A Rainbow Blanket And A Dash Of Nostalgia

Imagine me at 12 ...

I had my mom paint a huge rainbow coming out of a big fluffy cloud on the wall at the head of my bed. I spent my summer sitting on the front porch with my wood burning set. My favorite song was Come On Eileen so I taped it off the radio onto a cassette tape. I collected interesting rocks from the driveway and gave them names like "Aristotle."  I liked to sit on the floor of the library and surround myself with piles of out-dated home decorating books from the 60s and 70s.

This is the blanket 12-year-old me would have wanted, which is why I'm making it for Vivi's Tricot du coeur charity blanket project.  The pattern is from 220 More Crochet Stitches page 25, stitch I.39.  I'm getting ready to add the border.  The yarn is Red Heart, because it's the only brand at the store that came in every color of "happy."

She is accepting crochet, knit, and quilted blankets.  They need to be postmarked on or before March 30, which gives you plenty of time to make the blanket the 12-year-old-you would have loved.

Oh boy. The 30-something me would love that, too. I've been contemplating rainbow shoelaces for a while. I love it!

I started reading this post but completely missed the first sentence. So I started it thinking, "Huh? Alice had her mom come paint a rainbow?". Yeah figured it out with the next sentence.

I couldn't remember Come On Eileen off the top of my head so I looked it up on YouTube. Wow I know the 12 year old me could never have imagined the world we live in now where that would even be possible.

I remember the song even though I don't have any specific memories associated with it. But I am having fun listening to it again. As I'm typing this, it's playing for the second time now as I watch Isabelle dance around. Hee hee hee! :)

Wow that sounds like me when I was 12! I love your blog. I went shopping today and I found those wonderful sequins that you are running out of...Actually I found them in 2 different sizes on clearance! I chuckled to myself when I found them and thought of you... I got them at Michaels for $1.5 for .45 oz bag ea.. They are made by Westrim Crafts. I live in Canada though, check out your local Micheals and Joannes, they will probably have them.. But if they dont shoot me your address and I will mail some to you. Wow i ramble! Keep up your awesome work and blog, I look forward to seeing it everyday.

Ack! crystalgourdine your blogger profile is hidden. I don't know who you are. :(

I *do* know you are very sweet and supremely thoughtful, though.

I love it. I guess I'm twelve. So young to be a mother. I sure feel like I'm almost 40, though.

12 yr old me would have loved that (and so would 33 yr old me!). I wish I could crochet or knit....maybe one day

Come on Eileen - now there's a blast from the past!

I would have totally loved this at 12 too! Well, I totally love it now... I guess I haven't grown up more in the past 12 years!

It's SUPER cute! Makes me wish I could learn to crochet.

OK, I am admittedly still 12 and I love that blanket. It rocks, but what's even "Rockier" is that you're making it for charity!

Keep up the amazing work!

Every color of happy is right - that is one beautifully, happy blanket. Especially with the back-story! Taping off the radio, how I remember our ancient technology.

That is a beautiful blanket. I just had my first lesson in crochet last night. I'm afraid I'm a long way off from making anything, but, I would love to someday create a colorful blanket like that.
