Swap With Frizz

Back in December when we participated in the ornament swap, Frizz and I agreed to do a personal swap of our own.  She wanted a felt stuffie and I wanted a painting.  We took our own sweet time, but it was sure worth the wait.

I can't even tell you how much I love the painting she created for me.  How can you not love a Salty Pirate Fox?  Perhaps he curses as much as I do.  I *know* the little worm is an ill-mannered curr - just my kind of worm.  On the back of the painting, she inscribed a poem that tells the painting's story.

Every tiny brush stroke is perfect. Even the scales on the smallest mer-fox (bottom right of the bottom right image) are individually painted with what must have been a one bristle brush. The parrot and the jug are both a deep eggplant purple that almost glows against the rich greens.

The photo, which I borrowed from Frizz, is good, but it doesn't even begin to show you the subtle layers of paint that make up the sky and the sea, nor the confident outlines of the characters.  Frizz's unpretentious, innocent graphic style belies the technical expertise of her work.  She is amazingly talented.

I'm totally envious of her packaging genius, too.  Just look at this cute package. I'm so in love with the deer and owl stamp.  The pirate fox stamp is nestled in the hanging bundle.  Can you believe it?  She made me a rubber stamp to match my painting.

In return, Frizz received a squirrel hand sewn by me.  I sent him to her nameless.  She's dubbed him Super Squirrel Sancho - an awesome name for an awesome squirrel. :)  He's very similar to Werner.  I changed the tail* so that it's just the marabou.

There is always that danger when you do a swap that you will either over or under swap ... I've been on both ends.  This time I was definitely the under-swapper.  I don't feel like one tiny cute squirrel is a fair trade for such a great painting and a hand carved stamp.  I've promised to even things out. :)

* Poor Werner's tail weighed more than he did, so if you aren't careful, he tips right over.

Oh, I think the swap was pretty fair. I mean, come on, it's a squirrel! An awesome squirrel, too. Anyway, I especially love her deer and owl stamp. (I knitted a squirrel who was also tail-heavy...wouldn't it be cool if the occasional real squirrel was tail-heavy? heh.)

When I saw Frizz's post of the painting, I almost died from jealousy. The green that had tinged all my features has since gone, but I still think you're one lucky girl! However, so is Frizz!

I think the swap was fair. It's really hard to compare two totally different arts. Her painting is really amazing, but so it the squirrel stuffie!

A VERY fair swap!! I so in love with Sancho. He's hanging out on a pile of pinecones high on a shelf. Safe form slobbery dogs who would like nothing more than to carry him around in their mouth and gunk up his fabulous tail! My softie attempts don't hold a candle to Sancho's craftsmanship. AND I have a Octophrost too which knocked the socks off of me when I opened him up.
I was worried about the subject matter and first tried for a forrest theme but the pirate's took over...aaarrrrggggg!

The painting is great! And I think Werner has got a lot of personality, and he is beautifully made. You really know how to make stuffies :-)

The painting is awesome. *Nothing* beats a salty pirate fox. I think the parrot looking at him skeptically is my fave.

And the squirrel! The cuteness is off the charts on that one.

hi!
I don't think that that pirate swears more than me... lately I'm surprising myself with some words... I understand when one swaps something and gets stuffs that amaze us we feel that we did nothing special... happens to me either!

OH, I'm green over that painting :)
And your squirrel is faboo. He reminds me of that old cartoon "Secret Squirrel" Maybe you just need to send along a fedora and trenchcoat and maybe a little mole sidekick :)

I read your entire blog last night. You have such great crafts that you do! I don't know if you've gotten better at your hand-made labels or not, but I thought I'd share what I found works better for hand embroidery. I've found that wax paper actually works the best for me on my fine embroidery work. I use a fine-tipped sharpie to trace my image. You have to let the ink dry for at least an hour before you start, though, or some of it will bleed through onto your piece. When I'm done sewing, I wad up the paper and get it as creased as I can, and then it tears away beautifully and doesn't pull any stitches at all. Keep up the cool projects!
