Tutorial: Crochet Beaded Bracelet

I've found another use for my crochet cotton thread - a beaded bracelet. It's great for summer, when you might be getting sweaty, dirty, or jumping in the pool (sea, lake, whatever), because it's washable - so you don't even have to take it off.

This pattern could easily be changed to be an anklet or choker.  It's a simple single crochet, so you can add stitches to make it wider and rows to make it longer.  I used beads for my bracelet, but you can use anything you can string on the thread: beads, buttons, sequins ... use your imagination *and* your stash.

I reserve the copyright on the pattern and the instructions (which means you can't reprint this anywhere), but feel free to make all the bracelets you want and do anything you want with them (yep, you can sell them).

If you make a bracelet, let me know.  I'd love to see it!

Supplies

Crochet Cotton Thread
48 beads
1 button
big-holed needle
size C (2 or 2.75mm) crochet hook

Abbreviations

sl = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bsc* = beaded single crochet

*Bead Single Crochet: (bsc): Do a normal single crochet, except after you put your hook through the stitch in the previous row, pull a bead up to your hook and then yarn over using the crochet cotton thread on the far side of the bead.  Then pull the loop through the stitch in the previous row.  You will now have two loops on the hook and the bead will be looped against the piece.  Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the single crochet.

Basic Instructions

· Thread 48 beads on crochet cotton thread.
· ch 7, leaving about 10" of crochet cotton thread before the start of the chain.
· Row 1 - Starting with 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the next 6 ch, ch 1, turn.
· Row 2 - sc in each stitch across (total 6), ch 1, turn.
· Row 3 - sc in each stitch across (total 6), ch 1, turn.
· Row 4 - sc, bsc, sc, bsc, sc, bsc, ch 1, turn.
· Row 5 - sc in each stitch across (total 6), ch 1, turn.
· Row 6 - 2 sc, bsc, sc, bsc, sc, ch 1, turn.
· Row 7 - repeat Rows 3-6 until you've used all the beads.
· Last Row - sc in each stitch across (total 6), ch 3, turn.
· Button Hole - skip 5 stitches, sc in last stitch of previous row, finish off, weave in end.
· Attach button with 10" thread at beginning of bracelet and weave in end.

Detailed Instructions (text is above, or next to, its corresponding photo)

1) Thread 48 beads on crochet cotton thread.  I bought sky quartz beads.  They were $6 for two packs of 24.  When you're stringing your beads, count them two times, and then count them again.  All of the beads must be on the thread before you start, so it pays to make sure they are all there.  I used the big-eyed needle to thread them on.

2) Chain 7. Leave about 10 inches of thread before you start crocheting.  This will be used to attach the button later.

I'm a tight crocheter.  I've found I need to make these chains extra tight or else the first row is much wider than the rest of the rows. Usually I don't have to worry about this, but I do with the crochet cotton thread.

3) Row 1 - Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, single crochet in each of the next 6 chains (total 6 single crochet), chain 1, turn.

4) Row 2 & 3 - Single crochet in each stitch across (total 6 single crochet), chain 1, turn.

5) Row 4 - Single crochet, bead single crochet, single crochet, bead single crochet, single crochet, bead single crochet, chain 1, turn.

Below are photos of the bead single crochet (bsc).  [A] put hook in the stitch of the previous row and pull a bead up to the hook.  [B] Yarn over using the thread on the far side of the bead.  [C] Complete the single crochet as normal.

6) This is the completed Row 4.

You may be wondering why the beads aren't centered on the bracelet.  I found that if I had a five-stitch-wide bracelet and I put a bead on stitch one, three, and five, that the first bead looked like it was hanging off the edge of the bracelet.  The way the bead is secured by a diagonal thread makes it lay to the right a little.  That's why I added a stitch before the first bead.

7) Row 5 - Single crochet in each stitch across (total 6 single crochet), chain 1, turn.  While you crochet this row, the beads are facing you.

8) Row 6 - single crochet, single crochet, bead single crochet, single crochet, bead single crochet, single crochet, chain 1, turn.

This row only has two beads and they are offset from the beads in the three-bead rows to create a pattern.  You could change when you make the bead stitches to create a different pattern if you want.

9) Repeat Rows 3, 4, 5, 6 until you've used all the beads.  Below is what your bracelet will look like after your first repeat of Row 3.

10) Last Row - Single crochet in each stitch across (total 6 single crochet), chain 3, turn.

11) Button Hole - skip 5 stitches, single crochet in last stitch of previous row.  You might want to wait to finish off your bracelet until you can test if the button hole is big enough for your button.  If it's too big or too small, adjust the number of chains.  The important part is that your chain starts at one corner and your single crochet is at the other corner.  This makes a clean edge with no poky or floppy bracelet corners.

To finish off, make a chain and pull through a big loop.  Cut the loop and pull the cut end completely through the last chain.  Pull tightly.  Use the needle to weave the end into the bracelet.  Trim off any extra thread.

