Jolie Holland

We just happened to notice Jolie Holland was playing next door to where we were going to eat dinner Tuesday night.  On a whim we bought tickets to see her for the third time.

She is amazing.  Her new band really fleshes things out and makes her sound BIG.  It was nice that half the show she was by herself with just a guitar, though.

I don't think I've seen anyone who is more high maintenance on stage.  Mark Eitzel comes close, but not quite because at least he loosens up eventually.  Jolie seemed like she was about to start screaming any second or throw down her mike and leave.  About three times she said she was "freaking out" about something including the fact that it was a seated show.  Loosen up, baby! :)

I once saw Michelle Shocked burst into tears and run from the stage in the middle of a set at the Philly Folk Festival-- it doesn't get much more high maintenance than that.

was that at the tin angel? be nice--nobody had to do anything to "maintain" me. that was a super hard night jeez I had a new bass player we had never practiced before and I was having an allergic reaction to the black mold in the building and the sound on stage was horrific and the sound lady had made the openers cry and someone was sadistically photographing me during the whole set even after I asked them to stop. what do you do for a living? do people snap photos of you constantly while you're trying to do it? it would probably drive you crazy too. I felt so disrespected. anyway, sounds like you liked the show despite all, even if you're ragging on me.

(here is the email response I sent to Jolie ...)

Are you really Jolie Holland? I'm not sure how you could prove it to me ...

I'm so sorry that my post came off as me ragging on you. :) Maybe high maintenance is the wrong descriptor. From what you say, my take on your mood wasn't too far off, though. I'm not sure I'd be much different than you on stage, especially under those conditions. Some people deal with the bumps in life in a calm, happy way and some deal with them as fights to be fought. I'm a fighter and I'm guessing you are, too.

Personally, I'm also frustrated with the weird sound on the Tin Angel stage because it's been there for every show we've seen there for almost a year. I'm also surprised that you didn't mention the crazy whoo-hooer. He was driving me nuts. I think he was louder than the music.

And you're totally right, we loved the show. :) We've always loved your shows. And your albums. You are an amazing musician, singer, and lyricist. It's nice to hear you with a band. It adds a new dimension to your music. It was also great to hear a Daniel Lanois song in the set.

I was being light-hearted in my blog post ... but I should remember that it doesn't always come across that way when someone's reading it ... especially if you don't know me ... especially when it's about you (the person reading it). I should also remember that people Google themselves. ;)

Please don't take offense, I didn't mean any.

All the best,

Alice

Jolie Holland is amazing.

If you like her, listen to the rest of the Anti- artists on their sampler. It's great.
