Treasure From Chinatown

Thread crocheting is pretty slow-going, so I was thinking of breaking down and buying some yarn ... but then I remembered the colorful plastic twine I'd seen in Chinatown.
I hit the jackpot at the first dollar-ish store I stopped at.  I got four colors of this awesome plastic twine.  It feels like it's made out of plastic bags.  It's super-strong end-to-end, but it splits really easily side-to-side.
They were 99 cents each, so I've added $4.34 to my 2009 Challenge total in the left column.   I wish I'd sprung the extra 99 cents for the red twine, too.  I'd like having a full set.
Two of them have this parrot label.  Can anyone read the Chinese?
The other two have this bird label.

I'll tell you all about crocheting with plastic twine in my next post.

Wow this twine is so familiar. I'm sure we had it in our house growing up. And the Chinese characters are parrot mark something and golden bird something. I googled it. :)

I bought some red and green twine very similar to this a few years ago at a local 99 cent store. I was thinking of knitting a stocking for the front door with it instead of using regular yarn. Haven't started it yet, though... maybe next year!

alice, i think when you move to a new city, you should be able to spend at least $5 exploring all of its wonders! your purchases are super-thrifty and its ALMOST the end of the year! :)

Very cool. I asked my husband and he affirmed what Kuky said. The last character is brand. So, basically, they say the exact same thing in Chinese as they do in English.

Kuky ... Thanks for checking for me. :)

Susan ... Great idea to use it for outdoor items! They'd be easy to keep clean.

Sister Diane ... Have you used it before?

EmilyWools ... Well, I agree, but the challenge thinks otherwise. ;)

Misty ... Good that we have two people confirming what the Chinese says. I wonder why they aren't all the same brand, since they are clearly the same stuff. Hmmm.

Wow, that's really pretty. I've worked with plastic bags before, but it would be cool to actually be able to pick the color rather than working with what the store gives me.

Hi, im from asia and we actually use the plastic twine as almost an all around rope, like to tie boxes and carry it around. I never thought of it as crochet or knitting material. Interesting thing.

Hello, I can't read Chinese but I'm studying Japanese. So for the golden bird name, the first kanji or character stands for gold or money, the second one for bird and the third one for brand. By the way, I love your blog. Kisses from Barcelona.

yup the chinese characters translate literally into the english on the stickers. so its parrot mark brand and golden bird brand. its actually raffia string. easily available in any hardware store here in malaysia. we use it for all sorts of things from tying books together to setting up tents :)

I'd love to have some of this twine, but there isn't a store near me (Texas) that sells it and I can't find it online either. :(

Lizabeth ... Check your local dollar stores. It's the kind of thing they would have. I just did some google searches and I could only find it wholesale.
