Wholesale Order Finished

I'm so happy that my first wholesale experience is with someone as nice as Angelina.  She has been super-enthusiastic the whole time.  She's made the process so pleasant that I'm totally not worried about it at all (should I be?  I hope not).

She and her husband run Dustpan Alley in Oregon and they have an online store full of all sorts of great things - from handmade aprons to the Ahava bath and body line.  Angelina also has a blog that I look forward to reading daily.

Angelina picked the styles for her order.  I think the ecru, brown, and teal handbags are going to look great arranged together.  These pictures are some of my favorite details from each of the styles.  My pictures really don't do them justice.  I'm super proud of how they came out ... but I'm really dying to know what other people think of them.  I wish I could tuck myself into the pocket of one of the bags so I could hear people's comments.  I think I could learn a lot from interacting with shoppers.  Which has me thinking ...

Craft Show

Art Star Bazaar is coming up June 2nd.  Last year I forgot about it and missed it (ack!).  This year I'm definitely going to check it out.  But, I want to start planning *now* to attend as a vendor next year (if they'll have me).

As a (sometimes) socially-awkward hermit, the whole idea is intimidating, but I really want to see people interacting with my creations in person.

That means I have a lot of work ahead of me. Let's say  I get about 10 hours of crafting time a week.  That means I have 520 hours of craft time between now and next year's show.  That's -- 65 days OR 13 weeks OR just over three months -- to prepare.  I think I can do it.  Well, I'm going to try.

the little bits you have shown look very great. i love that you have detailed exactly how long you have to work on the goods until summer 2008 - but then, of course you would.

Congrats on the wholesale order. Love the pictures--the colors & the sequins. And thanks for introducing Dustpan Alley--I always love new places to shop.

I love the craft show experience. It is intimidating to stand out there with your creations but at the same time it is so great when someone come along who really seems to "get it". Then, on the really good days where art and commerce stars align.. it is fun to walk out with some cash and some traded crafts.

Congrats on finishing your order. I expect Angelina will be thrilled with every stitch!

Congratulations on that wholesale order! Those gorgeous bags will fly out of the store, you watch. And your breakdown of available crafting hours cracks me up, but only because it's something I would do.

Any craft fair that wouldn't want you wouldn't be worth working with. There is a lot of crap out there, I think you'll find a lot of people will respond really well to your bags because they will be so ready to see some genuine creativity, originality, and fantastic craftsmanship combined.

I did a couple of craft fairs and I have that whole awkward bit too, mostly because I tend to cut to the chase. Which makes for startling small talk. Most people attending are really friendly and just looking for great crafts. But there's no denying that there's a certain number of people at craft fairs who are convinced that if it's hand made it should be CHEAPER than what they can buy in a store.

You just shrug them off.

Thanks for the mention (again) of my store and blog!

Alice -

The bags look great. AND I keep meaning to drop you a line that McMinnville, Oregon is where I went to college and where my mother grew up and where my grandfather built his own brick house out of that crazy multi-colored brick.

If you still have some of that birdcage action in you, we should talk swap sometime, cause they really are awesome.

And I agree that you should definitely aim for the craft fair. AND I would recommend planning on making at least one item in multiples that's small and quick for you to make that would be affordable at the lower end of the scale. I know the embellishments and assembly and level of care to make things are what takes more time than whether it's a "big" item or a "small" item, but seems like something to ponder during those, what was it? 13 weeks?

Love your calculations, as always.
