It needs to be a single layer or it's too hot. But he says I'm a freak.

I'm so glad to find out that I'm not the only person who mispronounces words. I read too many books as a kid and got left with all sorts of screwed up ideas about how things should sound.

Then I moved to America and had a whole load of new pronounciations to learn. I can't even remember which is English and which is American any more and just pick pronounciations randomly.

And when my husband tells me that I have mispronounced something, I'll always tell him that's the English way and we created the language, even when I'm not sure. Because I don't lose arguments to him. ever.

Great to know more about you. I'm thirty six also. I thought we were close in age!

Hehe! I don't feel so alone now! I do the same thing about mispronouncing words that I have only read. My husband calls me on it frequently, especially when we read the same books.

Hi Alice! I just started reading your blog not too long ago. I also live in Philly and just moved from SF, small world! I like meme's because it is a nice way to get to know more about my favorite crafty bloggers! I do the exact same thing with mispronouncing words - my fiancee corrects me on it every time; I just tell him that I like the way I pronounce it better. :) I can't think of any right now, but I'm pretty sure I do it at least once per day! I look forward to reading your blog more!

My husband eats cereal (crunchy meuslix, thank you) the same way, though he does eat a spoon. I think you share the love of cereal without milk with most of France, actually. I'm sure they'd like it more if the milk was fresh (most milk here is UHT and stored in cardboard boxes that last for months, until you open them!).

My 7 year old eats cereal the same way. Great list of stuff! I *heart* making lists too! The more notebooks/pads of paper the better!

I am not a meme fan. Partially because I thought some were really inane and how could I do some and not the others? Also there is that part of me that hates feeling left out and memes bring that out. I was never a big chain mail fan. So I guess it's related. But they do serve the purpose of getting to know one better. Insert Sound of Music clip here.

You should check out what RicRac just recently wrote about tags and memes on her blog..it was really cute.

A few similarities between us..36 yrs old. I MUST be organized! I have an awesome and i mean awesome husband. I've been crafty my whole life and make things with felt and embroider. I love owls(after living in an area where barred owls appeared in our yard almost daily and you heard them almost every night). I love Japanese craft. I wake up if the covers move even one inch so much so that we have separate bedrooms. Differences..I SUCK at computers and that's why you have no link to me..but I'm learning! I don't crochet. I love fruit!

You know, I did the manga-me but really didn't feel like it looked like me. You & Michelle & Becktress totally look like yours, tho.
