Monster Pentagon

I found the Giant Floor Ball book at the library (the bestest place on Earth).  I took the pattern and lots of yarn with me to get my car inspected, thinking I'd have all the time in the world to whip one out.  Well, it seems that when you remember to get your car inspected early in the month, then an inspection takes less than an hour.  That wasn't nearly enough time to finish this monster.

I had a hell of a time following the pattern.  I'm a visual person and it was just text, so I found myself getting lost in all the words.  Plus, they put the explanation of many of the pattern stitches in the middle of the instructions instead of before, so it doubly obfuscated what the hell I was supposed to be doing.  And, on top of all that, every row is different.  Craziness!

But all the eye-crossing and head-aching was worth it because I learned so much about pentagon-making.  I'm also learned that I'm a very conservative crocheter.  I almost never incorporate pattern stitches, random back-and-forth-ness, or general wackiness into my work.  I mean, look at those popcorn stitches.  They are totally EXTREME.  Over the top.  Knobby McKnobbystein.  They could put an eye out.  Maybe that's what crochet needs, some danger.

I've never met Knobby McKnobbystein, but I have met Surrie McFurrie and Grumpy VerGrumpelson.

Wow that is HUGE! And I like popcorn. Mmmmm popcorn. Especially kettle corn. Yum. I know you were talking about popcorn stitches but I got stuck on the word popcorn. And you know I'm sure I was going to comment something else but the thought of popcorn has knocked everything else out of my head. :-D

Fantastic. I love those rows of spike stitch buried in there. It looks like some secret language, like a Rosetta stone of crochet :)
Toots,

I've found that retyping and rearranging instructions helps bypass the aggravating part and go right to the clarity. You can also increase type size and leading for optimal readability. Of course I am a geek and a graphic designer so that's like second nature. Maybe you'd rather be crocheting? :)

OK, stupid question time...

What are you planning on doing with the monster ball?

I suppose, in the interest of adding some danger to crochet, you could begin a very large game of catch!

Or go super-retro and crochet into it some of those mirror panels that used to be embroidered into vests and jackets to create a very squishy discoball?

The middle of a year-round, fiber art snowperson?

Anyway, I digress, as usual.

Great work (and please keep us posted on the progress of the pentagons and impending ball!
