Craft Bar Debriefing

Craft Bar was even more awesome than I thought it would be!  And I thought it would be pretty awesome. :)  As soon as people started showing up, I had three women come right over and say they wanted to learn how to crochet.

Teaching Crochet

I've never taught anyone to crochet before, and I hadn't given any thought to how to go about it.  I never realized how hard it is to just start chaining.  In a way, I was learning right along with them.

They were all great students and I had them single crocheting back and forth pretty quickly.  One woman (top left) learned so fast that I taught her double crochet, too ... except at first, I taught her incorrectly ... but once I figured out that I skipped a step when I taught her the stitch, she was crocheting like a pro.

Later in the night, an experienced crocheter started asking me some questions, and I ended up teaching her foundation single crochet (WIN!), and there were about three other women who came over and started learning crochet, too.  I also was helping one woman with her knitting.  How crazy is that?

One thing I need to remember is SMILE!  Sister Diane or June (maybe both of them?) gave me the advice to smile ... and I sort of forgot.  At first I was so absorbed in trying to figure out how-in-the-world to teach them to crochet that I forgot to smile.  Once I got the hang of it, I was more free with the YAYs and encouragement.  I hope I wasn't too serious and frowny.

Friends and Photos

I barely had time to chat with my friends Sonya and Bethany (lower right corner) or the two cool co-workers that came.  And it wasn't until the end of the night that I even thought to pull out my camera and take photos.  Those are the only four photos I took.  I definitely need to work on the documentation end of things.

Name Tag

I ended up wearing the Alice Merlino - Crochet Badass name tag.  What's funny is that the only people who read it were my friends and coworkers that already knew what it said.  Everyone else *noticed* the name tag and assumed, correctly, that I was an instructor, but they didn't actually read it. :)  Well, maybe they read it, but they didn't comment on it.

Need More Craft Face Time

I love teaching crochet!  I'm so excited about the next Craft Bar.  I am also determined to find other ways to get more face-to-face craft time in.  Once a month is not enough!  I walk by all the empty store fronts in San Francisco thinking that there has to be at least one of these people who would let us have a craft night there.  Or maybe I could find a business owner that would let us use their space after hours.  Something!  Somewhere!

Ah, to be there. For some reason, I've never managed to figure out crochet (and not for lack of trying).

hooray for teaching crochet! like everything, it gets easier to teach it the more times you do it.

you might check to see if a local yarn shop has a knit/crochet night that already exists, those can be a fun way to get craft "face-time". In fact, if you are interested in teaching, I bet you could even set up some crochet classes at your LYS.

linda p ... Good to know it will get easier. :) I'm thinking of putting together a little one-page instruction sheet for them to take with them, or use while I'm helping other people. When all 6 of them (plus the one knitter) were asking for help at the same time, I know some of them were waiting a long time to ask me their questions.

I'm definitely going to look into LYS class-teaching ... I have an *in* at one of the stores ... but I need to wait for my schedule to open up and get a little more consistent first.

I spent some time looking for an existing craft night, and only one LYS hosts one at the cafe across the street from their studio ... but they are out in East Jebip. Other craft nights in the city seem to have fizzled. Maybe I'm on a fool's errand? (no! no! no!)

And, I'll be completely honest, I have never once felt comfortable in a LYS. Not in Philadelphia. Not in San Francisco. Not in New York. Even the time I bought two $10 hanks of cotton (my most expensive per-yard purchase to date), I got snobby service and raised eyebrow look when I turned around after paying (my friend saw it). It's like they can smell the stink of crochet on me. What's funny is I bought the cotton yarn to knit with. :)

What I really wish, is that I could open a yarn and craft supply store full of nice, fun people who are enthusiastic about all sorts of making. And part of the store would be a huge space to sit down and craft. That's what I wish.

Teaching crochet was a little tricky for me the first time, too. I found that holding my own hook and yarn while describing the steps worked well, so the person learning could hear my words, see what I was doing, and try it for themselves. That covers all types of learning. (Sorry, the teacher in me came out for a bit!)
4/11/2010 1:53 PM

futuregirl replied ...
Carmen ... I totally did that! I had a hook and ball of yarn in my hands the whole time. :) A couple times, I had to take their work and hold it just to see where their next stitch was, because I couldn't "see" it in their hands. I was very nice about that, though.

