Taking Out The Stabilizer

Snip snip snip.  Tear tear tear.  Picking at tiny bits of stabilizer with tweezers.  It's a lot more relaxing than it sounds.

*giggles* ... sometimes it's these sorts of tasks that mellow my brain and allow me to relax, so no surprise at all. :)

Sounds excruciating for me... My blood pressure racks up a notch at the idea of having to do that. I admire your patience with it!

It seems like the opposite of weaving in the ends of a crochet project. I think I would love it too!! :D

I actually love doing this. I have no idea why. It's extremely satisfying somehow.

Can't wait to see the finished product and read your thoughts on the eco-felt!

Your dragons look fantastic. :)

I was wondering if you had any updates on the 2009 "Use What You Have" Challenge, since it's half way through the year. Has it been difficult? I've been trying to cut back, too, it's been a little tough... especially whenever there's a sale...

Susie, I totally agree. Tearing off stabilizer is my favorite part of felt embroidery projects. I usually use a really small crochet hook to pick at all the little pieces - it's so satisfying! I also may be a freak.

I know this is a super old post. I remember reading it the first time, around. However, I have a question to ask. Do you always use stabilizer for embroidery projects? Does it only depend on the fabric you are embroidering upon?

The reason I ask is...I'm making a baby quilt and want to do some hand embroidery on it. Should I use stabilizer? I have machine embroidery stabilizer sheets - would those work for hand embroidery on quilting cotton?

Could I ask any more questions? (ha!)

LPQuilts ... OMG. I am such a heel for letting your question go unanswered for just a couple weeks shy of a year. Better late than never (maybe). If I use a pattern, I use stabilizer because that's what I trace the design onto. If I'm free-forming it, no tear-away stabilizer, but maybe something thick on the back to keep thin fabric from puckering (like normal stabilizer. The one nice thing about the thick stabilizer is that you don't need a hoop when you use it. Either way would definitely work for a quilt, although if you're permanently putting it on the back of the squares, you'll want to make the stabilizer the size of the square so the edges don't show (or use the dissolving stabilizer that disappears in the wash ... can't vouch for that, though, because I haven't used it).
