I'm A Cry Baby And Cactus Update - August

Cry Baby

I feel like a whiner for complaining about not having enough time in my last post.  Who *does* have enough time?  Or money?  Or chocolate?

Sometimes I get so focused on the projects I haven't finished, the projects I haven't started, the patterns I haven't published, the posts I haven't written, the crafting supplies I haven't purchased, the thank yous I haven't sent ... that I fail to see all the things I actually *have* accomplished.  I have a lot to be proud of.  Thanks for pointing that out (the the nicest and funniest way) Blue  and lil' d!

Avatars 2.0

When I showed Andrew my avatar he said, "You don't have black eyebrows."  And he's right.

When I went back to remake myself I took the time to figure out how to change the background and noticed that you can move some of the elements up and down, like mouths.  Moving the mouth down a click or two makes your avatar look a little older.

More About Memes

Also, I totally forgot to tell you why I end up doing memes even though I can't even bear to utter the word ... it's because I love reading yours so much!  I love learning about you guys, seeing pictures of you, hearing your secrets.  I figure that I'm not the only one who likes it, so I might give you a tiny glimpse into my Aliceness.  I still think there's something icky about them, though. :)

Cactus Update - August

Grow you little bastards!  Grow!  Why are they still so teeny tiny?  Am I going to have to wait until next Spring for another growth spurt?  And ... I killed another one last month.  Three down, eighty-two to go.  More pictures on Flickr.  [ Note: I've compared last month's photo of the red-spiked cactus to this month's, and it has grown a leeeetle bit.  But that's not saying much since it's only 20 mm tall (that's less than an inch). ]

Could it be that they don't have enough room to grow? There are quite a few in there. I seem to remember that cactii grow really big roots since they search for water... but then again I kill all the plants I try to grow. ;)

I've tried 3 times now to grow a cactus from seed, and nothing will ever grow :/

Lauren might be right about there being too many in the container (doesn't explain why mine wont even start though)

I love your blog! However, being an engineer (read: nerd who should probably get out more) I am wondering if you meant "20 mm" not "cm", since 20 cm would be like, well, 7.87 inches. Or maybe you meant "2 cm", which is the same thing as 20 mm... In any case, I love gardening, too, and am inspired to try sprouting some cacti now! :)

A long time ago (I'm guessing it was around 15 years back) I got one of those little cactus eggs (I think it came from Carlsbad Caverns) and attempted to sprout the seeds. I didn't plant them as nicely as you did so only one survived. Once it got big enough I planted it in my parents' backyard (they live in Texas) and it's been growing (very slowly!) ever since. For the longest time I had no idea what kind of cactus it was, but now that it's finally gotten about 3 feet tall I've realized (with about 99.9% certainty) that it's a saguaro! I thought that was so funny, because I live in Arizona now where saguaros are a big deal - everyone makes a fuss about how hard they are to grow and keep alive. But there my parents are in humid south Texas with a baby saguaro in their backyard, and the only thing they've done to care for it in the past 15 years is to leave it alone! :D

We've just started growing cacti (or caticises, as my husband calls them); they all sprouted pretty quickly, but now it's slow progress. Yours are so very adorable! I love how they are spiky already when they are so wee.

Nice cacti - I've been following their progress since you first posted about them a few months ago. I remember mentioning to my boyfriend at the time how you were going to re-pot them once they got bigger. He laughed and said that you'll be waiting a long time because they grow VERY slowly - I forget how long he said it'll probably be... but it was a long time! (he's a keen gardener and knows alot about plants)

So good luck with those and I hope you've got lots of patience :)

I just love these little baby cacti! I remember when I was a kid I once bought this bag with cacti seeds. I don't remember them growing well though...

But wouldn't it be kind of cool if they stayed tiny forever and they could be your microscopic cactus garden?! This way you'll never have to worry about having enough space for them all.