12) You are going to attach the button using the 10-inch tail of thread you left at the beginning of your bracelet.  Use the needle to weave in the spaces between the stitches of the first row.  First come from the back to the front in the first space, from the front to the back in the second space, and then from the back to the front in the third space.  Your needle will now be coming up in the space just to the right of the middle of the bracelet.

13) Pull the thread tight to gather the stitches together, then thread the button by coming from behind to the front.

14) Next, go through the button from the front to the back.  Thread the needle through the spaces of the rest of the row just like you did the first half of the row.

15) Pull the thread tight to gather all the stitches.  This will make a clean edge free of poky, floppy corners on this end, too.  Make a knot (just like a normal embroidery knot: half-way insert the needle behind a thread in the bracelet, wrap the thread from the needle around the needle twice, pull the needle through the wrapped thread).  Weave in the end and trim the excess thread.

16) That's it!  You're done.

Let me know if you have any questions or you find any typos. :)

Thats very generous to share the pattern and allow to let people sell their results :-) I made something quite similar (at least the idea) for my little sister earlier this summer. I especially love the fastness of the project and that its washable :-) I went for a very simple llo for the bracelet and therefore made a beaded necklace to go with it. If you like, take a look:

Just noticed that for some commenters, the hyperlinked name doesn't work. If you try Anna and Laura, you'll see that we don't have a blogger account, and our hyperlink doesn't work -- unless you know to remove part of the url that shows up in the address bar. I simply entered my url with www in my previous post and in this one I'm trying without www. Have you come across this before?

When I was younger (6 yrs. old) my mother had a friend (65 yrs old) that taught me to do something similar. Instead, you work the crocheting in the round so that the beads are on the outside of a 'tube'. You start with 4 ch and join to form a ring. As you work your round you pull up a bead so that there are four beads to a 'layer'. Eventually you will see a spiral tube forming. After you have reached the desired length it is finished off and clasped.. I make them all the time as gifts and have sold them over the years. The beads that I was taught to use are smaller - not a seed bead...They are just big enough to string on crochet cotton no.10. They really are beautiful!

Hi Futuregirl!
As a newbie crocheteer I started the bracelet last night with help from a friend who knows lots of crafts. I use thread nr. 10 and a needle 1,75 mm (don't know what US size it is).
It's the first time I'm crocheting something so small, but it works for me and I like it a lot! I can finish this cutie right in time for a festival I'm attending tomorrow. When I held a crochet hook for the first time I'd never thought I'd be able to make something like this myself so soon, but I could and that's thanks to your clear description!

Thanks a bunch for sharing this!

Best wishes, Pauline

Hey futuregirl!

I loved your technique! Being that I am an artist, I see so many uses for this pattern. Why, it could even be incorporated into a handbag (with a long strap). Was thinking of running out to get some macrame cord, instead of the crochet thread, and incorporated different type of beads into it (the bracelet, that is).

Anyway, thanks alot, because my Grand-daughters would really love something different like these. Perfect to put with their Christmas presents. I'll also have to try and figure out a way to show you a necklace I designed (in my MOM's crochet stitch -- which was from Portugal). Everytime I use this, people always stop me to compliment. For me, though, it is a rememberance of some wonderful memories with my MOM, before she went home to be with the LORD. The stitch resembles a flower, and I've taught it to a few people.

Your bracelet could also become a necklace -- same wideth -- longer length, or even an anklet.

Thanks so much for sharing!! I just loved the graphics. They are great, and whomever did the photography should be commended.

Thanks alot!! By the way, if you decide to make it into a necklace, try using extenders at the base. I am a professional beader, and love to do really different stuff. By an extender, I would mean maybe even some leave beads (co-ordinated with the top beads).

For myself, also, I will not use a button, because (it's so easy to come undone -- even if you use a button stitch on the closure). I be think'n a larger size jumpring/with a lobster claw closure (plated is fine). You just gave me a brainstorm, this would look great with a metallic thread, with Cloisonne Beads. The look could further be enhanced even with Clay Beads.

Listen to me going on!!! I always get carried away! Ha! Ha! I am what is categorized as a Weaving Beadaholic, and your crocheting has encouraged me to do some creative work in this area.

I am a very humble person, but do enjoy encouraging creativity in others. You are a gracious person, because you have touched alot of people with this creativity. I'll have to definitely do something for you, and forward it. So, I will keep in touch!!!!

Thank you so much,

DIANA

P.S. My newest project is almost completed, and after that I'll be working on these (with five (5) grand-daughters to surprise. Can't wait!!!!!

I especially love how you've given tips on how to give a nicely-finished look (no pokey or floppy ends)...as I've been having problems with that since I recently began making these types of bracelets. I love the pattern but since I'm a beginner I wish it had more of the little details. I had no idea what size Crochet thread to use or what size beads to use. I am essentially winging it from a beginner stand point and it got a lil frustrating :(. But I do love the pattern and thank you for it.
1/21/2011 7:14 PM

futuregirl replied ...
Maria ... I'm sorry my tutorial has you feeling lost! You can use any size thread and any size beads (as long as the thread you pick fits through the bead holes). The thread will have a hook-size recommendation on it. I probably used a 4.0mm hook, size 10 crochet thread. If you already have the thread, you can take a little piece to the craft store and use it to find beads with the right sized holes. You can also use buttons instead of beads ... anything with a hole. Let me know if you have more questions. :)

isn't there a way to just print the pattern and not all the comments, what a waste of paper and ink
3/20/2011 5:47 PM

futuregirl replied ...
Tinker ... There are a couple ways you could have accomplished this.