Oh, you just reminded me! Many of them were missing the first/last stitch of the row. A stitch marker would totally come in handy! I'll take a bunch with me next time for them! That will also help with the recognition of what the top of a stitch looks like. :)

And I need an apron!

Really wish there was a night I could make it. I was thinking, oh maybe when Alan takes his next vacation. Then he can watch the kids and I can go. But I think Nathan's still too young for me to leave him for a long period of time unless Alan's sitting conveniently and oh so bored in the car outside.

futuregirl replied ...
Kuky ... Yeah, sitting in the car might not be so much fun for Alan. :)

Sounds like you had a fun time. I really enjoy that you have a nametag indicating that you are a crochet badass :) I don't understand why it's so hard to find people to help learn how to crochet. I have some experience with both knitting and crocheting. I went to 2 LYSs to try to find someone to help me with a crochet project. Out of all the staff at both of the LYSs, only one person had the skills to help me.
4/12/2010 1:03 AM

futuregirl replied ...
Emily ... I think that's the nature of LYSs. They are geared toward knitting. I'm glad you found someone to help you. :)

Way to go, Alice! That has to be the most fun! I have always wanted to start an after-school crochet club at my school to teach it to the students, but it hasn't worked out. :(
Good luck finding more face-to-face time, I bet none of us gets enough of that - I know I don't!!

nancymoo ... I hope your after-school club works out eventually. I know a middle school teacher and they HAVE to start an afterschool club. She picked yo-yo-ing. How awesome is that?

I understand why you didn't laugh much, it sounds that you had a wonderful time, but you were a teacher for the first time!!! And teaching, nowadays, is a bit stressing... a teacher never laughs in the first class, otherwise the pupils will show no respect for her! :)
I'm just kidding here, I believe you had much fun there since you want to do this often. I think it's a great idea!

I just knew you were born to teach! And I also just knew you were going to love the experience of teaching at the Craft Bar!

Go with your inspiration! Expand the need for more "craft face time". People need outlets for expression and sharing the creative spirit. And... people need YOU!

pam ... Yes! I've always had sort of nebulous crafty goals (more! better! funner!) but teaching is so awesome that I'm getting more focused. Whatever direction my crafting goes, it's definitely going to involve teaching and getting together in real life.

Wow, Craft Bar sounds like it was a lot of fun! Maybe I'll get to go to one of these things one day soon. I'll have to start looking in my area, but it would be nice if I actually knew some crafters.

I'm totally with you there about teaching needlecrafts like crochet. Until I started teaching some co-workers crochet and knitting a few years ago, I didn't realize how much I took for granted because I'd been doing it since elementary school. I had one friend who struggled so much with casting on that it took many lessons for us to get to the actual knitting process!

I am very happy that I've come across this blog, and I've added you. Looking forward to more! XD

A craft bar? That sounds like fun.
Yep teaching can be a bit tricky but it is really fun. My nieces are eager to start to learn crocheting and I will teach them in their summer vacation when they don't have much school work on their minds.

http://www.themakelounge.com/ - Just for a bit of inspiration - the woman that opened this has been open just over a year and had to take over another building AS WELL to keep up with the demand for classes. This is my dream too! One day...

Love the 'stink of crochet' very funny. We have a drop in knitting and crochet and embroidery night at a local bar. They reserve a table and the lady that organises it has a basket full of beginner kits for anyone who's drinking and wants to see what's going on or if you have a froiend who wants to try out but has no supplies. It's brilliant

That is so awesome that you wore the name tag. You totally should have introduced yourself with your well-deserved title..."Hi, I'm Alice, and I specialize in crochet badass-ery...how can I help you?"

So glad you had such a great time! And I think you should go for it on finding a place to host a craft night on a more regular basis. I'm sure you could find plenty of people who would love to do it :)

ps - finally made a dirty dishwasher girl...have I told you how awesome your patterns are?!

I'm in awe - I'm struggling to teach my friend how to crochet. She does it fine while I'm there, then disappears off home and does all sorts of weird stuff. On the bright side, she taught herself half-double crochet. That wasn't what she was supposed to be doing, but still...

Maybe I should send her up to San Francisco for some lessons from the Crochet Badass...
