I first read about steeks while browsing knitting books at the bookstore. A
steek is a CUT YOU MAKE IN YOUR KNITTING. When I read that, I almost dropped the book.
At the time, I'd just learned how to knit and it would take me about 20 minutes to complete a knit row of 20 stitches. I couldn't imagine cutting my knitting. The thought made me ill.
The gist of it is that if you're knitting in the round, like on circular needles and doing something complicated like a fair isle sweater, it's easier and faster to just knit the body of the sweater as a tube up to the neck. Then you cut holes (steeks) and attach the arms there by picking up stitches and knitting them or sewing on already-knit sleeves.
Well, the ends of my crazy phone cozy were AWFUL ... loose, tight, knotty ... and I thought, hey, couldn't I just cut the edge off, like a steek?
I did some searches and found instructions that suggested that you sew along the edge where you're going to make the steek. So I did. then I cut off the awful edges.
Please forgive me, because I was doing this late at night and most of my photos were bad, but here's some up close photos to show you what I did.
It worked. But in my google searches, I saw another steek technique that I wanted to try. Next up: crochet steeks!
