Big Things Come In Small Packages

Yesterday I got a tiny package from my friend Stephanie of Ruby Crowned Kinglette.  I was expecting this package from her, but I was surprised by how tiny the stack of linen is.  I imagined it would be huge ... to match our grand plan ...

We are starting a year-long collaboration.  Every two weeks we will be provided with a word which we will then interpret in embroidery on one of these linen squares.  That's 26 squares each.  I'm very excited about this.  Stephanie is an incredible artist and a huge inspiration to me.  I'm very curious to see what kinds of similarities and differences emerge over the year.

At the beginning of 2008 I said I didn't want to fetter myself with a scheduled creative task, but, as always, things change.  Now it feels right to take on this (mini) challenge to create something.  My time has become super limited, and in the spare moments it'll be awesome to have a project to work on that can be completed pretty quickly.  Especially since I tend toward the immense and overwhelming when it comes to craft projects.  I mean, how much embroidery can you fit on a 4-inch square?

Stephanie posted our correspondence about the project, which, truth be told, gave me a heart attack before I realized how funny we sound.

Alice, This is the answer to my dreams and super sucky day job. I have a co-worker that needs some anti stress as well - may we blatantly rip off your idea for ourselves? I love the idea of some sort of at -work-only craft.

I'm super excited to see what you both do. As someone who has yet to experiment with this type of craft (and who's honestly blown away by the detail and time it take to do it), and who is well aware of what cool things both of you have done, I'm eager to see the results.

I trust you to test the limits of what can be embroidered on a tiny little square! I think this is a great project.
