Baby Alpaca Hat

A couple years ago I got some baby alpaca yarn for my birthday.  I used a good chunk of it on a hat and scarf, but the rest I've been hoarding.  I had one ball of cream left that is a great match for a scarf I have, so I decided to make a matching hat.

I started with the Pretty Puffs Slouchy Hat pattern.  Just like last time, I ended up with a teeny tiny hat, so I had to rip most of it out.

Then, on the second go, when I got to the puffs part, I realized that the fluffy yarn totally obscured the puffs.  You really couldn't see the puffs at all.  More ripping.  The fluffy yarn makes ripping out very difficult.  It gets stuck and the yarn breaks or I have to clip it to untangle it.   Such a pain!

On the third try I had to add some double crochet rows to accommodate my huge head.  Then, instead of the puffs, I skipped a stitch to create a mesh-looking row.  I did three mesh rows, three double crochet rows, then a single crochet band.

I actually ripped out the original band because I tried doing a *sc ch* band where the next row's sc is in the chain space, but it was too loose and didn't grip the giant-head.  So this hat is version 3.5.

Truth be told, I'd rip this whole thing out and redo it again if the yarn wasn't so finicky.  I'd make the round-flat part bigger, do more mesh rows throughout the hat, and make a slightly tighter band.  But as it is, I like the hat and it totally works to keep my head and ears warm on chilly nights.

I think it's really pretty :) I know what you mean about the complications of trying to rip it out though - it's such a pain when the yarn is so fiddly to use!

Well done for persevering though !

Oh, and by the way... you're so lucky to suit hats! I look like an idiot in every one I try, so as much as I love making them, I always have to give them away! x

It looks great on you.

I usually avoid fuzzy yarn, as ripping out usually plays a part in my knitting / crocheting...

Love the hat! I, too, have been blessed with a huge head (must be cause we're so smart).

Nice to have you back, Alice! I love the hat. I had the same thought progression as katie. How cute would a hat for a baby alpaca be? :D

Well done! One day I will learn to speak crocheter. This whole " *sc ch* band where the next row's sc is in the chain space" is so lost on me. I will just admire from afar until I can get my head around it.

I love the hat! I've been trying my hand at crochet the last couple days and it seems to be coming along quite well. I'm starting with a simple scarf!!

That looks so soft, do you have a source online for the yarn? We a network of crafters for our store and I'd love to see if we could get some hats made from the baby Alpaca yarn. Could you use it in a knitting machine or is it too unstable?

Vintage Vice ... I'm sure if you google Plymouth yarn, you can find a source. Mine was bought locally. I've never used a knitting machine, so I'm not sure how it would fare. Let me know if you try it out. :)

I have one skein of plymouth baby alpaca and its 125yds and recommends a size six needle, can I still use the puffy slouch hat pattern and come out with a hat? I have a small head. I actually made the slouchy hat in a truffle colored acrylic.

Ashley ... I don't know. Maybe! I had to modify the pattern a lot for my head, so I'm not sure if following it exactly would leave you enough yarn. :)

Can you please tell me the diameter of this hat you made?

the gauge for my yarn is 5.5st per inch so its really small I am wondering how many rows until I start the bubbles or mesh

Ashley ... I went to get my hat to measure it for you ... AND I CAN'T FIND IT! I just called a handful of stores and restaurants to see if I left it there. I'm going to walk over to Macy's and look through their lost and found right now. So sad!!!
