Flower Purse - Update 1

I've started the flower purse from this book.  I'm using the smallest hook I dare with the worsted weight cotton, and it appears that the purse is going to be GIANT sized.  Since there's no people in the pictures in the book, I just made up in my head that the purse was smallish.  FAIL.
Look how wide that is (33 inches)!  It gets gathered a lot along the top edge, but I still think I'll be able to fit a medium-sized pony in there!  Maybe there's something about the physics of Japanese crochet patterns that I just don't understand yet. :)
Before I started I was stressing about what colors to make it in.  I think I've got some sort of block against making something according to the pattern.  I finally decided to make it like the picture because (1) I have those colors of yarn already, and (2) I didn't think I'd ever be able to decide on a color scheme.

Woah.. that is a tad on the larger than your average purse size. Look on the bright side.. you should be able to get a few tools in there to keep with you just in case a "..I need a hammer right now!!" emergency comes up. You never know when one could strike!

Is that 33" for one side? Because that is crazy big. Maybe they use thinner yarn, something really super thin like a baby yarn? That's going to be something to look at, at that size!

Hi Alice,

Just wanted to tell you that I've been following your blog for the past few weeks. I can't wait to see how this purse will turn out! I'm so tempted to buy this book, which my local Japanese bookstore has in stock! ;-)

LOL - are you sure that wasn't a "make your own crocheted hammmock" book or a "make your own electric car cozy" book? Sometimes the kanji can be hard to read . . .

Either way, it's looking great!!

Is that 33" one side or all the way around the top? It looks gathered and the armhole doesn't look that big! How very odd!

Damn, must be for Japan's largest girl! Maybe once it gets gathered at the top it looks right? P.S. if you need any of it translated, scan the page, circle the part you're stumped over, and e-mail it to me. My friend's Japanese mother has helped me translate a few conundrums over here lately.

A. *whispers* You're missing an R in your title, shhh! (sorry)

B. BIG! Maybe it should be translated as a Secret Japanese-Style Bag of Holding? Or Pretty Crocheted Tardis?

C. Such a neutral outside provides infinite possibilities with a lining fabric!

The interjection of 'fail' made me smile. Especially because I thought the same thing when I inserted a snap the wrong way on a cozy this weekend. Sigh.

Oh my goodness. That is too funny! A small pony! I hate it when crafts don't work out though, it is so frustrating!

Ah, but it will be beautiful. That pony will never travel again in such style as when it was carried in your bag.

If you give up, send it to me - 33 inches sounds about the right size for a baby blanket, and I've got 3 to produce by Christmas.
