Sick

I am sick beyond belief.  There were hints of it Tuesday night, but my days-long fever hit me like a ton of bricks ONE HOUR before we were going to leave to see the Walkmen Wednesday night.  They are one of my top ten band-loves.  I've wanted to see them for almost 5 years, but every time they come we are out of town or something.  Well, this time I was sobbing quietly in bed trying to get to sleep despite my body aches and sore throat.

I just got back from the doctor, where I discovered they now have a rapid test for strep.  I got a little teary-eyed during the exam because, apparently, I'm a big cry baby when I've been getting no sleep and breathing *hurts.*  The sweet young woman doctor comforted me by saying, "Well, look at it this way, the worst it could be is a virus."

Say *hello* to the-worst-it-could-be. Well, that's not entirely true.  Without the rapid test for strep I'd probably be taking unnecessary antibiotics right now because the white spots all over my throat had her convinced it was strep.  Basically, all I can do is wait for it to go away.

I didn't get my illness-related craft mania like last time, although I've been able to muster the energy to comment on a couple of blogs (not as many as I would have liked to).  I also have a ton of email to answer. So, if you emailed in the last couple of days, I'll get back to you as soon as I feel better.

The only bright spot is that we *just* discovered NetFlix instant play.  By hooking a computer up to the TV, I can watch any of their available movies/shows on the TV while I'm snuggled into a big blanket on the couch.  Episodes of Miami Vice have been working really well to keep my mind off the pain.

Take care Alice! Get well soon.
Maybe that song they sang at Elaines office "get well get well soon" (Seinfeldt) can cheer you up..

I've been reading the blog for a while (and loving it!) but I don't think I've commented before.

I know just how you feel! I just got over one of the worst cold/flu bugs that I've had in years. A sore throat is one of the few things that reduces me to little girl tears and that was exactly what I had the first few days. Have a big bowl of cyber-chicken soup from me and get well soon!

I'm so sorry you're not feeling well and that you missed the Walkmen. I could just cry for you, I'm in one of those moods today. Rest up and hope you feel better soon.

well, if you had what i had then you can look forward to a horrid case of laryngitis and it hanging on for far longer than what you would expect... hoping you DONT have what i had. the only thing that worked to make it better was time, isn't that just a huge disappointment?
take care of yourself.

You have my sympathies! Stay curled up in front of Netflix. I really love that feature!

(On a side note, I got really sick when I lived in Russia with similar symptoms and I finally went to a Russian doctor and his Rx was drink hot tea with lemon followed by a shot of vodka! I swear its true!)

So sorry. I know it's hard, but just try to enjoy the rest. Sometimes our bodies just need rest more than anything, and chicken soup, and lots of hot tea....
Hope you feel better soon!

Aw, I hope you feel better! Maybe you can use this time to note down some crafty ideas even if you can't execute them at the time. :)

oh take care alice. i know how bad a spotty white throat could be. even swallow hurt so much! i used to gurgle a half cup of salty warm water few times a day. it helps a lot for speedy recovery.

Don't feel the need to reply to this comment, I'm certainly not trying to give you more work to do. Just sleep as much as you can, let your brain go numb with the boob tube and feel better soon. So sorry you missed your band. Take good care of yourself.

Get better soon - nothing worse than being sick AND an ailing crafting mojo to boot. Rest and plenty of liquids. I've been hooked on watching episodes of The Office on the old Instant View.

You poor thing! I hope you get all the rest and pampering you need to get back on your feet soon. We just started watching the "watch now" movies on Netflix too. "Chalk" was great and I'm only part way through "Helvetica" but you might like that too. Take care, hugs, Cassi

ouch.
last I knew, rapid strep tests didn't catch 100% of strep cases. It's rare but possible that you could have strep and the rapid test would be negative-- especially if you were tested very soon after your symptoms began. maybe tests have come farther since I was schooled in this, though.

basically, if you still feel awful and have white spots after a few days, maybe you should get tested again? strep can get really bad if it's not treated.

Lurker here, but I just want to agree with the poster that warned that the rapid tests are not 100% reliable. In fact, my husband has had strep three times in the past four winters and not ONCE did the rapid test show strep. But each time he got a call in saying to pick up ABs as the culture grew strep.

Hope you feel better. Love dropping by your blog.

Our pediatrician said 10 percent error rate on the quick test. His office sends them in to do the slower culture (also) to be sure. Just be sure to call the doc back if you don't feel better in a couple of days. Hope you feel better before that.

I'm so sorry you're sick! I'm a big cry-baby too when I get sick. I roll into a ball and cry until I pass out. It works better than nyquil.

I hope you feel better soon.

Don't hesitate to get another Strep screen if that sore throat pain gets worse.
Lemon and honey? Old fashioned but feels good on the throat.