(1) Select "print preview" and see what pages have the information you want. In your print dialog box, enter those pages in the "page range"

(2) Use your mouse to select the part of the page you want to print. In your print dialog box under "print range" select "selection".

You can do both of these things for any web page you happen to be on, not just my website.

If you ever forget to only print what you want and you start seeing pages of comments spitting out of your printer, you can always hit the cancel button and it will stop printing.

Hope that helps.

Thank you SO much for the VERY clear instructions! This is a beautiful project!

This year was my daughter's teacher's first year teaching and she has been such an incredible teacher (as, I am sure she will continue to be) that I felt like a complete DOLT for forgetting "teacher appreciation day"!

I put this together this afternoon and just HAD to share the results! My daughter picked out the colors and I made a button out of a steel washer and a bead to close it up. I thought it turned out lovely!

Your tutorial is excellently done. I read the text portion and understood the instructions. When I came to the detailed instructions with the photos, I was amazed! Any child who crochets can make your bracelet easily.
Thank you so very much for a wonderful project for little girls... and for big girls. As the kids say, YOU ROCK!

I am a pretty experienced crochet maniac, and I am just recently getting into doing other crafts with my crochet stitches.

I truly appreciate this tutorial because of how vividly it instructs to add beads to a simple crochet pattern. (For those of us who try to visualize how a stitch will end up before doing it, bead-crochet can seem a little confusing) I also have picked up MANY beads over the years that are a *little* too big to use in beading projects but would look great in this project.

You have just given me this year's christmas/birthday gifts for friends and family. So easy, and beautiful. My 3-year old daughter already treasures the one I made her. Thank you!

Hi Alice: I am attempting to make the crochet bead bracelate. I purchased little beads (they look the same size as your photo) but only very fine cotton thread could be put through with a tiny needle. When I start to crochet it is way too tiny. What size beads and crochet cotton did you use? Thank you.

I tried making the bracelet and it was very easy to do after I went back and reread the directions. Instead of using the button, I used a larger bead that matched the ones I used on the bracelet. It seems to be holding good. The next one I make I may trying using a D hook instead. Thanks for the pattern.

Hi!! I loved making this bracelet. I've made two now. The first one I did just like yours and it turned out perfect! For the second one, I made it the same way except I sewed on a jump ring and a lobster clasp. I have pictures here:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/101312577/amber-crochet-beaded-bracelet

At the end (before finishing off) I decreased evenly each row to kind of make a triangle. Then I just sewed on the clasp.

I absolutely loved your tutorial! The only problem for me is that I have a difficult time working stitches into the tiny crochet thread. Instead, I used your guidelines to turn it into long wrap pieces that can be worn as multi-wrap bracelets or as necklaces.

You do an amazing job of making the steps clear, and explaining exactly how to do each thing. It's a rare talent to possess! Even without the photos, any beginner could easily pick this up and understand. Kudos to you for all your hard work, and thank you for being so generous to share this with others. :)

Shirley ... You are correct British crocheters use different names for these stitches. I write my blog using the American names for the stitches since I live in the USA. I'm so glad you like my pattern.

Hi future girl, this is gorgeous. Can I ask a question about working single crochet rows in the flat? Am I right that when working flat in single crochet you work into the first stitch and at the end of the row the single crochet turning chain of the previous row is your last stitch of the row? I just know you will know the answer to this and I just want to be sure I am doing this basic stitch correctly, thanks x
7/23/2013 1:42 PM

futuregirl replied ...
Linda ... Great question! It depends on the pattern. They should tell you. In my pattern, I have you make one chain (sometimes called a turning chain) between rows, but I then say "sc in each stitch across" which means "make one sc in each sc of the row before"

Sometimes patterns will have you start a row with a chain (one or more) and then you'll crochet into the top of it as if it were a stitch when you make the next row.

Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

I'd love to try this, but just wasted a ton of paper and ink trying to print out the pattern. I finally stopped the printer without the pattern. There must be a way to print the pattern without the comments, but if there is I can't find it. Any suggestions?
11/23/2013 6:06 AM

futuregirl replied ...
Deb Gauthier ... There are a couple ways to accomplish this.

(1) Select "print preview" and see what pages have the information you want. In your print dialog box, enter those pages in the "page range"

(2) Use your mouse to select the part of the page you want to print. In your print dialog box under "print range" select "selection".

(3) In the "print range", enter only page 1. If that doesn't get all the info you need, then print again and enter only page 2 in the "print range". Continue until you've printed only the pages you need.

You can do both of these things for any web page or document you happen to have open, not just my website.

Hope that helps. :)
