Cactus Update - July

Oh, look at how big number 34 is getting!  Some differences are starting to show up in the spikes of the cacti.  This one's spikes are all white.  Some have dark spikes along with the white.
And number 45 has *red* spikes.  Right now they are all still basically all the same shape, but if the spikes are any indication, it seems as though we have a nice mix of cactus types.
The little puff of spikes in the dirt is number 3.  He and number 85 died since last month.  They just shriveled up one day.  I suspect I was over watering, so I've cut back.  To see a whole family photo with numbered notes, check out my Flickr.

The City Folk Go Carless

We've been talking about getting rid of our car for a while.  You know, to simplify.  Apparently, we weren't moving fast enough for the car, so it decided to take matters into it's own hands.  I'll spare you the gory details, but most of last weekend and a huge portion of this week was spent dealing with the car and the aftermath of the car.  Excluding the gory details and the ass-kicking week that left me no time to craft-blog, we're happily carless now!  Yay!

Sorry to hear you had problems with it, but it's funny how the universe just kind of makes you do things ;)
They are a huge expense and responsibility anyway, if you guys can get by without one you are better off :)

I am so in love with your cacti! I really, really need to look for cactus seeds around here.

As for the car, if you can do without, good riddance! It would be so nice to not have to deal with one.

I love these cacti posts! How cool that they're beginning to develop different spines.

And congrats on going car-free. We've been there for just about a year, and I must say: life is so much easier, cheaper, and healthier without one.

Yay car free! Enjoy! We went car free 4 years ago and I've never been happier. We rent cars occassionally when we need to get out of town, otherwise its walk/cycle/transit and I LOVE it.

Barh! They are taking FOREVER. I am so impatient. P.S. I am living vicariously through your cacti instead of getting my own. Although there is this corner yearning to become a guerrilla garden that would be perfect...

oh no! it doesn't sound like the ideal way to go carless but it's funny how fate really does listen in :)

I just love these little cactus buddies. They are like tiny, warm (prickly!) fuzzies.

cute cactus!

and as for the car thing - bicycles are the best way to go if you live in the city. I live in LA (hollywood) and love that I can take the subway and bike everywhere.

I love your dedication to your tiny cacti friends. They are doing great and your pictures of them are quite excellent. I have a cool planter dish that I'm sentimental about cuz I looted from my good friend's belongings after he got deported (I hope he doesnt' mind...I just said I looted his planter on the internet!). It's a pretty shallow planter so I was just thinking I would have to get some teensy succulents and cacti to make a mini landscape. I wish you lived in SF so I could snag one of your cute little cactus guys.

The tiny cacti pictures left me breathless. Almost cuter than human babies!!

We'd like to go no car but might have to wait for public transport to get better. That's one of the great things about city living- it's really not hard to not have a car.
