Working On The Fennec Fox

My new featured craft project is a fennec fox stuffie.
Talk about a long term project.  I've been working on the fennec fox for over a year.  I'm not sure when I started it exactly, but I do remember I was feeling really really guilty about not having it done last November.

Stuffies take a lot of focus, and I feel like I get my free time in chunks of time too small to do the good work I want to do.  So instead of working on the stuffie, I'll do a bazillion swatches or knit a scarf or knit another scarf ... oh, boy, you see where this is going.  I've done a year's worth of crafting without doing much on the fox at all.

But when I think about working on it, I think about how pulling out the felt and the floss makes a big mess.

And I think about how cutting the shapes just right takes hours and stitching the pieces together takes hours.

My last crafting session that I devoted to the fox a couple weeks ago was 4 hours straight.  That's a long time!  But in that 4 hours I sketched, cut, pinned, and sewed just that little face.  And the face isn't even close to being done.

Gah.  I feel like a big whiner. :)  I totally want to make this.  I know it sounds like I don't want to make it.  And sometimes it *seems* and *feels* like I don't want to make it.  But I do!  I really do!  Not only because it's being asked for by my biggest crafty supporter and the best guy ever (Andrew, my husband), but also because if I can get half the awesome I have in my head into this stuffie it's going to be super amazing.

So I made it my featured craft project.  I'll see a reminder to work on it every day in my to do notebook.  And I'm going to try to do enough work on it so I can post about it once a week until it's done.  I don't want to let another Thanksgiving pass with a franken-fox's pieces parts littering my WIP pile. :)

I want to hold his little body high and yell "It's Alive!"

And then I want to crochet myself a blanket. ;)

This is the type of project that makes me want to have a dedicated non-knit/crochet/etc. craft night, because it is too easy for me to put my sewing projects aside for the easiness of just knitting something new.

I'm game to work along with you. I have a couple of dragons that need to be done by Christmas.

I LOVE your fox! And, I really love the peek into your design process. I find most bloggers don't share how they get over artist's block, or how they stay motivated on a specific project... So, i really appreciate it! Thanks!

At least you are not giving up on your project! You are right about softies - they do take focus and a lot of thought and trial and error - mostly error - I do not find making then relaxing. So when i make a softie, I make it because i really, really, really want it!

Now, of course , you have peaked my curiosity and I can't wait to see it done!

I feel your pain. I have pleather motercycle dog jacket I started in July and I need hours at a time to get through the remaining steps. In 3 hours I made a template and put snaps on just 2 pockets. Sometimes I just don't have the time or patience to get through detailed oriented stuff. So I start another project. Hopefully it'll get done by Christmas lol
