Sweater Obsession

It's sorta nuts how much I want to make myself a sweater.  It's been getting a little chilly here at night and I was thinking that a little sweater would be nice.  I really love Ponchi, but he's in storage.

Plus, Ponchi is a little too embarrassing to wear out in public.

When I visited the storage facility, instead of grabbing Ponchi, I grabbed a cone of worsted weight ecru cotton yarn.  Why not whip up a top-down, cardigan just like Ponchi in cream?  Then, maybe, I could wear it out in public without being so self conscious. ;)

OK, so I started out with a LARGE hook (6.0mm, I think) which is what I used to make Ponchi.  The stitch was way too loosey-goosey, and so holey that it wouldn't keep me much warmer than my light jacket.

Plus, I wasn't sure exactly how I was going to attach buttons or a closure to such a flimsy, holey garment.  The hook size worked great for the terry yarn I used to make my poncho, but it wasn't so good for the worsted cotton.

I changed to a 5.0mm hook.  Much better ...  I'm doing alternating rows of dc and sc ... but the resulting fabric has such a stiff hand, the cardi feels like it's made out of cardboard.  It fits perfectly ... but it's dense, like armor.

I am sooooooooo frustrated!  I want to make myself a sweater so badly.  But I'm using a heavy, utilitarian yarn to make something I want to be swingy and soft.  It's crazy.  I'm totally obsessed.  I just don't have the right yarn.  Argghh!

I'm gonna have to frog it and ... um, I don't know ... twiddle my thumbs until January 1, 2010. Ha!  I want to buy some awesome Fine Weight cotton and make myself a @#*&% sweater.  The good thing about the challenge is that I'm gonna know EXACTLY what I want to buy once I can start spending money again.

Maybe I should start filling my online shopping cart now.

And maybe go buy a heavier jacket.

emilyWools ... Yes, knitting is something that may or may not be on next year's agenda. But I still think this yarn is too thick to be the cardi I want, even knitted.

Try doing the same stitch pattern, but crocheting into the BACK LOOPS only. This produces a less stiff, more drapey fabric.

I know the agony of working with the wrong yarn for the right project! I've had to take out a whole baby blanket before, because it just wasn't soft enough!

Now, I am very supportive of your challenge ~ and I understand the thrill of victory come December 31st! ~ but I have to ask...is it better to go buy a jacket or go buy some yarn? If you have to buy something, that is, why not yarn?

Gosh, that's a shame about that yarn. Hopefully you'll be able to make the sweater when there is still time to use it!

Can't wait to see what you come up with, I have so many projects to finish, but now *I* want a sweater. ha!

You're self control is amazing! I would have run out and bought the yarn. I keep telling myself I have enough fabric and yarn, but then I'm drawn to the craft store and I end up buying more.

I'm really loving the little shrug you have created. Instead of unpicking this why not add a little embellishment (a ribbon tie at the neck for example) and it would be perfect on summer evenings when you just need to cover your shoulders to keep off the chill.

Also I'm absolutely loving your blog....keep it up

That looks great so far! Hopefully you'll be comfy in it until you can get a softer yarn, but until then... it looks great...keep going! What stitch were you using, if you don't mind my asking.

Alice

You gave yourself a budget of $2 per month and have only spent a faction of it so use some for the yarn you want! Granted $15 for yarn may not get you very far but even if it only gets you one or two skiens you can get started on your sweater and stop feeling frustrated.

I think managing your money is great but I am a beliver in managing the unneccessary spending (e.g. buying fabric you do not need) and spending on the things you DO need or want (e.g. soft yarn for your sweater!).

Happy wise spending!

This probably is not that helpful, but I would take up knitting - it lies flatter and is more drapey (I'm sure that's a word...). I use crochet for blankets and bags etc. and knitting for stuff that will be worn. I think it's because crochet has more of a knotted texture.

I think you should wear ponchi in the meantime. Ponchi is so not embarrassing to wear. Besides - you're in San Francisco now. You'll have do wear something a whole lot crazier if you want to stand out :)

Good luck with it. You have been so good with your challenge. Enjoy your first purchases next year. I hope you don't get a shock with the prices after not buying anything for awhile. Happy days.

It might soften up and drape better after it's washed, maybe? It looks very cute as a shoulder warmer!

I can tell that once you find the yarn you need (& can buy), it'll be awesome. I know I wouldn't have the willpower to wait.

Check out the bamboo silk yarn from pattons. Most of the colours (the ones that have been dyed - not so much the ecru) are really soft and lovely. It might get you closer to the feeling you are trying for without moving to a lighter weight of yarn.
