Octopus Completed, For Reals

I decided against the green sequins I originally picked out.  Instead, Stanislav got some snazzy mini-stars suckers.  Let me tell you, it's a *pain* to put on the suckers after you've sewn on the legs.  My floss kept getting tangled in all his loopy legs.

I also should have known better than to play chess with him.  When I wasn't looking, the little sneak tried to make off with a pawn.  Naughty Stanislav.

Am I the only one that gets a kick out of naming things? Probably not.  Naming the octopus Stanislav makes me giggle every time I say/type it.  I also like to name inanimate possessions sometimes.  Someday I'll have to tell you guys about our awesome bedside lamps.

Last week, as a joke, Andrew asked me what the vacuum cleaner's name was.  Instantly, I said, "Mortimer Landsdown."  Since that time, he's become a much talked about member of our family.  When I got my coat out of the closet yesterday Mortimer fell over on me, and I had to tell him that he wasn't allowed to go on walks with us.  Poor Mortimer.

I'm always naming things too, and it's always super serious names like "anderson," or "vladamir." So glad I'm not the only one.

As long as Mortimer and Stanislav don't meet, because if they do, watch out! It'll be epic, and, potentially, tragic, or, maybe romantic? Hmmmm.

I love love love naming things! I just crocheted two monkeys and am trying to name them. I've name the boy Mason and the girl is still unnamed. I have to finish her tu-tu first. But I do enjoy alliteration, so one of my other favorites is Bernadette the Bird.

We name all sorts of things here as well. All the mannequins have names - I name stuff at work too.

Naming stuff not only gives them a personality, it also gives you someone to blame!

Example: the vacuum cleaner falls on you... "Mortimer, I know you want me, but I have to be honest... I think you suck."

It also means I get to serenade Fabian Ficus when I water him :D

xoxo

(It's a durned good thing that I'm comfortable in my own brand of crazy ;) )

Oh geeze! I love the photo of Stanislav taking out the chess piece! How fun! And my husband is the one that names things in our house. Usually it starts with "Mc" and there is a "stein" somewhere else. Like "McLoopystein". Or more offical titles like "McKra from the Republic of Kranstan."

Hi, I've been enjoying reading your blog which I stumbled upon a few months ago when I redoubled my efforts to learn to sew and crochet. Searching on those two topics led me to futuregirl.com, and after reading your words, I found myself "hooked." ;-)

My husband and I also name many of our inanimate posssessions... including a much beloved, full of attitude KitchenAid mixer named Hermione. Her sister (a KitchenAid food processor named Imogene) and she get into all kinds of trouble fighting over Slim, the toaster. Yes, our kitchen can be quite the scene sometimes!

Your blog inspires me every time I visit it... and one day, just maybe, I'll be so inclined to dip my own toe into the blogosphere pool.

Thank you so much for your wonderful blog! :-)

Let me just say that I've missed your blog in my own absence. I will be commenting on every post I've missed reading sometime this week.

I love your Octopus! And you definitely aren't the only one that names things. My macbook is Blanch. My treo is Ruby. They are definitely more than just electronics to me :) haha

Hi! He's adorable and his name is perfect. I love a good name - my little cat is "Godzilla" from the Blue Oyster Cult song (modified) "Oh no, Dad says he's got to go...". Ten years later and Zilla is still here.
Thanks also for posting my Octopus to the gallery! I'm honored!
Did anyone see the "hexapus" in the news? 6 legs? We need a stuffie! Mary, aka AlternaWidget

I ALWAYS name my teddy bears and dolls! Your Stanislav SOOO looks his name, and he is very cute with those arms! Maybe he is related to Mortimer? ;-)

I always name my diary books too, and when I was younger I loved to find places without a name, like the pound in our garden and name it. :-)

Stanislav is totally awesome, I love him.
My friend's cat, Fran, has a nervous condition where she excessively scratches her chin. Seriously, it's hairless. I now call her Sir Francis Twillingham of Scabbinshire. Her spy name is Francesca Perovski.

I *love* naming things. Sometimes, I think that's half the reason I make things--so I can name them.

My names aren't as awesome as yours though.

I just wanted to chime in on the "I LOVE NAMING" bandwagon. You can probably guess that I hate it when people give their pets made up names like "Cutie Pie". What an indignity to bear. Everything deserves to have a shot at a REAL name! A name says so much, after all. Even (http://www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html) statistical stuff related to names is interesting.

Perhaps my weirdest named thing of all: at my grocery store there is one of those coin operated games where a big glass container is filled with stuffed animals and you're supposed to fish them out with a claw, only it's impossible, so most of them stay there forever. There is a large stuffed lemur on the left front, kind of mashed into the corner, which has been there since at least late 2003, which is when I first went to that store and noticed him there. I secretly named him Robert and I look forward to seeing him every time I buy food.

If someone buys him one day, I don't know what I'll do!

I think Stanislav is a right proper name for an octopus. I love unique names for fuzzy friends too. I have a frog puppet named Phileas and a jackrabbit puppet named Jehoshaphat (as in jumping).

i love this. just found your blog on a boring night at work... thank you for the entertainment!

i originally named my (horribly) weird green 2001 hyundai accent "bella", due to the tinkerbell floormats that came with it and the tinkling bell sound when you don't have your seatbelt on. however, later i settled on "jellybean" as it's final name.

Oh gosh, my octopus stuffie is green too! Whoops! Didnt see ol' Stanislav and there was a limited selection of felt at our material store :( Mine'll be named Bonsai (cos he's small and green :P)...

Alas, Bonsai is still lying in pieces on my lounge floor (to the annoyance of the bf) unfinished, because try as I might I cannot find how to end off a sucker sequin and bead :( I'm even trying to Google it! Sigh. And its probably something really simple too!
