Handbag For Barb

* * * * * *
UPDATE:  The Starling Handbag crochet pattern for the purse above is now available on the free downloads page.  Yay!
* * * * * *

I made this handbag for a previous co-worker.  She noticed that I made myself a handbag, and saw me crocheting all the time, so she asked if I'd make her one, too.  She took me out to lunch a million-and-one times in exchange - which was fine with me. :)

As you can see, I based the stripe and dash pattern on the fabric I chose as a lining.  I love the blues in the fabric.  I just happened to have just enough teal yarn left over from another project to use for this handbag.  Yay for stash-using.

I have a thing for stripes in a big way.  It's totally accidental.  I never think about it, I'm just drawn to them.  Years ago a friend pointed out that over half the shirts hanging in my closet had horizontal stripes on them ... I'd never noticed.

I didn't make a label for this handbag because I never told Barb about my craft blog.  In fact, I never told anyone at that job about it.  Is that weird?  Do any of you not-tell certain people about your craft-blog-self?

hi!
I don't tell most of the people that I have a blog and I don't know why... and when somebody says: "oh, you should see her blog!" I turn red... and say: "it wasn't supposed to tell!" I guess I'm still too shy and not very confident in myself... as if I was still a girl!

My boyfriend only saw my craft blog today! I've only had it a short while, but it's MY thing. I haven't told my family either, except for one sister and I don't think she's visiting often. Otherwise, no one knows. I'm a secretive girl, too.

That is such BEAUTIFUL bag. I sometimes add craft stuff into my blog, but, that's only every now and then. I don't tell anyone about my love for fabric, making landscape quilts and handbags. I guess I think that nobody would want to hear about it.

I'm a secretive craft blogger too. The folks at work don't like that I have a life outside of this desk :(

I think my favorite part is that the pen matches the lining. It's something I would do.

I tell everyone about my blog, because I need constant reassurance and I'm poor and hope that the world decides to buy things from me, thereby eliminating the poor.

My gosh, even my best friends didn't know I had a blog for the longest time. Now I'm much more comfortable about telling random folks but I'd *never* tell people at my day job.

No one knew I had a blog up until about a month ago. I still haven't told the people at work. I know they'll think it is weird. They aren't crafty people.

Very cute purse!

I'm with you on the stripes and also on the no-one-at-the-day-job-knows. Not that it's much of a blog, considering how extremely seldom I post.

I think there's something about keeping a controlled front on what people at work get to know about you. And there's something that feels granny-ish or kooky or something - like, my coworkers might ooo and ahhh over my latest knit hat as I work on it at the lunch table. They might even be impressed that it's not the first hat I've knit in one year. But I don't know that I need them to be IMPRESSED with the free time I devote to making stuff and the free time I spend WRITING and BLOGGING about, um, the stuff I make? Like, it would be pretty impressive if they knew I cared about it all THAT MUCH. Which, I do and I don't, and it's just sort of fun, and sort of cool to tap into stuff on the craft blog network, and a blog-about-craft-stuff, to those who don't read others, well, could be seen WAY out of proportion.

This bag is adorable, and I hope I'll be able to crochet like you when I grow up.

I've told almost nobody in Portland about my craft blog. I have a bit of notoriety in PDX for Church of Craft, but I don't think more than a few people in that group know about the blog/podcast.

It's a perfect bag!
I don't tell about the blog for people in town. I don't talk much about personal things but I still post photos and small ideas of my life...so, I never tell...Only my parents, husband and few friends know about it.

Can you imagine me keeping quiet about anything?

I love stripes too. They make me happy. But I love stripes mixed with polka dots even more. It seems like such a riot of design when they're together. And I don't mean "riot" as in funny.

I particularly enjoy the broken stripe on this bag.

No that's not weird. Only my close friends and family know. I don't really advertise the fact that I have a blog to anyone else.

I don't tell anyone at work much of anything.

If they did read my blog it would kinda feel like they saw me naked or something.

Wow, it's seems a lot of us feel the same way about sharing our blogs with co-workers. I fall into the same category! My blog is a much more personal part of who I am and I like to keep it separate from my work. Funny that I'm excited about sharing it with total strangers!

Hi! Just delurking. Only a select few know about my blog, the ones who would understand, anyway. Everyone else would probably look at me different when they find out I'm a blogger, specially when I see how we're portrayed in the media.

It's weird, I am happy to tell internet people that i have a blog, and actually most of my family, my boyfriend and some of my friends also know. But i refuse to tell anyone i know in real life the URL! I'm just so embarrassed, because i don't think of them reading it when i write it - i think of crafty internet people reading it! Silly me.

The bag is beautiful - i love crisp, clean blues - very calming, but in a neat and tidy sort of way.
