WTF Poncho

"Poncho" is one of a group of words that really makes my skin crawl.  It just rubs me the wrong way.  I think that's why I haven't mentioned the (ugh!) poncho I've been working on for the last 3-4 weeks.

I'm on version 5.1 right now.  Version 1 was a patternless circle thing which was terrible looking.  Version 2 was made after looking at a 1970s pattern where I accidentally changed the double crochet to single crochet ... which didn't work.  Version 3 was when I actually tried to follow the pattern, but I read it incorrectly.  Version 4 was me correctly interpreting the pattern and adding a little something that made it better, but then I realized that I didn't like the 1970s pattern after all.  Version 5.0 was partly my altered version of the 1970s pattern with a whole new thing, but it was still TOO MUCH.  Version 5.1 (so named because I didn't start completely over, I just frogged a little) was tweaked a little to keep it snug, and I think it's coming along nicely now.

Anyway.  For the last 4 weeks I've been dragging this around and working on it.  I think I could have crocheted an army of ponchos with all the actual hooking I've done.  Every time Andrew asks me what I'm working on I respond with a snarky comment because I can't bring myself to say "poncho."

So, what are the alternatives to that dreaded word?  Are there any already out there?  Can you help me come up with something?  Maybe even a new word.  I kinda like "bundler."  "Torso cozy" sounds really disgusting, which makes me like it, but I don't think I'd enjoy saying "torso cozy" any more than "poncho" ... unless people recoiled when I said it.  :)

I'll give you more details in the next poncho-post when I have more of it done.

The title of my post is a parody of a parody.  Around these parts we've been getting pummelled with commercials for Snuggie ("a blanket with sleeves").  It's a stupid commercial for a stupid product, and it's been totally annoying me.  You gotta love youtube, because someone posted the commercial with a new voiceover that is HILARIOUS.  Watch the original Snuggie commercial (if you haven't seen it) and the WTF Blanket parody (NSFW) for maximum funniest.

I was going to request you call it a snuggie until I got to the end of your post! And that's only because we find that commercial incredibly stupid. That product is the epitome of why our country is the way it is. Stupid product with stupid people to buy them. I found that parody a few weeks ago and got a good laugh out of it!

My MiL calls then Parkas but I like Capelet.
oh and thank you for the funny. We don't have cable so I'm not subjected to sh*t like this on a regular basis. I almost peed.

Sarape. Sorry. Misspelled.

Oops. Actually it doesn't matter. Both spellings are A-OK.

Ha! & as far as the Snuggie, did you see the NY times article on it? A guy just wore it around town & documented the reactions. & the boyfriend keeps swearing he's going to get one just to horrify me.

I hate the Snuggie more than I hate the word poncho. There's a great ShamWow parody out there, too...

What about "oknop"? LOL. (I tried spelling "the p word" backwards, but it didn't work). Seriously though, you could call it a "no-button wrap" or "no-button shawl". How about a "shoulder cozy" or "shozy"?

As much as I try, I can not seem to keep the patience needed to make a poncho. One of these days. And, I agree...the word is strange.

I don't have a synonym for the dreaded p-word. I'm just wondering what other words make your skin crawl. "Nude hose" - as in pantyhose - makes me throw up in the back of my throat.

Snuggie-what an odd and completely pointless thing to have o.0
I usually just call a poncho a shawl, most people seem to know what that is. I have met a lot of people that don't know what a poncho is....

I didn't hear of a snuggie until a day or too ago. It is the lazy person's version of a blanket! I like shawl, caplet, woman's cowl????

How about "seamless wrap", "seamless shawl" or seamless something like it. Seamless crochet seems to be very much in fashion this days.
I really find the original snuggie commercial even funnier (although quite disturbing) than the parody.

This is more for amusement than to be helpful, but in my family we call them "Horse rugs". They're bigger than ones average poncho, though. I should pull it out and take photos some day, mine has little pom pom animals and ducks and stuff on it, my aunt made it for me years ago.

How about yarmina ( from pashmina) or crochemia

Thank you for the funny! Since I am in the Netherlands, I hadn't seen the commercial or the parody, and they both cracked me up to the point where I was crying with laughter...

sorry, all the names i'm coming up with either sound naughty, or are purposely so. i blame your 'torso cozy', & not my angelic little mind.

I think the replacement word would depend on what it is about the p-word that you dislike - is it simply the way it sounds? or does it remind you of something bogus? maybe the work sounds like another word that means something bogus? I think that would greatly affect what the replacement could/should be. I have to say that it reminds me of two things: Clint Eastwood and Poncho Villa (which I enjoy saying...) :D

What about circular shawl? Or 360 shawl. Or mod sleeveless sweater?

I think WTF Poncho takes a bit of the edge off of "poncho."

I have to tell you, I'm not such a fan of these bad boys. We can thank the 70s for that. So I won't be much help picking out a name. But if you could identify what it is about the WTF that you really like, then perhaps a name would suggest itself?

Good luck!

HA! I LOATHE the P-word too! I have one that I love to wear in the spring and fall, and I can't stand to call it by name because the thing is so pretty but saying the name makes me feel like I'm 7 again, and NOT in a good way.

I vote CAPELET.

You could go with shawl, wrap or similar - but I _love_ torso cozy and shall be adopting it immediately.

I would vote for Capelet or wrap, I'm not keen on ponchos either, but a capelet sounds cute and should reduce the amount of snark by a fraction or two.

Laura ... I don't have a pattern written up. Basically, I just made 3 stitches at the back and front to make the point. Maybe that helps you?

Laura ... Start with a hole big enough for your head. One row dc. One row sc. Back and forth. Increase two stitches at the middle front on the sc rows. Increase two stitches at the middle back on the sc rows.
