Knitting?

I've been feeling the pull to start knitting.

And then Strawberry emailed me a link to this owl sweater.   Oh, man.  The button eyes just kill me.  I've saved the free pdf pattern for my knitting future ...

** Edit: you can find the pattern here **

You and me both. Only I'm a complete beginner. As in, don't even know how to cast on. Do you, or any one else, know of good online resources for learning to knit?

haha, I was just about to tell you about the "hat version" of that pattern and I realized someone else has just posted the mitten version. I guess the pattern screams futuregirl to everyone!

Knitting would mean buying needles, does that fit into the budget? I am inspired by the $24 budget, I will be amazed if you can exercise the restraint. I can't seem to resist a yarn sale.

But if you can fit the needles in, it's always fun to learn a new skill! And you will still be the most amazing crocheter, so no worries!

I'm not a knitter (I'm new to crocheting...and love your helpful tutorials, by the way!)but that sweater is fabulous! I don't think you can live without making that!

I've only recently really learned to knit, but once I feel confident enough to make something as big as a sweater (and learn cables..), I can't imagine anything better to make. Thanks for posting the link; it's amazing!

Okay, so I did it. I have caught up on your blog. I am always a little sad whenever I do that because now I'll have to wait for posts one by one instead of being able to just, read as many as I want at one time.

Loving the blog and feeling super crafty these days. I'm going to be asking for a hoop and floss for Valentine's day (that makes me feel a little lame...lol). The wait is going to be agonizing though since I've recently found the most amazingly awesome hand embroidery patterns at http://www.urbanthreads.com

That sweater is amazing. If only I could figure out how to get past row one.... Maybe I'll have my knitting whizz 8 year old son help me out!

I'm a crocheter who just started knitting. I find that it makes some yarns look better (like those novelty yarns that are sooooo pretty but look too busy when I crochet with them), and the fabric feels better usually. But I only need so many scarves/hats, whereas making unusual sculptural crochet objects is endlessly fascinating :)

I LOVE that sweater!!! Knitting is really that hard to learn. You can find a lot of resources online for pretty much everything. If you're looking for good books to get patterns from look for "Stitch N Bitch" books. They have really cute patterns in there and also many techniques. I've knitted a few sweaters for my daughter out of those books! Good luck!

This owl sweater has gotten me so excited. I do not knit or crochet but I've wanted to learn either for so long now. My mom has been knitting her whole life and i learned a little from her as a child. She knows i love owls and i emailed her the sweater. Well, she got very excited about it and said that we could try it together but that she felt it might be a little difficult for a beginning project.

Alice, is this pattern available and if so could you send it along to me?...or the link? I really think this is the inspiration i need to get me knitting. Now if i could only just get my Mom to move from florida to north carolina! :)

This owl sweater is hooting your name Alice...I can hear all there little hoots!!!!

Wow!!!!!! I heart owls, too and this is amazing. Funny because I just posted about these vintage craft magazines with macrame owl necklaces in them on my blog...long live the owl.

There is a decent pattern for an 'Owl Slouch' on Ravelry that is very easy and quick to knit, and could be adapted to be a full on hat. I altered the pattern and added beads to my owls to make them stand out like in the sweater :o) I think its the same cabling idea, just in hat form - this site doesn't offer the best pics, but oh well: http://knitparty.wordpress.com/2007/09/12/owl-cable-slouch/
