Rocking The Doily
Yesterday's post got me thinking. I'm not sure why I've always been a little snobby about doilies. Maybe it's the name, maybe it's the proper sitting-room vibe, maybe I'm just a snob. But lately I've been seeing some awesome doily action around the web, and I'm starting to reconsider my position on doilies:
beautiful necklaces
lace and doily lampshade
cute doily earrings
a covered tree
doily dolly hair
rock babies
crochet dog
and
chair
and
other stuff
everything at the
Starch It Flickr Group
cow heads
and, of course the
skull-a-day doily skull
aka "skoily"

These are some cool links! I love Bitter Betty's doily necklaces, too - but hadn't seen a lot of this other stuff. Seems like the thrift stores are teeming with doilies - so I love having some good idea for putting them to use. Thanks!

Big crochet on the wall, eh? How about trying macrame cord? You might have to look in the second hand shops for it, but may be able to find it elsewhere -- macrame has been out of fashion for a few DECADES, so it could be tricky finding it... Good luck!

I'm not so much into doilies, but made some kind-of-doily earrings for selling, and now I'm working on a ring for a friend. It is a tiny doily that I'm trying to turn into a sculpture.
Well, it's not that I despise doilies altogether. In fact, as with many things, I like to separate things from their traditional usage.
Thanks for the links. If your intention was to spread inspiration, you got it!

WOW at the skull. The circles kinda look like engine gears. Really cool.
I was going to mention Joana Vasconcelos to you until I saw the cow head. Still, you can find a lot more similar work by her like these statues:

All those pics are awesome. I don't do many doilies since my grandmother burnt me out making them for her, but these pics give me good ingredients to go in the invention oven.
