Perfect Match
I just noticed how perfectly this brooch matches my bag.

OMG, I could DIE with how much I love this bag! I am a sucker for color, every time. I recently tried to make a handbag for my little sister's birthday, inspired by your own awesomeness, and completely destroyed the whole project when I sewed the lining in. How do you keep from showing the stitches on the outside? I had this horrible not-too-straight bobbin thread line running along the outside of mine!

I hand sew the lining into the bag. I will eventually post a tutorial so I can show everyone exactly how I do it. It's probably easier to hand sew it in than to use the machine.
I can't think of a good way to use the sewing machine ... that darn bobbin thread would be impossible to hide.

What an awesome bag. The colors are so cheerful and uplifting. And I believe the brooch was the perfect choice. You have done it again, Alice.

Yes, this is great, the holding tab for zippering, all of it.I love the bag and the brooch with it is brilliant. I've got some fruity colored yarn that I've been making a baby blanket with. Maybe when I'm done I can use some of the leftovers for a happy looking bag such as this.

Oooh! That brooch really is the perfect addition! I have been making your octopus stuffies lately and I LOVE them. The pattern is such a nice thing in itself, too. I've been making his 'n' hers octopi as wedding gifts and now it looks like I might be making multiple orange octopi (and some green seaweed for them to sit in) as table centres for my friend's wedding. Yup - everyone loves a futuregirl octopus!

I love your little bag. I made myself a bag much like that when I was in the 7th grade and that was a 100 years ago. Your bag brought back many good memories. :)

I'm sorry I keep commenting on older posts, but I keep having questions for you!
On this bag, I was wondering how you got the zipper across the top of the lining like that? For some reason, I can't for the life of me figure out a logical way to attach a top zipper. I got the zipper pocket down, but this one is stumping me.
Keep up the great work!

Kristin ... Comment on any posts you'd like! I love hearing from you.
Take a look at this post where I first mentioned this bag:
http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2007/7/candy-striped-bag.aspx
In the pictures you can kind of see, all I did was sew the zipper to the sides of one of my normal handbag linings. Nothing special. Basically, I made a normal lining using my tutorial, I put the zipper on one side and sewed it, and then I put the zipper on the other side and sewed it. Done. Just leave a long tail (longer than I did) on the side where the pull is when the zipper is open so that you can get your hand in the bag without ripping up all your hand skin. :)
It's not high-tech, but it worked.

That's kind of what I figured about how you did it, but the main thing I'm not seeing (maybe I should look at some fabric with a zipper attached and I could see it better :p) is how to attach it to the crochet part once you have the zipper on the lining. When I sew the lining into the bag, I sew right on the edge, like you explain in your tutorial. Do you just fold a section between the "top" of the lining and the "bottom" of the zipper and sew it on there, or am I missing something?? I'm sorry if that is confusing!!
Thanks so much for your prompt answers! I love all your work and envy your talent!!

I sewed the lining in the bag just like my tutorial. To attach the zipper, I laid it on the lining so the top of the zipper was against the inside of the bag and sewed the edge of the zipper to the lining about an inch below the top edge of the lining (repeat on other side) so when the zipper is closed you can't see the sewing.

So you sew the zipper onto the lining before you put the lining in the bag, right? And machine sew the zipper on and then sew the lining into the bag with the zipper open? Hmm I'll have to play around.
Thank you again. I appreciate all the help!! Sorry to keep bugging; I just haven't found a good tutorial anywhere and can't seem to figure it out.

Kristin ... Yep. I sew the zipper into the lining before sewing the lining into the bag. If you look at handbags that have a zipper sewn to the lining, you'll see what I mean about leaving a tail at the end of the zipper that isn't sewn to the lining. You can always try something and see if it works and tweak it and try again.
