Crafting A Business

The publisher sent me a review copy of Crafting a Business: Make Money Doing What You Love (from Country Living).  I sort of expected a over-the-top optimistic view of doing what you love for a living with more optimism than reality.  While the book *is* chock-full of enthusiasm and encouragement, it also has a lot of realistic advice, like writing out a business plan that includes three years of projected financial statements and making sure you have the proper business insurance.

The stories of the women who have found success doing what they love are very inspiring.  There are stories of hard work, lucky breaks, courage in the face of adversity.  It's interesting to see how each woman approached her business and what advice they have for others.  I'll be honest, I started to get a little green around the edges, but I did enjoy reading their stories.

I've took a one-day small business course at the SBA (small business association) a million years ago, and the book included all of the information I learned there, plus more.  It's level-headed and straight forward.  If you want to turn your hobby into an actual business, this is a great place to start.  Using the information provided in the "Business-Crafting Workshop" section, you'll be able to determine your chance for success.

I wish they had included a chapter telling me where I could sell my handbags for $300 each so I could crochet for a living. ;)

Thanks for the book review! I'll have to add this to my "will read after baby gets to sleep" pile which is steadily growing.

I'm probably butchering her name but is that Eliza Strauser on the cover with her cake creation?

$300 each huh? How about the Hamptons? Some people need help spending! :)

No seriously, I met a woman who spent $350 on a knit hat. Can you believe that?? Well it was a 'designer' label.

Now to get that book translated to English English.

I'm "working" on doing just what that book discusses, but it seems that all of the sources for such a thing are Ameri-centric (which is fine, in and of itself, but of little use to me when it comes to tax rules and that sort of thing).

But I plod on (using a tonne of online government resources :) ).

Thanks for sharing!

xoxo

I live outside of Boston and there are definitely places around here where women pay ridiculous amounts of cash for handbags and whatnot. You just need to go to some little shop where they sell such things, in a neighborhood where people just have wayyy too much money!

Oh, and thanks so much for the book tip, it sounds really useful.

Psst - if you find that $300 a bag place could you ask if they are interested in dollies?

I saw the book in Country Living for 19.95 on-line it was 27-29.95 @ Amazon, after reading your review I'll definitely get it. Thanks. As far as finding that pricey little shop, where you can sell something for $300, it's not that easy. You have to find out whether they will buy it up front or take it on consignment. Right now I sell my stuff in shops that take 30-40%,.. that takes a big chunk out of $300. After time and materials they make more than me. Hopefully, the book will have a chapter on how to make a profit. Thanks again
