Hey There!

One of my favorite things about blogging is talking to you.  For real.  I've made so many friends this way.  And the day I can't respond to my comments the way I like to will be a very sad day for me.  In an effort to ward off that day as long as possible, I built an admin page for myself to make managing comments easier.

The page lists all the comments that have been left on my blog that need to be approved (your first comment has to be approved ... after you have one approved comment the rest automatically show up) AND lists all the comments that I haven't replied to yet.

Last night I finally caught up with all the comments that were left in June.  Gah!  I have a hundred + more to go through.  For sanity's sake, I only show the most recent 100 on the admin page.  Truth be told, I'm not replying to EVERY comment because after more than a month, it gets a little creepy to reply, but I know there are questions and such hidden in all those neglected comments that should be answered, so I'm going to go through them all, eventually.

In this screen shot, all the comments you can see have been approved already (that's the first, disabled checkbox).  Then I have "ANSWER ME" and "DELETE ME" check boxes.  I can check any of the boxes for a bunch of comments and click the "Save Changes" button to save everything at once.

Super handy for those days I wake up and "low interest rate loans" has commented on my blog 20 times ... which is about three times a week.  I don't know why they keep doing it, because they don't get approved and they never show up on my website.  Perhaps they think I'll get tricked into getting a loan? Who the hell knows.  I used to have to delete each of these individually on my Edit Comment page, or log into my database and delete them in bulk there.  This is so much better!

A while back I built myself fancy comment reply functionality.  I can reply to your comment *within* the comments and (1) the reply gets emailed to you automatically, and (2) the comment shows up under your comment in the comment section as an answer to you.  When I do this, your comment gets marked as "is answered."  But since not all comments require a reply, on this page I can check the "ANSWER ME" box.  The comment then gets marked as "is answered" and comes off the list.

I've had a pencil-drawn mock up of this page for ... a long time.  I'm so happy to have it completed finally. :)  It really is helpful.  Before I managed my comments by keeping unanswered comments in an email box, but then I'd have to be at home to answer comments.  Now I can log into my admin from anywhere and say hi to you!

In the list I also have links to edit the individual comment, edit the post the comment is for, visit the post the comment is for, and visit your website.  It's my comment command center!  Is there anything it's missing?  If you have any good ideas for functionality?  Are you even still reading the WORDY, NERDY post?

Alice you did an amazing job. It just occurred to me why it can be a blessing to have the blog system written by yourself. You can CONTROL everything.
There is no doubt its your near to perfect comment command center. Thank you for giving us the peek into your comment command center. I just want to be able to do the same some day in my life for my own blog. Not because I'm going to receive this many comments on my blog (*wink*) but because I want such CONTROL!

skhan ... You said it! Control! Also responsibility. :) If something isn't working, then I'm the poor sap that has to fix it. Same with new functionality. Luckily, I don't mind responsibility. :) The comment situation is the biggest of the reasons I decided to build the blog. That and the fact that blogger was not really supporting FTP blogs very well. Thank goodness I built it when I did, because they recently got rid of FTP blogs all together.

I do wish I had the skillz to do that. I'm pretty content generally with Blogger, but replying to comments is one area where they're sadly lacking. I don't get a ton of comments or anything, so I don't exactly need a big fancy command centre like yours (which does sound pretty awesome, though. Good job.), but it would be nice to be able to reply properly, whether by email or in a nested kind of situation. All I can really do is comment after someone else comments, with no notification to them that I've done so, so they may or may not ever even see it.

Totally reading the nerdy post, and utterly amazed that you can create all that stuff yourself. I *just* figured out how to single space paragraphs and edit the tiny HTML code to make it a instead... after hours of pulling my hair out! You're a renaissance woman, that's for sure.

Michelle ... Good for you for learning new stuff! At least I learned all this for work, so I've made money with this knowledge.

I personally think you are brilliant... and I read the WHOLE thing.

You should totally sell this to typepad. I could use some help like this.

No need to reply.

HUGS!

Lollychops ... Gah! So, instead of replying to your sweet comment I thought, "I'll go leave a comment on her blog," which I did ... and then I spent many many many more minutes looking at all your gorgeous photos and circles and dimensional tape and blue hands and piles of white buttons and ... omg! It was a trap! ;) I actually had to WILL myself not to click the "nextly" link at the bottom of the page. You are 800% amazing, darling.

Blue Farfallina ... It's so cool that you're figuring out new stuff, though! Maybe throw stuff instead of pulling out your hair ... so you don't go bald. ;)

I so loved this post...that sounds like the most awesome interface ever. I love love love the nerdy code/UI talk. It's like describing a chocolate cream pie to an emotional eater.

On features suggestions, would it be of any use to you to be able to sort the list by commenter (email, IP, whatever)? I'm always finding myself wanting to look up a comment from someone months ago and it takes forever to find it.

Ooooh, and you totally just gave me an idea on how to prevent those not-quite-finished drafts from slipping into oblivion.

Karen ... Well, you hit the nail on the head. Actually, right now I have no sorting functionality at all. If it's not approved or not answered, it shows up. Otherwise, I don't have access to it (other than through an edit link only I can see next to the comment on the blog itself). I'm also just displaying them in the order they were left. I'd like to add the ability to see them grouped by post in addition to the things you suggested. And why not a text search, while we're at it? I'm sure I'll have this all done by *next* summer. ;)

You are my hero! This is seriously amazing. I can think up these things, such as "oh! there should totally be a way that I can do this and this and that" but having the skill set to actually make it come to fruition (o0o0, I just used the word fruition) is something that in the computer science/coding realm I am seriously lacking.
