Crochet Revolution

I did my duty and whipped up a crochet revolution armband in support of Crochet Me: article here, pattern here.  I can't resist a project that involves crochet *and* skulls.

Instead of the color work they suggest, I just cross stitched over the single crochet.  So much easier.  Except I didn't follow my own skull chart and mister skull's head is two squares wider than I planned.  Also, their pattern says the armband is 4 inches wide when laid flat.  Just so you know, mine is about 50% bigger than that.

Show your support of crochet and whip up an armband!  All it takes is twenty minutes and a little bit of green yarn.  Viva la revolución!

Oooh how fun!

Ok that's it. The project that pushed me over to try to figure out crocheting, finally. I keep meaning to learn but the drive just isn't strong enough. But yep. This did it. Let me go dig up my crochet book.

Si, que viva. Now, are you going to wear it around? That is the Real Test of your Revolutionary Fervor. If you aren't going to wear it around, are there re-education camps they (sorry, They) will send you to?

Blaize - You got me there ... I don't think I have the guts to wear it out. I totally would if you and I were going out on the town. Me with my arm band and you with Neville.

I assume that the crochet revolution has to do with the fact that knitting has got a higher status than crocheting in the US. I can’t help but think that this phenomenon is so bizarre, at least seen from a Scandinavian perspective. The first time a read about this knit vs. crochet feud, I actually thought it was a joke, and I didn’t think any more about it. Then I read about it in Debbie Stoller’s book, The Happy Hooker, and I started to realize that this actually was a real thing. Later, I’ve read several places about people feeling they are unwanted in yarn shops etc. if they say they crochet. I still can’t understand this phenomenon. To Scandinavians, knitting and crocheting are just different techniques applied when making something with yarn. Both techniques have their strengths and weaknesses. Do you have any theories or explanations to why this “knitting is so much better than crocheting”-phenomenon exists in the US?

Viva la crochet! This is fab! I think I want everyone to wear these at my funeral (don't worry - it's not pending).

What a great project! Wonderful to see crocheting get the edge it deserves.
